## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## GoodFirms Directory Scraper

Scrape B2B company profiles from GoodFirms directory. Extract company info, reviews, ratings, services, and portfolios. Find IT companies, agencies, and software providers. Built by John Rippy (https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnrippy/ | https://johnrippy.link/).

Note: this actor runs in Demo Mode by default, so a default free run returns sample data. Set demoMode to false to fetch real data.

***

### Quick Start

#### Test with Demo Mode (free, no API key needed)

```json
{
  "demoMode": true,
  "searchQuery": "software development company"
}
```

#### Run with real data

```json
{
  "demoMode": false,
  "searchQuery": "software development company",
  "maxResults": 50
}
```

***

### Input Parameters

| Parameter | Type | Default | Required | Description |
|-----------|------|---------|----------|-------------|
| `demoMode` | boolean | `true` | No | Run with sample data without making API calls. Great for testing the actor. |
| `searchQuery` | string | - | No | Search term (e.g., 'software development', 'web design', 'mobile app'). |
| `category` | string | - | No | Filter by company category. |
| `location` | string | - | No | Filter by location (e.g., 'USA', 'India', 'UK'). |
| `maxResults` | integer | `50` | No | Maximum number of companies to scrape. |
| `webhookUrl` | string | - | No | URL to POST results when scraping completes (Zapier, Make, n8n, custom endpoint) |

***

### Pricing

This actor uses **pay-per-event** billing:

| Event | Description | Price |
|-------|-------------|-------|
| Company Scraped | Each GoodFirms company profile scraped | $0.08 |

**Demo mode is free** -- no charges for sample data.

***

### Troubleshooting

#### "API error 429" or "Rate limit"

Too many requests. Wait a minute and try again, or reduce the number of items per run.

#### No results or empty dataset

Check the run log for error messages. Common causes:

- Invalid input format (check the examples above)
- The target data doesn't exist or is too small to track

#### How do I test without an API key?

Enable **Demo Mode** in the input. This returns realistic sample data so you can verify the output format works for your workflow.
