## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

### What does Lookalike Company Finder do?

**Lookalike Company Finder** turns a company website domain into a list of **similar companies**: the same industry, the same country and a similar size as the seed, each delivered as a company card with name, domain, LinkedIn company page URL, industry, headcount, headquarters, founding year and last funding round.

Enter `linear.app` and get software companies in the United States with between half and twice its headcount. Enter a customer's domain and get its peers — the accounts most likely to buy what that customer bought.

It is a lookalike company search, similar companies finder and competitor finder by domain, built on a database of 115M company records: no cookies, no login, no browser, an answer in seconds per seed.

- One row per lookalike, each company once; the seed itself is never returned.
- **Every row says what it matched on** (`matchedOn: industry, country, size`): the criteria are explicit, not a score you cannot check. Turn "same country" or "similar size" off to widen the match, or name the countries you want lookalikes in.
- **You pay per company delivered** — $0.0015 each ($1.50 per 1,000). Seeds that resolve to nothing, seeds without an industry on record and duplicate records under a seed are free. Two similar seeds can list the same company twice: keep the seed list distinct.
- Up to 50 seeds and 500 lookalikes per seed per run, from the Console, the API, a schedule, an n8n / Make / Zapier step or an MCP client.

### What data do you get per lookalike?

| Field | Example | Filled |
|---|---|---|
| `seed`, `seedCompany`, `seedIndustry`, `seedEmployeeCount`, `seedCountry` | `linear.app`, `Linear`, `Software Development`, `270`, `US` | every row: the company this lookalike was found for |
| `matchedOn` | `industry, country, size` | every row |
| `companyName`, `domain`, `website` | `Example Corp`, `example.com`, `https://www.example.com` | every row (`website` when on record) |
| `linkedinUrl` | `https://www.linkedin.com/company/example-corp` | when the company page is on record |
| `industry` | `Software Development` | every row — the seed's industry |
| `employeeCount`, `employeeRange` | `180`, `51-200` | when a headcount is on record |
| `country`, `hqLocality`, `hqRegion` | `US`, `Austin, Texas`, `Texas` | country always; HQ when on record |
| `founded` | `2016` | when the founding year is on record |
| `description` | `Example Corp builds …` | when on record, trimmed to 300 characters |
| `hasFunding`, `lastRoundType`, `lastRoundDate`, `lastRoundAmountUsd` | `true`, `series_b`, `2024-05-14`, `40000000` | when a round is on record |
| `companyId` | `123456` | every row — stable id, usable in other Actors |
| `_status`, `_input`, `_note`, `_error` | `found` | every row |

### How to find similar companies from a domain (3 steps)

1. Paste seed domains into **Seed company domains**, one per line (up to 50). Full URLs are reduced to the domain.
2. Choose how many lookalikes per seed and whether they must share the seed's country and size band, then press **Start**.
3. Export the dataset as CSV, Excel or JSON, or read it through the API. To go from companies to people, pass the `domain` column to [Decision Maker Finder by Domain](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/domain-to-decision-makers) or [Company Employees](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/company-employees).

### How much does it cost to find lookalike companies?

**$1.50 per 1,000 lookalikes delivered** ($0.0015 per company), plus the small Actor start fee.

| Row | Price |
|---|---|
| Lookalike delivered (`_status: found`) | $0.0015 |
| The seed company itself, and duplicate records of one company under a seed | $0 — never delivered |
| Seed whose domain no company on record uses (`seed_not_found`) | $0 |
| Seed shared by unrelated companies, none named like the domain (`ambiguous`) | $0 |
| Seed company without an industry on record (`seed_without_industry`) | $0 |
| Nothing else shares the seed's criteria (`no_lookalikes`) | $0 |
| Entry that is not a domain (`invalid`) | $0 |

The lookalike Actors on this shelf charge up to $1 per company for an opaque similarity score; here you pay the company-search price for explicit criteria. `maxPerSeed` is your spend cap: 50 seeds at the default of 25 cost at most $1.88.

### What a run looks like

Measured on the live database on 2026-10-09, three seeds, 10 lookalikes each, defaults: **20 lookalikes in 7 seconds**. `linear.app` returned US software companies of 135–540 people; `n26.com` returned German financial-services companies of 1,200–5,000 people. The third seed, `personio.de`, came back as a free `ambiguous` row: eight unrelated pages list the domain and none is named like it.

### Input

```json
{
  "seedDomains": ["linear.app"],
  "maxPerSeed": 25,
  "sameCountry": true,
  "sameSize": true,
  "countries": []
}
```

- `seedDomains` — required. Website domains of the companies you want more of, up to 50 per run.
- `maxPerSeed` — lookalikes per seed (default 25, maximum 500).
- `sameCountry` — on by default: lookalikes are headquartered in the seed's country. Ignored when `countries` is set.
- `sameSize` — on by default: between half and twice the seed's headcount. Not applied when the seed has fewer than 10 employees on record.
- `countries` — look in these countries instead of the seed's (two-letter codes, up to 10).

### Output

A lookalike (fictional values):

```json
{
  "_status": "found",
  "_input": { "seed": "linear.app" },
  "seed": "linear.app",
  "seedCompany": "Linear",
  "seedIndustry": "Software Development",
  "seedEmployeeCount": 270,
  "seedCountry": "US",
  "matchedOn": "industry, country, size",
  "companyId": 123456,
  "companyName": "Example Corp",
  "domain": "example.com",
  "website": "https://www.example.com",
  "linkedinUrl": "https://www.linkedin.com/company/example-corp",
  "industry": "Software Development",
  "employeeCount": 180,
  "employeeRange": "51-200",
  "country": "US",
  "hqLocality": "Austin, Texas",
  "founded": 2016,
  "description": "Example Corp builds project tracking software for engineering teams.",
  "hasFunding": true,
  "lastRoundType": "series_b",
  "lastRoundDate": "2024-05-14",
  "lastRoundAmountUsd": 40000000
}
```

### Lookalike company API, MCP and integrations

- **API** — start a run and read the dataset with the Apify API or the JavaScript and Python clients.
- **MCP** — call the Actor as a tool from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client through the Apify MCP server: "find companies like acme.com" is one call.
- **n8n, Make, Zapier** — expand every closed-won deal into its peers and drop them into the CRM.

### Use cases

- **Account expansion** — turn your best customers into a list of their peers.
- **Territory and ICP building** — take ten companies that match your ideal profile and get the hundreds that look like them.
- **Competitive mapping** — see who else plays in a seed's industry, country and size band.
- **Investor and market research** — list the companies in a segment from one example.

### FAQ

#### How does it decide what is similar?

By three facts from the seed's company card: its industry, its country and its headcount. Lookalikes share the industry, sit in the same country (unless you turn that off or name countries) and have between half and twice the seed's employee count. `matchedOn` on every row lists which of the three applied.

#### Why did a seed come back as "ambiguous" or "seed_not_found"?

A domain is not a unique key: many company pages can list a famous domain as their site. The seed is accepted only when a record is named like the domain, so a lookalike list is never built from a stranger. Try the company's own main domain, or the domain shown on its company page.

#### Can I search by my own criteria instead of a seed?

Yes — that is [Company Database Search](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/company-database-search): country, industry, headcount, funding stage and amount, with a free count preview.

#### Does it return people or emails?

No. It returns companies. For the people, pass the `domain` column to [Decision Maker Finder by Domain](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/domain-to-decision-makers), [Company Employees](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/company-employees) or [New Hires Finder](https://apify.com/b2bsearch/new-hires-finder).

#### Does it need cookies, a login or an API key?

No. The Actor does not sign in to any website and asks for no credentials.

### Use Lookalike Company Finder with AI agents and MCP

This Actor works as a tool for AI agents. Add it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any other MCP client through the Apify MCP server:

```
https://mcp.apify.com?tools=b2bsearch/lookalike-company-finder
```

- **One seed, one list.** An agent asked for "companies like X" sends one domain and reads back rows with explicit `matchedOn` criteria it can explain to the user.
- **The agent pays only for results.** $0.0015 per company; refusals free; cap a call with `maxTotalChargeUsd`.
- **Bounded cost.** `maxPerSeed` limits what one call can deliver and bill.

Input an agent can send as is:

```json
{
  "seedDomains": ["linear.app"],
  "maxPerSeed": 25
}
```

The same Actor is available as a tool in LangChain, CrewAI and the OpenAI Agents SDK, and as a step in n8n, Make and Zapier through the Apify integrations.
