# Federal Award Intelligence — Who's Winning, USASpending.gov (`alaudinburki/federal-award-intel`) Actor

Who's already winning federal contracts in your NAICS code, and how much — from USASpending.gov's free, keyless official data. The complement to the Grant/RFP Opportunity Radar: that shows what's open to bid, this shows who's already won.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Federal Award Intelligence — Who's Winning, USASpending.gov

The Grant/RFP Opportunity Radar (#68) answers "what's open to bid." This
answers the question a bidder actually needs before writing a proposal:
**who is already winning in my NAICS code, and how much?**

USASpending.gov is the official federal spending transparency database —
every contract award, obligation, and modification. Unlike SAM.gov, it's
**entirely free and keyless** — no registration, no daily quota.

### The product is the ranking, not the rows

Raw award data is a chore to read one row at a time. The default output
mode aggregates every award by recipient into a **who's-winning table** —
total dollars, award count, and which agencies each company works with.
That's the actual competitive-intelligence question a GovCon bidder is
asking.

### Input

```json
{ "searches": [{ "naicsCode": "541512" }], "outputMode": "competitors" }
```

### Sample output (`competitors` mode — the default)

```json
{
  "recipient": "BOOZ ALLEN HAMILTON INC",
  "totalAmount": 3748504712.97,
  "awardCount": 4,
  "agencies": "Department of Veterans Affairs"
}
```

Switch to `outputMode: "awards"` for individual award rows instead of the
aggregated ranking.

### Typical uses

- **Competitive intelligence before bidding** — see who's actually winning
  in your NAICS code before writing a proposal against them.
- **Teaming-partner research** — identify companies with a strong track
  record in a specific agency to approach as a subcontractor or prime.
- **Market sizing** — total dollars awarded in a NAICS code over a period
  gives a real market-size estimate, not a guess.

### Pricing

**$3.00 / 1,000 results** (`$0.003` per row — competitor ranking row or
individual award row, depending on `outputMode`).

### ⚠️ Read before you act

- **`daysBack` filters by recent activity, not original award date.**
  USASpending's time-period filter includes contract *modifications* — a
  decades-old base contract (a large IDIQ, for example) can still appear if
  it was modified recently. This is correct behavior for tracking who's
  currently active, not a bug.
- **NAICS filtering reflects USASpending's own classification**, which can
  occasionally differ from how a company itself describes its work.
- **This is historical/awarded data**, not open opportunities — pair with
  the Grant/RFP Opportunity Radar (#68) for what's still open to bid.

### FAQ

- **Do I need an API key?** No — USASpending.gov's API is completely free
  and keyless, unlike SAM.gov.
- **How far back can I search?** Up to 5 years (`daysBack` up to 1825).
- **Can I search by agency instead of NAICS?** Yes — add `agency` to a
  search entry to filter by awarding agency.

# Actor input Schema

## `searches` (type: `array`):

One or more searches, each with a NAICS code and/or keyword, plus optional agency. Example: \[{"naicsCode": "541512"}]

## `outputMode` (type: `string`):

'competitors' aggregates awards by recipient into a ranked who's-winning table (the main product). 'awards' returns individual award rows instead.

## `daysBack` (type: `integer`):

How many days of award activity to search, up to 5 years. Filters by recent activity (including contract modifications), not just original award date.

## `maxAwardsPerSearch` (type: `integer`):

How many USASpending results to pull per search.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "searches": [
    {
      "naicsCode": "541512"
    }
  ],
  "outputMode": "competitors",
  "daysBack": 365,
  "maxAwardsPerSearch": 100
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

Ranked recipients (default) or individual award rows, depending on outputMode.

## `qualityReport` (type: `string`):

Searches run, awards found per search, and problems.

// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("alaudinburki/federal-award-intel").call(input);

// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
