## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Y Combinator Companies Scraper — every YC company by batch, industry, status and region

Get the public Y Combinator startup directory as a clean table: company name, one-liner, full description, website, batch, status, team size, industries, tags, regions, location, stage, whether it is hiring, and its YC page. Filter by batch (`W25`, `Summer 2024`), industry, status, region, team size, hiring, or a search text. Export to CSV, JSON, Excel or Google Sheets. It reads the directory through the same search service that the directory's own page uses, so it is fast and returns the whole list, more than 6,000 companies.

**Who uses this:** investors and analysts mapping startups, sales teams building lead lists of new companies, recruiters finding startups that are hiring, founders researching competitors, journalists and researchers, AI agents that need current startup data.

### What you get per company

| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| `id`, `name`, `slug`, `ycUrl` | The company and its page on the YC directory |
| `oneLiner`, `description` | The short line and the long description |
| `website` | The company's website |
| `batch`, `launchedAt` | The YC batch (for example `Winter 2025`) and the date the company was added |
| `status` | `Active`, `Inactive`, `Acquired` or `Public` |
| `teamSize` | Number of people the company reports |
| `industry`, `subIndustry`, `industries`, `tags` | Industry, its sub-industry, all industries and tags |
| `regions`, `location` | Regions the company belongs to, and its location |
| `stage` | Company stage, for example `Growth` |
| `isHiring`, `topCompany`, `nonprofit` | Flags from the directory |
| `logoUrl`, `scrapedAt` | Small logo, and when the row was collected |

### Price

**$0.01 per run + $2 per 1,000 companies.** That is two pay-per-event charges: `actor-start` ($0.01) once per run and `result` ($0.002) per company. No compute fees on top. The free Apify plan ($5 per month credit) covers about 2,400 companies a month at no cost. A run that the directory does not answer is not charged.

### How to use

1. Open the Input tab. Pick **Batches** (or leave empty for all), and any other filters: **Industries**, **Regions**, **Status**, **Hiring only**, **Team size**, or a **Search text**.
2. Set **Max companies**. This is also your cost cap.
3. Click Start. When it is done, open the Output tab and export the table as CSV, JSON or Excel, or send it to Google Sheets with Apify's Google Sheets integration.

Batches can be written short: `W24` is Winter 2024, `S23` is Summer 2023, `F25` is Fall 2025, `X25` is Spring 2025. If you type an industry, region or status that the directory does not have, the run stops at once and shows the valid names, so a typo never costs you anything.

```
The description is shortened in this example.
### Limits
- Only what the public YC directory shows. No contact e-mails, no founder details, no funding amounts. The directory does not list them.
- The directory search returns 1,000 results per search. The actor gets around this by reading one batch at a time, newest first, so a run of any size is complete.
- With several filters the order is: newest batch first, and within a batch the directory's own order.
- `teamSize` and `stage` are what the company reported to YC and can be out of date.
- If the directory changes how its page works, the run stops with a clear message and is not charged for the companies. Open an issue and it will be fixed.
### FAQ
**Can I get a list of every batch's new companies each season?** Yes. Run the actor with the newest batch, for example `S26`, or schedule it and compare `id` values between runs.
**Can I find companies that are hiring?** Yes. Turn on **Hiring only**.
**Where does the data come from?** From the public Y Combinator startup directory at ycombinator.com/companies. The actor uses the same search service that the page uses for every visitor.
**Can an AI agent use it?** Yes. It works through Apify's API and MCP server. Give it filters and a `maxResults` limit.
**Something is wrong. What now?** Open an issue on the Issues tab with the input you used. Field requests are welcome.
### Changelog
- **0.1** First release: filters by batch, industry, status, region, team size, hiring and text; complete lists of any size; pay per event.
