## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## YouTube Live Chat Scraper

**YouTube Live Chat Scraper** extracts chat messages from [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/live) live streams and chat replays of ended streams into clean, structured data you can download as JSON, CSV, Excel, or HTML. Paste a video, live stream, or channel URL and get every message with its author, timestamp, membership badge, and Super Chat amount in numbers and currency. No account, login, or API key required.

### Introduction

[YouTube Live](https://www.youtube.com/live) hosts millions of live streams, from gaming and VTubers to news, sports, and product launches. The live chat shows what the audience says in real time, who supports the creator with Super Chats and memberships, and how much they pay.

This YouTube Live Chat Scraper collects the same public chat you see in your browser, for streams that are live right now and for the chat replay of past streams, and turns it into a ready-to-use dataset. It works as a simple YouTube live chat API alternative: run it once, schedule it, or connect it to your own tools.

### What data can you extract from YouTube live chat?

- 💬 Message text with emojis, message type, and unique message ID
- 💰 Super Chat and Super Sticker amount as text, as a number, and as a currency code
- 🎁 Membership joins, membership milestones, gifted memberships, and gift counts
- 👤 Author name, channel ID, channel URL, and profile photo
- 🏅 Author badges: channel owner, moderator, verified, and member (with membership duration)
- 🕒 Exact message time and position in the video (seconds and as shown on YouTube)
- 📺 Video ID, video title, channel name, and channel ID
- 🔗 Direct link to the moment in the video where the message was sent

### Use Cases

- 📈 **Creator and audience research**: measure chat activity, top chatters, and what viewers talk about during a stream.
- 💸 **Super Chat analytics**: track donations, Super Stickers, and memberships per stream, per channel, and per currency.
- 🕵️ **Competitor monitoring**: follow how audiences react to other creators, brands, or product launches.
- 🛡️ **Moderation review**: export the full chat of a stream to review messages after the event.
- 🤖 **AI and automation**: feed chat data into sentiment analysis, highlight detection, dashboards, or AI workflows.

### How to scrape YouTube live chat step by step

1. Paste one or more YouTube video, live stream, or channel URLs into **Start URLs**.
2. Set **Maximum number of messages** to how many messages you want per URL, or 0 for the whole chat replay.
3. Optionally choose the **Chat type**, turn on **Only Super Chats and Super Stickers**, or change the **Live listening time**.
4. Click **Start** and wait for the run to finish.
5. Download your data in JSON, CSV, Excel, or HTML from the **Output** tab.

### Input

- **Start URLs**: YouTube URLs to scrape. Supported pages:
  - Video and live stream pages (`youtube.com/watch?v=...`, `youtu.be/...`, `youtube.com/live/...`): returns the live chat while the stream is live, or the chat replay after it ended.
  - Channel pages (`youtube.com/@channel` or `youtube.com/@channel/streams`): returns the chat of the channel's latest streams.
  - Channel live page (`youtube.com/@channel/live`): returns the chat of the stream that is live right now.
- **Maximum number of messages**: how many chat messages to collect for each start URL. For a channel URL, the limit is shared by all of its streams. Use 0 for no limit.
- **Chat type**: "All messages" returns every message, like the "Live chat" view on YouTube. "Top chat" returns YouTube's filtered view without likely spam.
- **Only Super Chats and Super Stickers**: return only paid messages with their amount and currency.
- **Live listening time (seconds)**: how long to collect new messages from a stream that is live right now. The run stops earlier when the stream ends or the message limit is reached.
- **Streams per channel**: how many of the latest streams to scrape for each channel URL.

### Input Examples

Scrape the chat replay of a stream:

```json
{
  "startUrls": [{ "url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7bMoyNWaEE" }],
  "maxResults": 5,
  "chatType": "all",
  "onlyPaidMessages": false,
  "liveDurationSecs": 60,
  "maxStreamsPerChannel": 3
}
```

Collect only Super Chats and Super Stickers from the latest streams of a channel:

```json
{
  "startUrls": [{ "url": "https://www.youtube.com/@usadapekora" }],
  "maxResults": 100,
  "onlyPaidMessages": true,
  "maxStreamsPerChannel": 3
}
```

### Output

Each chat message is saved as one item in the dataset. Here is an example of a Super Chat:

```json
{
  "url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqJb0qnueDo&t=238s",
  "messageId": "ChwKGkNJXzdzZG1YMzVjREZSSEN3Z1FkaEpNTFVn",
  "videoId": "jqJb0qnueDo",
  "videoTitle": "#1【初見】『無職転生 Ⅱ ~異世界行ったら本気だす~』2期 同時視聴【ホロライブ/兎田ぺこら】",
  "channelName": "Pekora Ch. 兎田ぺこら",
  "channelId": "UC1DCedRgGHBdm81E1llLhOQ",
  "chatSource": "replay",
  "type": "superChat",
  "message": null,
  "authorName": "@受付長兼警備長おと",
  "authorChannelId": "UCequ9KXWSlad-snZlo-MfuA",
  "authorChannelUrl": "https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCequ9KXWSlad-snZlo-MfuA",
  "authorPhoto": "https://yt4.ggpht.com/9L2ZnUO57XQqk0Pej5Or0HAUzQprKdduYdXV8C9wM6C48Sft7UfwSgZuPKpifuLJsTsdlRLsGfU=s64-c-k-c0x00ffffff-no-rj",
  "isOwner": false,
  "isModerator": false,
  "isVerified": false,
  "isMember": true,
  "membershipBadge": "Member (1 year)",
  "timestamp": "2026-10-29T12:04:37.508Z",
  "videoOffsetSeconds": 238,
  "videoOffsetText": "3:58",
  "amount": "¥100",
  "amountValue": 100,
  "currency": "JPY",
  "stickerName": null,
  "stickerImage": null,
  "eventText": null,
  "giftCount": null
}
```

The `type` field is one of `textMessage`, `superChat`, `superSticker`, `membership`, `membershipGift`, or `giftRedemption`. `chatSource` tells you whether the message came from a live stream (`live`) or a chat replay (`replay`).

You can download the dataset in JSON, CSV, Excel, XML, or HTML, or access it through the Apify API.

### Notes

- Only public streams with chat turned on are supported. When the creator turned off chat or the chat replay, the stream is skipped with a warning.
- Members-only streams and scheduled streams that have not started yet are skipped.
- For a live stream, only messages sent while the actor is listening are collected (plus the few recent messages YouTube shows when you open the chat). Set **Live listening time** to how long you want to record.
- Super Chats can be sent without text, so `message` may be `null` for paid messages. `videoOffsetSeconds` and `videoOffsetText` are only available for chat replays.
- Amounts keep the format shown by YouTube (for example `¥5,000` or `IDR 10,000`). `currency` is `null` when the symbol is ambiguous.
- Channel URLs use the streams listed on the channel's "Live" tab (up to 30 latest streams).

### Why use the YouTube Live Chat Scraper?

- ✅ **No login or API key**: works with public chat only, so there is no account or quota to manage.
- 🔴 **Live and replay in one tool**: record a stream while it is live, or export the full chat of a stream that already ended.
- 💰 **Ready-to-use Super Chat data**: amounts come as numbers with a currency code, ready for totals and charts.
- ⚡ **Fast and light**: thousands of replay messages per minute, with no proxy needed.
- 💸 **Pay for what you need**: set a message limit per URL and keep every run small and cheap.
- 🔄 **Ready for automation**: schedule runs, export to Google Sheets, or connect to Make, Zapier, and n8n.

### FAQ

#### How many messages can I scrape?

Set any number in **Maximum number of messages**, or 0 to export the whole chat replay. Long streams can have tens of thousands of messages.

#### Do I need a YouTube account?

No. The actor only collects publicly available chat messages. You do not need to log in or provide an API key.

#### Can I record a live stream for a long time?

Yes. Increase **Live listening time** (up to 6 hours) and keep **Maximum number of messages** at 0 or a high number. The run stops when the stream ends.

#### Can I scrape YouTube live chat on a schedule?

Yes. Use Apify Schedules to run the actor every hour, day, or week, for example to collect the chat of a channel's latest streams.

#### Can I request a new feature or filter?

Yes. Right now the actor supports video, live stream, and channel URLs with the options above. If you need other inputs, such as search by keyword or more message types, get in touch and they can be added.

#### Can I get a custom or private version?

Yes. The actor can be customized for your workflow, delivered as a private version, or a new scraper can be built for a different website. Use the contact details below.
