# OpenAlex DeepTech & AI Corporate R\&D Talent & Lab Finder (`afkdigital/newapi26-openalex-deeptech-rd-finder`) Actor

Find publication-linked authors and research institutions from OpenAlex. One evidence-backed author–work–institution match per result; $0.005 each. Affiliations apply to the cited publication, not present employment.

## Pricing

$5.00 / 1,000 unique author–work–institution matches

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## OpenAlex DeepTech & AI Corporate R\&D Talent & Lab Finder

Find publication-linked R\&D authors and institutions from the official OpenAlex API. Each dataset item is **one unique OpenAlex author ID + work ID + institution ID** from an authorship on that specific publication. An affiliation is evidence for that publication, **not evidence of present employment**, a sales contact, or a verified corporate staff role.

### Inputs and limits

| Input | Default | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `topic` | quantum computing | OpenAlex full-text work search |
| `publicationDateFrom` / `publicationDateTo` | 2025-01-01 / today | Inclusive publication date range |
| `countryCode` | US | Country of the same authorship's institution; blank for any |
| `institutionType` | company | OpenAlex institution type; blank for any |
| `minCitations` | 0 | Minimum work `cited_by_count` |
| `maxResults` | 5 | Maximum unique author–work–institution rows |
| `maxCostUsd` | $0.025 | Maximum result event charge |
| `maxOpenAlexCostUsd` | $0.01 | Maximum measured API request usage |
| `maxApiRequests` | 30 | Request count ceiling |
| `openAlexApiKey` | empty | Optional verified free key; can also set `OPENALEX_API_KEY` securely |

With no key, the Actor scans at most the first 25 matching works in one page. A verified free key enables bounded page pagination. Do not put API keys into code, logs, or public input examples. No prepaid OpenAlex usage is purchased by this Actor.

### Output

The default Apify Dataset is JSON and can be downloaded as CSV from its standard `/items?format=csv` endpoint, or sent to Clay or n8n. Fields: `author_name`, `orcid` (nullable), `affiliated_institution_or_company`, `institution_id`, `country_code`, `work_title`, `publication_date`, `cited_by_count`, `topics_keywords` (array in JSON; serialized in CSV), `doi_url` (nullable), `source_url`, `observed_at`, plus `author_id` and `work_id` for deduplication. Institution type and country are rechecked against the OpenAlex `/institutions/{id}` record; ORCID is supplemented from `/authors/{id}`. The relationship itself always comes from `/works` `authorships`.

### Pricing and API costs

**$0.005 per unique author–publication–institution match**, or **$5 for 1,000 items**. One row in the default dataset is one `apify-default-dataset-item` pay-per-event charge; no extra custom event is charged. `maxCostUsd` limits that event total, and Apify's run charge ceiling is respected. The OpenAlex API is a separate resource cost; the run summary measures its `meta.cost` per call. A search is currently $0.001 per request, singleton lookups are free, and keyless usage has a shared $0.10/day budget. A free verified key grants $1/day. Users do not need to buy a paid OpenAlex plan for the small default. Apify platform usage is measured separately in cloud run reports; Store pricing may include it according to the pricing configuration. No purchase is automated.

### Caveats

OpenAlex authorship affiliation matching and author disambiguation can be imperfect; a person can list several institutions on one work. A missing ORCID stays null. Works returned in a list may truncate authorships after 100; this Actor fetches the singleton to inspect the full byline when needed. Query filters identify candidate works, but the Actor checks country and type on each author's own institution. Research topics are metadata, not claims about commercial offerings.

Data: [OpenAlex](https://openalex.org), accessed through its official API. Use the source URL and OpenAlex IDs to audit each row.
