## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

### 🏛️ What is SEC EDGAR Filings?

Paste a watchlist and receive SEC EDGAR filings as a spreadsheet-ready table. Annual 10-K, S-1 prospectuses or any other category appear newest first, each with accession number, size and the SEC's own web address. Data comes from the official public API, so there is no key, no proxy and no HTML parsing.

- **Investment research**: pull every 10-K and 10-Q of your watchlist and open the documents in one click
- **Insider trading alerts**: schedule a daily run for Form 4 filings and get notified when insiders trade
- **Event monitoring**: track 8-K filings by item number: earnings (2.02), leadership changes (5.02), material agreements (1.01)
- **Financial data pipelines and AI**: feed filing links into your parser, spreadsheet, RAG pipeline or AI agent
- **Compliance and due diligence**: build a dated list of a company's filings with industry code and state of incorporation

#### ✨ Why use this Actor?

- ✅ **Ticker or CIK**: type AAPL or 320193; the SEC's own list does the matching
- ✅ **Any form type**: pick 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, 4, S-1, DEF 14A or any other, or leave it empty for everything
- ✅ **Links you can open**: each row carries the main document address and the index page on sec.gov
- ✅ **8-K items included**: see at a glance whether an 8-K is about earnings, a leadership change or a new agreement
- ✅ **Fair access built in**: requests run one after another with a pause, well under the SEC's 10 per second, with a contact in the User-Agent as the SEC asks
- ✅ **Cheap**: 0.8 USD per 1,000 filings; companies that fail cost nothing

![How SEC EDGAR Filings works](https://api.apify.com/v2/key-value-stores/wdeAWGooHdIhvFgSY/records/sec-edgar-workflow.png)

### ⬇️ Input

Add tickers or CIK numbers, up to 200 per run. Form types, a start date and a cap per company are optional.

##### Ticker or CIK?

Both work and can be mixed. Symbols (`AAPL`, `BRK-B`) are looked up in the SEC's list; plain numeric IDs (`320193` or `0000320193`) are used directly. Use them for funds or private issuers, which trade under no code.

##### Form types

Write them as EDGAR does: `10-K`, `10-Q`, `8-K`, `4` (insider trades), `S-1`, `DEF 14A`, `13F-HR`. Leave `forms` empty to get every form. Amendments have their own type, for example `10-K/A`.

##### Contact email

The SEC asks every client to name a contact in its User-Agent. Put your own address in `contactEmail`; if left empty, the publisher's is used.

| Field | Type | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Companies** (`companies`) | array | Tickers (AAPL) or CIK numbers (320193). | `["AAPL"]` |
| **Form types** (`forms`) | array | Keep only these forms, e.g. |  |
| **Filed since** (`since`) | string | Keep filings on or after this date, e.g. |  |
| **Maximum filings per company** (`maxFilingsPerCompany`) | integer | Cap per company (newest first). | `50` |
| **Contact email** (`contactEmail`) | string | The SEC asks every client to name a contact in its User-Agent (sec.gov/os/accessing-edgar-data). |  |
| **Maximum retries** (`maxRetries`) | integer | Retries per request with exponential backoff on network errors, 429 and 5xx. | `3` |

#### Input example

```json
{
    "companies": [
        "AAPL",
        "MSFT"
    ],
    "forms": [
        "10-K",
        "10-Q"
    ],
    "maxFilingsPerCompany": 8
}
```

### ⬆️ Output

Every filing becomes one row, newest first, with the company facts repeated so the table stands alone. The run summary in the key-value store (`OUTPUT`) lists each input with the count found or the reason it failed.

#### Output example

One row of the dataset (Apple's 10-Q, from a real run):

```json
{
    "company": "Apple Inc.",
    "cik": "0000320193",
    "tickers": [
        "AAPL"
    ],
    "input": "AAPL",
    "filingDate": "2026-07-31",
    "reportDate": "2026-06-27",
    "sic": "3571",
    "industry": "Electronic Computers",
    "stateOfIncorporation": "CA"
}
```

#### Run summary and failed inputs

An unknown company does not stop the run and is never charged: it is listed in the run summary (`OUTPUT` in the key-value store) with the reason, and the run fails only when nothing answered. From a real run with `320193`, `TSLA` and `NOTATICKR`:

```json
{
    "ok": true,
    "rows": 10,
    "problems": [],
    "companies": [
        {
            "company": "320193",
            "ok": true,
            "rows": 5,
            "error": null
        },
        {
            "company": "TSLA",
            "ok": true,
            "rows": 5,
            "error": null
        },
        {
            "company": "NOTATICKR",
            "ok": false,
            "rows": 0,
            "error": "unknown ticker (not in the SEC ticker list; try the CIK)"
        }
    ]
}
```

View the results as a table or JSON in the Output tab and download them as JSON, CSV, Excel, XML, HTML or RSS, all fields or only those you pick.

### ❓ FAQ

##### Which filings are included?

The recent filings EDGAR lists for each company: at least a year, or up to 1,000 when it files more. That covers several years of 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings for most companies. Use `forms`, `since` and `maxFilingsPerCompany` (default 50, up to 1,000) to narrow it down.

##### Does it extract the numbers from the financial statements?

No. Each row is one filing with its dates, items and links. Open `documentUrl` for the report itself, or feed them into your own parser or an AI model.

##### How do I get insider trades?

Set `forms` to `4` (and `3` or `5` if you want initial and annual statements). Each row links to the Form 4 document with the trade details.

##### What do the 8-K items mean?

They are the SEC item numbers of the event reported, for example 2.02 results of operations, 5.02 departure or appointment of officers, 1.01 entry into a material agreement and 9.01 financial statements and exhibits.

##### Do I need an SEC or EDGAR API key?

No. EDGAR's API is free and public. The SEC only asks for a contact in the User-Agent, which the `contactEmail` field provides.

##### Is it legal to use SEC EDGAR Filings?

Yes. EDGAR filings are public records published by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and the EDGAR API is offered for exactly this kind of access. The Actor follows the SEC's fair-access policy: it names a contact in its User-Agent and stays well under 10 requests per second. Filings are informational, not investment advice.

##### What if something is missing or does not work?

Open an issue on the **Issues** tab; we read each one and reply. Feature requests are welcome too.
