# Website Technology Detector (`autoloom/website-technology-detector`) Actor

Find out what a website is built with — CMS, ecommerce, analytics, JS frameworks, CDN, fonts, support and marketing tools — with a confidence score and the evidence for each. Samples a few internal pages, not just the homepage.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Website Technology & Tech Stack Detector

**Website Technology Detector** is a tech stack lookup for lists of websites. It finds out what each site is built with (CMS, ecommerce platform, analytics, JavaScript framework, CDN and hosting, fonts, support chat, marketing and payment tools) and gives a **confidence score and the evidence** for every technology. It samples a few internal pages, not just the homepage, and uses plain HTTP, so big lists stay fast and cheap. A lightweight BuiltWith or Wappalyzer alternative for lead lists and competitor research.

> **Pricing:** pay per result: $1.50 per 1,000 results ($0.15 per 100, $15.00 per 10,000), plus $0.00005 per run start. One result = one website checked.

### What data you get (one row per website)

| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| `site`, `statusCode` | The website and its homepage HTTP status |
| `technologies` | List of `{ technology, category, confidence, evidence }`, highest confidence first |
| `technologyCount` | How many technologies were found |
| `byCategory` | The same list grouped by category, easy to read in a spreadsheet |

### What it detects (47 technologies)

| Category | Technologies |
|---|---|
| CMS | WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Ghost |
| Ecommerce | Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce |
| Website builder | Wix, Squarespace, Webflow |
| JS framework | React, Next.js, Vue.js, Nuxt, Angular, Svelte, Gatsby |
| JS library / UI | jQuery, Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS |
| Analytics | Google Analytics 4, Google Analytics (UA), Meta Pixel, Hotjar, Mixpanel, Segment, Matomo, Plausible, Fathom |
| Tag manager | Google Tag Manager |
| Marketing | HubSpot, Klaviyo, Mailchimp |
| Support | Intercom, Zendesk, Drift |
| Payment | Stripe, PayPal |
| CDN / hosting | Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront, Fastly, Netlify, Vercel |
| Web server | Nginx, Apache |
| Fonts | Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts (Typekit), Font Awesome |

Each match records the **evidence** it was based on (for example a script path, a response header or a generator tag), so you can check any result yourself.

### How to use it

1. Paste your websites into **Websites**.
2. Leave **Sample internal pages** on to also read two internal pages per site (catches tools that only load on some pages).
3. Optionally set **Minimum confidence** (0–1) to hide weaker matches.
4. Click **Start**, then export to CSV or Excel, or read the results through the API.

### Input example

```json
{
  "startUrls": [
    { "url": "https://apify.com" },
    { "url": "https://example-store.com" }
  ],
  "samplePages": true,
  "minConfidence": 0
}
```

### Output example

A real row from a test run on `https://apify.com` (13 Oct 2026), shortened:

```json
{
  "site": "https://apify.com",
  "statusCode": 200,
  "technologies": [
    { "technology": "HubSpot", "category": "Marketing", "confidence": 0.99, "evidence": ["hubspot script"] },
    { "technology": "Next.js", "category": "JS framework", "confidence": 0.99, "evidence": ["_next path"] },
    { "technology": "Google Tag Manager", "category": "Tag manager", "confidence": 0.99, "evidence": ["gtm.js"] },
    { "technology": "Amazon CloudFront", "category": "CDN / Hosting", "confidence": 0.99, "evidence": ["cloudfront header"] }
  ],
  "technologyCount": 6,
  "byCategory": {
    "Marketing": ["HubSpot"],
    "JS framework": ["Next.js"],
    "Tag manager": ["Google Tag Manager"],
    "Support": ["Intercom"],
    "UI framework": ["Bootstrap"],
    "CDN / Hosting": ["Amazon CloudFront"]
  }
}
```

### Pricing

| Websites checked | Cost |
|---|---|
| 100 | $0.15 |
| 1,000 | $1.50 |
| 10,000 | $15.00 |

One result per website checked, plus $0.00005 per run start. Apify's free plan includes monthly platform credit you can use to try it, and free-plan users get the same features.

### Use it with the API, Make, Zapier or Google Sheets

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/autoloom~website-technology-detector/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_API_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"startUrls":[{"url":"https://apify.com"}],"samplePages":true}'
```

Send results to Google Sheets, Make, Zapier or n8n through Apify's integrations, or schedule a monthly run to spot when a competitor or lead changes platform.

### FAQ

**How is this different from BuiltWith or Wappalyzer?** It covers a focused set of 47 common technologies rather than thousands, has no subscription, and shows the evidence for each match. Use it when you need the main stack for a list of sites at a low per-site price.

**Does it render JavaScript?** No. It reads HTML and response headers. Most tools leave clear traces there (script paths, headers, generator tags), but a tool loaded only after user interaction may be missed.

**What does confidence mean?** How strong the evidence is, from 0 to 1. Several independent signals push it towards 0.99. Use **Minimum confidence** to filter.

**What about sites that block bots?** You still get a row with the status code, so you can see which sites could not be read.

**Is it legal?** It reads publicly available pages and headers, the same way a browser does. Respect each site's terms.

# Actor input Schema

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

The websites whose technology you want to detect.

## `samplePages` (type: `boolean`):

Also check a couple of internal pages, not just the homepage — catches tech that only loads on some pages.

## `minConfidence` (type: `number`):

Only report technologies at or above this confidence. Raise it to cut false positives.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "startUrls": [
    {
      "url": "https://apify.com"
    }
  ],
  "samplePages": true,
  "minConfidence": 0
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `dataset` (type: `string`):

One row per website with the detected technologies, their category, a confidence score and the evidence.

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.
