## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## IRS Nonprofit Finder — 501(c) Lists with Form 990 Financials

Build targeted nonprofit lists straight from the **official IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File (EO BMF)**. Filter by state, city, ZIP, NTEE cause area, 501(c) type, revenue band, and the year an org was recognized as exempt. You can also add each org's **latest Form 990 financials** (revenue, expenses, assets, officer pay, PDF link) from ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer.

No login. No scraping of private sites. Every record comes from public government data.

### Who it's for

- **Grant writers & fundraising consultants:** find mid-size 501(c)(3)s ($250k–$5M revenue) in your metro.
- **B2B SaaS / agencies selling to nonprofits:** donor CRMs, accounting, payroll, web design.
- **Bookkeepers & CPAs:** orgs crossing the 990-EZ/990 thresholds.
- **New-org monitoring:** set `rulingYearFrom` to this year and schedule weekly runs to catch newly recognized charities.
- **Researchers & journalists:** sector counts by NTEE code and geography.

### Example inputs

Nashville human-services charities over $250k, with 990 data:

```json
{"states":["TN"],"cities":["NASHVILLE"],"nteePrefixes":["P"],"subsections":["3"],"minRevenue":250000,"enrichWith990":true,"maxItems":200}
```

Every nonprofit in TN and KY ruled exempt since 2025:

```json
{"states":["TN","KY"],"rulingYearFrom":2025,"sortByRevenue":false}
```

### Output (one row per organization)

`ein, name, careOf, street, city, state, zip, subsection, nteeCode, nteeCategory, foundationType, deductible, rulingDate, taxPeriod, assets, income, revenue, irsDetailsUrl, propublicaUrl` plus, when enrichment is on: `latest990Year, latest990Revenue, latest990Expenses, latest990Assets, officerCompensation, latest990Pdf, filingsCount`.

You can export to CSV, Excel, JSON, or Google Sheets, or call it through the API, Make, Zapier, or n8n.

### How it differs from other nonprofit Actors

- Covers **all 50 states + DC + PR**. Pick one state or many in a single run.
- **Cause-area (NTEE) and revenue-band filters** that run server-side, so you pay only for the rows you want.
- Optional **990 enrichment** in the same run. No second tool needed.
- Human-readable foundation type and NTEE category labels.

### Data notes

The IRS updates the EO BMF monthly. Revenue and assets come from the most recent return on file. Small orgs (990-N filers) show blank or zero financials. Contact names, emails, and phones are **not** included; the IRS does not publish them.

### Pricing

Pay per result: **$2.00 per 1,000 organizations** ($0.002 each). Rows with 990 enrichment cost **$5.00 per 1,000**. Free-plan users get enough credit to try a city-sized list.
