# Funded-Lab Sales Radar — Who's Funded to Work on X (`alaudinburki/funded-lab-radar`) Actor

Turns NIH's free grant database into a ranked lead list: which labs, PIs, and institutions are funded to work on your topic, with award size and funding freshness. Built for lab-equipment sales, CRO business development, and academic recruiting — the list vendors currently build by hand.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

## Funded-Lab Sales Radar — Who's Funded to Work on X

NIH hands out roughly 60,000 grants a year — each one a public record of a
named principal investigator, at a named institution, with a specific
budget, working on a specific topic **right now**. Lab-equipment vendors,
CRO business development teams, and academic recruiters build this list by
hand today, from journal articles and conference badges.

NIH RePORTER already has all of it — structured, free, no key, no login.
This turns "who's funded to work on X" from a research chore into a ranked,
contactable lead list.

### How it works

Searches NIH's own [RePORTER v2 API](https://api.reporter.nih.gov/) by
topic across project titles, terms, and abstracts, then ranks results by
**funding tier** (award size) and **funding freshness** (how much runway is
left) — a sales-relevant signal, not a research one. A well-funded grant
that just started has years of unspent budget; that's the lead worth
prioritizing.

### Input

```json
{ "topics": ["CRISPR screening"], "fiscalYears": "2025", "activeOnly": true }
```

### Sample output

```json
{
  "matchedTopic": "CRISPR screening",
  "projectNumber": "5P30DK020579-48",
  "piName": "Jane Q. Researcher",
  "institution": "WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY",
  "institutionState": "MO",
  "awardAmount": 473761,
  "fundingTier": "substantial",
  "fundingFreshness": "just_started",
  "fiscalYear": 2025,
  "reporterUrl": "https://reporter.nih.gov/search/results?projectNum=5P30DK020579-48"
}
```

### Typical uses

- **Lab-equipment sales prospecting** — find labs funded to buy the kind of
  instrument you sell, before your competitor's rep does.
- **CRO business development** — surface newly-funded studies that will
  need contract research services.
- **Academic recruiting** — find well-funded labs actively hiring in a
  specific research area.

### Pricing

**$4.00 / 1,000 results** (`$0.004` per lead).

### ⚠️ Read before you act

- **Matching is NIH's own full-text search**, not a strict keyword filter —
  skim the abstract excerpt before reaching out. A topic match doesn't
  guarantee the project is your exact use case.
- **Funding tier and freshness are signals, not guarantees.** A "major"
  tier grant with years of runway is a strong lead; verify budget status
  directly before a high-stakes pitch.
- **Only NIH-funded research is covered.** NSF, DOE, and private foundation
  grants are out of scope for this actor.

### FAQ

- **Do I need an NIH account or API key?** No — the RePORTER API is
  completely free and keyless.
- **Can I search multiple topics at once?** Yes — each topic in the list
  runs as a separate search, results merged and deduplicated by project
  number.
- **What does `activeOnly` do?** Restricts results to grants with runway
  left. Turn it off to include closed-out historical grants too.

### Related actors

- **Grant/RFP Opportunity Radar** — the same "official public database as
  a lead list" pattern, for federal contract opportunities via SAM.gov.
- **SEC EDGAR Filings** — another official-data-as-signal actor, for
  material corporate events instead of research funding.

# Actor input Schema

## `topics` (type: `array`):

Topics to search for in NIH grant titles, terms, and abstracts, e.g. mass spectrometry, CRISPR screening. Each topic is a separate search.

## `fiscalYears` (type: `string`):

Space or comma separated NIH fiscal years to search, e.g. 2024, 2025. Leave empty for all years.

## `activeOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Only return grants that are currently active (have runway left, an unspent budget). Turn off to also include closed-out historical grants.

## `minAwardAmount` (type: `integer`):

Discard grants funded below this amount. Leave empty for no minimum.

## `maxResultsPerTopic` (type: `integer`):

How many NIH RePORTER results to pull per topic search.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Hard cap on items returned across all topics. You are never charged beyond this.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "topics": [
    "CRISPR screening"
  ],
  "activeOnly": true,
  "maxResultsPerTopic": 50,
  "maxItems": 500
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

Funded labs/PIs matching your topics, ranked by award size.

## `qualityReport` (type: `string`):

Topics searched, matches per topic, and problems.
