## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

### What does Email to Company & Job Title Finder do?

**Email to Company** turns a list of email addresses into the place each person works now. Paste the gmail, outlook and yahoo addresses from your sign-up list and get back the current employer, job title, start date, full name and LinkedIn profile URL for every address we have on record. It is the **B2C to B2B enrichment** step: finding the business buyers inside a consumer list.

- Input is a plain list of emails, up to 1,000 per run. Personal mailboxes are the point; business addresses work too.
- Each answer is one narrow row: company, job title, name, profile link, location.
- You pay **$3.80 per 1,000 companies found** — below every other publisher's pay-per-match reverse email lookup on the Apify Store (they ask $4 to $30 per 1,000 matches; checked on 2026-10-01). A row is charged only when it names a current employer.
- Unmatched addresses, people with no current job, ambiguous matches and invalid entries are free rows, each with a status and a reason.
- Answers come from our own database of business-contact records. No cookies, no login, no browser.
- Run it from the Apify Console, on a schedule, through the API, or from an AI agent through the Apify MCP server.

### What data do you get from an email address?

| Field | Example | When it is filled |
|---|---|---|
| `company` | `Northwind Logistics` | every charged row |
| `jobTitle` | `Head of Operations` | nearly every charged row |
| `positionStartDate` | `2023-04-01` | when the profile dates the position |
| `companyLinkedinUrl` | `https://www.linkedin.com/company/northwind-logistics` | when the employer has a company page on record |
| `otherCurrentCompanies` | `["Riverside Food Bank"]` | when the person holds more than one current position |
| `seniority` | `director` | where available |
| `fullName` | `Dana Whitfield` | every matched row |
| `linkedinUrl` | `https://www.linkedin.com/in/dana-whitfield-example` | every matched row |
| `location`, `country` | `Austin, Texas, United States`, `US` | most matched rows |
| `industry` | `Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain and Storage` | most matched rows; it is the industry on the person's profile |
| `emailType` | `personal` or `business` | every row with a usable address |
| `matchedEmail` | `danawhitfield@gmail.com` | only when a second spelling of a Gmail address is the one on record |
| `_status` | `found` | every row |
| `_freshness` | `fresh_90d`, `updated_1y`, `older`, `unknown` | every `found` row |

`emailType` is `personal` when the address sits on a consumer mailbox provider (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud and similar) and `business` for everything else. `business` means "not a consumer mailbox". It does not mean the address belongs to the current employer: someone matched by an old work address comes back with the company they work at now.

The row does not carry the employer's website, headcount or funding. Pass the company to [Domain to Company](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/domain-to-company) or [Company Database Search](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/company-database-search) for those.

### How to convert emails to companies (3 steps)

1. Paste your email addresses into **Email addresses**, one per line.
2. Click **Start**.
3. Export the dataset as CSV, Excel or JSON, or read it through the API. Filter on `_status = found` to keep the rows that name an employer.

### How much does it cost to find a company from an email?

| Event | Price | When it is charged |
|---|---|---|
| `company-found` | $0.0038 per row ($3.80 per 1,000) | the address matched one person and that person has a current position at a named employer |

Everything else is free of result charges:

| `_status` | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `not_found` | no person on record for this address |
| `no_current_employer` | the person was matched, but the profile shows no current position at a named employer. The row names nobody |
| `ambiguous` | the address is on record for more than one profile, so the employer cannot be attributed to one person. The row says how many profiles share the address and names none of them |
| `profile_removed` | the profile on record for this address no longer exists |
| `invalid` | the entry is not an email address |
| `role_address` | a shared mailbox such as `info@` or `sales@`: it belongs to a function, not a person, and is not looked up |
| `error` | the lookup could not be completed for this entry; run it again |

Placeholders such as "Self-employed" or "Freelance" do not count as a named employer. The platform's small Actor start fee applies to every run.

On a list where 3 in 10 addresses return a company, 1,000 emails cost about $1.20.

### Input

```json
{
  "emails": [
    "dana.whitfield@gmail.com",
    "Sam Okafor <sam.okafor@outlook.com>",
    "mailto:lee@northwind-logistics.example"
  ]
}
```

The Actor cleans what people paste out of a CRM export or a mail client: `Name <address>`, `mailto:` links, brackets, capitals and trailing punctuation. A `+tag` is dropped on providers that treat it as an alias. Gmail addresses that differ only by dots, or by `googlemail.com`, count as one mailbox, and when the spelling you typed is not on record the Actor tries the second spelling once. Duplicates are looked up once and produce one row.

### Output

A found row (charged):

```json
{
  "_status": "found",
  "_input": { "email": "dana.whitfield@gmail.com" },
  "_freshness": "updated_1y",
  "email": "dana.whitfield@gmail.com",
  "emailType": "personal",
  "company": "Northwind Logistics",
  "companyLinkedinUrl": "https://www.linkedin.com/company/northwind-logistics",
  "jobTitle": "Head of Operations",
  "positionStartDate": "2023-04-01",
  "otherCurrentCompanies": ["Riverside Food Bank"],
  "fullName": "Dana Whitfield",
  "linkedinUrl": "https://www.linkedin.com/in/dana-whitfield-example",
  "location": "Austin, Texas, United States",
  "country": "US",
  "industry": "Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain and Storage"
}
```

A miss (free):

```json
{
  "_status": "not_found",
  "_input": { "email": "sam.okafor@outlook.com" },
  "_error": "No person on record for this address. Not charged.",
  "email": "sam.okafor@outlook.com",
  "emailType": "personal"
}
```

A matched person without a current employer (free):

```json
{
  "_status": "no_current_employer",
  "_input": { "email": "r.alvarez@yahoo.com" },
  "_error": "A person matches this address, but their profile shows no current position at a named employer. Not charged."
}
```

### Email to Company API, MCP and integrations

- **API:** start a run with the Apify API and read the dataset items when it finishes.
- **MCP:** add this Actor to the Apify MCP server and call it from Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client.
- **Automation:** the Apify integrations for Make, n8n and Zapier can start a run and pass the rows on to your CRM.

### Use cases

- **Product-led growth:** find the people on a free plan who work at companies worth a sales conversation.
- **RevOps:** add employer and title to consumer-address contacts before lead scoring and routing.
- **Marketing:** segment a newsletter or waitlist by company and role.
- **Recruiting:** see where the people on a candidate list work today.

### FAQ

#### How do I find where someone works from an email address?

Paste the address into the input and start the run. If the address is on record and the person has a current position, the row comes back with the company and job title.

#### What is the match rate for email to company?

On our test sample of 2026-09-30, about 35% of free-mailbox addresses resolved to a person (56 of 161). Of the people resolved by a personal address, about 86% had a current employer (48 of 56). So roughly 3 in 10 personal addresses return a company. The sample was addresses published by software developers; other audiences can land higher or lower, and you only pay for the rows that return a company.

#### Am I charged when nothing is found?

No. Only `found` rows are charged. `not_found`, `no_current_employer`, `ambiguous`, `profile_removed`, `invalid`, `role_address` and `error` rows carry no result charge.

#### What happens when one address belongs to several profiles?

The row comes back as `ambiguous`, free, with the number of profiles that share the address. In our tests every wrong-person answer to an email lookup was one of these shared addresses, so they are shown but never sold.

#### Which position is reported when a person has several?

The open position that carries the person's own headline title. If none does, the most recently started one. The rest are listed in `otherCurrentCompanies`.

#### Can I run email to company in bulk from a CSV?

This Actor takes up to 1,000 addresses per run as a list. Paste the email column from your CSV, or split a longer list across runs. For full-profile enrichment of a CSV with up to 50,000 rows, use [Bulk People Enrichment](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/bulk-people-enrichment).

#### Does it need cookies, login or an API key?

No. The Actor never logs in to any website. It reads from our own database of business-contact records.

#### How fresh is the data?

Each matched row carries `_freshness`: `fresh_90d`, `updated_1y` or `older`, from the date the profile record was last updated. A position counts as current when the profile shows it with no end date, so a person who changed jobs without updating their profile still shows the old employer. Check `_freshness` and `positionStartDate` before you rely on an older row.

#### What is the difference between Email to Company and Email to LinkedIn?

[Email to LinkedIn](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/email-to-linkedin) answers "who is this": it charges for every matched profile. Email to Company answers "where do they work": it charges only when the match names a current employer.

#### Is it legal to look up an employer by email?

That depends on where you and the people on your list are, and on what you do with the result. You need a lawful basis for processing the addresses you submit and for any outreach that follows. See the disclaimer below; it is not legal advice.

### Use Email to Company & Job Title Finder with AI agents and MCP

This Actor works as a tool for AI agents. Add it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any other MCP client through the Apify MCP server:

```
https://mcp.apify.com?tools=b2bsearch/email-to-company
```

- **Fast enough for a tool call.** A small request finishes in seconds, so the agent gets its answer inside one call.
- **The agent pays only for results.** Prices are per result (see the pricing section above) and every miss is a free row. Cap what one call may spend with `maxTotalChargeUsd`.
- **Rows explain themselves.** Each row has a `_status`; a row that is not a result says why in `_error`, so the agent can decide what to do next without guessing.

Input an agent can send as is:

```json
{
  "emails": [
    "satya.nadella@microsoft.com"
  ]
}
```

The same Actor is available as a tool in LangChain, CrewAI and the OpenAI Agents SDK, and as a step in n8n, Make and Zapier through the Apify integrations.
