## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

### 🏛️ What is US Federal Grants Finder?

US Federal Grants Finder reads Grants.gov, the official source of every US federal grant, and returns one clean row per call: title, issuing office, assistance listing ids, posting and close day with days left, maximum and minimum payout, total pot, expected winners, co-payment rules, who may apply, the text and the contact person. Filter by status, category or smallest sum, and switch on repeat mode to get only what is new since your last run.

- **Grant writers and consultants**: every open call your clients can apply for, with deadline and award size, in one sheet
- **Nonprofits, cities and tribes**: filter by who may apply and get only the grants you are eligible for
- **University research offices**: all NIH, NSF or DOE calls under your assistance listings, with days left
- **Daily grant alerts**: schedule alert mode and get only new opportunities by email, Slack or Google Sheets
- **Market research and AI agents**: structured federal funding data for analysis or for Claude and ChatGPT through MCP

#### ✨ Why use this Actor?

- ✅ **Official source**: the Grants.gov API, the same data as the Grants.gov website
- ✅ **Full details, not just titles**: award ceiling and floor, total funding, number of awards, eligibility text and contact on every row
- ✅ **Days left at a glance**: close date and remaining time computed for every opportunity
- ✅ **Department codes just work**: `HHS` or `NSF` expands to all their sub-agencies automatically
- ✅ **Alert mode**: only opportunities you have not received yet, per name
- ✅ **No start fee**: an alert run that finds only old listings costs zero

### 📦 What data can you get with US Federal Grants Finder?

### ⬇️ Input

Give keywords, agencies or assistance listing numbers, or only filters. By default you get forecasted and open (posted) opportunities, newest first, with full details.

##### Keyword, agency or CFDA?

A **keyword** searches Grants.gov (put a phrase in quotes for an exact match). An **agency** abbreviation such as `NSF`, `HHS` or `HHS-NIH11` narrows to that body; a department's covers all its sub-agencies. A **CFDA number** such as `93.855` restricts to that assistance listing.

##### Who may apply

`eligibilities` keeps only opportunities open to the applicant types you pick, such as nonprofits with 501(c)(3), small businesses, or public and private universities.

##### Alert mode

Switch on `onlyNew` and schedule the Actor daily: each run returns only opportunities no earlier run with the same `alertName` delivered.

| Field | Type | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Keywords** (`keywords`) | array | Words to search in Grants.gov, e.g. | `["rural health"]` |
| **Agencies** (`agencies`) | array | Grants.gov agency codes: a department such as HHS, NSF, USDA, DOE or DOC (all its sub-agencies), or a sub-agency such as HHS-NIH11 (NIH) or USDA-NIFA. | |
| **Assistance listing (CFDA) numbers** (`cfdaNumbers`) | array | Federal assistance listing numbers, e.g. | |
| **Statuses** (`statuses`) | array | forecasted (announced, not open yet), posted (open for applications), closed, archived. | `["forecasted","posted"]` |
| **Posted within the last days** (`postedWithinDays`) | integer | Only opportunities posted in this many days (Grants.gov knows 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and 56; other values round up). | `0` |
| **Funding categories** (`fundingCategories`) | array | Grants.gov category codes, e.g. | |
| **Eligible applicants** (`eligibilities`) | array | Return only grants open to these applicant types (for example small businesses, nonprofits, state governments, individuals). | |
| **Funding instruments** (`fundingInstruments`) | array | G (grant), CA (cooperative agreement), PC (procurement contract), O (other). | |
| **Minimum award ceiling (USD)** (`minAwardCeiling`) | integer | Keep only opportunities whose largest single award is at least this much. | `0` |
| **Include details** (`includeDetails`) | boolean | Read each opportunity's page data: award ceiling and floor, total funding, number of awards, eligibility, contact, description. | `true` |
| **Max opportunities** (`maxResults`) | integer | Stop after this many opportunities (newest first). | `100` |
| **Alert mode: only new opportunities** (`onlyNew`) | boolean | Return only opportunities not delivered by an earlier run with the same alert name. | `false` |
| **Alert name** (`alertName`) | string | Keeps separate alerts apart (one name per saved search). | `"default"` |
| **Max retries** (`maxRetries`) | integer | Retries per request on timeouts, rate limits and server errors. | `3` |

#### ⚠️ Searches without results or with errors

A search with no matches returns no rows and a tip in `OUTPUT` (widen the statuses, drop a filter, check the codes). One that breaks after all retries is named in `OUTPUT` with the reason and costs zero; if an opportunity's details cannot be read, its row still comes with the list fields. The run ends in failure only when every query broke.

View the results as a table or JSON in the Output tab and download them as JSON, CSV, Excel, XML, HTML or RSS, all fields or only those you pick.

### 💰 How much does US Federal Grants Finder cost?

US Federal Grants Finder is priced **per event**: **2 USD per 1,000 grant opportunities** (0.002 USD each), with no monthly rental. No start fee applies, so a scheduled alert run finding only old listings costs zero.

| You get | You pay |
|---|---|
| 100 grant opportunities | 0.2 USD |
| 1,000 grant opportunities | 2 USD |
| 10,000 grant opportunities | 20 USD |
| 100,000 grant opportunities | 200 USD |

💡 Apify's free plan gives you 5 USD of credit every month, enough for about **2,500 grant opportunities** at no cost. Set a spending limit per run and the Actor stops there.

### ⚖️ US Federal Grants Finder vs. the alternatives

| | US Federal Grants Finder | Grants.gov website | Typical grant scrapers |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Award amounts, eligibility and contact in the table** | ✅ | one page per grant | often titles only |
| **Several keywords and CFDA numbers in one run** | ✅ | one search at a time | varies |
| **Days left computed** | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ |
| **Alert mode: only new opportunities as data** | ✅ | ❌ | rarely |
| **Schedule, API and MCP for AI agents** | ✅ | ❌ | ✅ |

### ❓ FAQ

##### How fresh is the data?

Every run asks Grants.gov live; agencies post new opportunities every working day.

##### Why did my keyword find unrelated grants?

Grants.gov matches any of the words. Put the phrase in quotes, like `"rural health"`, for an exact match.

##### Why are some amounts empty?

The agency did not fill them in. This is common for NIH calls, which state a total budget instead of a ceiling.

##### Why do some close dates lie decades ahead?

Some standing programs are listed at Grants.gov with a close date decades in the future. The Actor passes it on exactly as published.

##### How many opportunities can I get?

Up to 10,000 per run (`maxResults`, default 100), newest first.

##### Is it legal to use US Federal Grants Finder?

Yes. Grants.gov opportunity data is published by the US federal government for public use, and the Actor reads it through the official Grants.gov API, at most 3 requests at once. Always confirm deadlines and eligibility in the original notice before you apply. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Grants.gov or any US agency.

##### What if something is missing or does not work?

Open an issue on the **Issues** tab; we read each one and reply. Feature requests are welcome too.
