## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Broken Link Checker for Whole Websites

Find every broken link and broken image on your website. Enter a URL. The Actor crawls the site, checks each unique link once, and reports the failures. Each result shows the link, the HTTP status or error, the page where the link appears, and its anchor text, so you can fix it in minutes.

### What you get

- **Broken links and images:** 404, 410, 500 errors, timeouts, DNS failures, and SSL errors
- **Where each one appears:** the source page, plus the anchor text or alt text
- **Link type:** internal or external, and link or image
- **Redirects (optional):** links that redirect, for clean-up after a site migration
- **Summary:** a `SUMMARY` record with pages crawled, links checked, and the broken count

Download the results as CSV, Excel, or JSON, or open the "Problems" table view.

### How to use it

1. Add your website URL.
2. Set **Max pages to crawl**.
3. Turn external links, images, and redirects on or off.
4. Click **Start**.

### Pricing

You pay per unique link checked. The crawler checks each URL only once, even if it appears on hundreds of pages. There are no monthly fees.

### Sample output

```json
{
  "problem": "broken",
  "linkUrl": "https://example.com/old-pricing",
  "statusCode": 404,
  "foundOnPage": "https://example.com/blog/launch-post",
  "anchorOrAltText": "see our pricing",
  "elementType": "link",
  "linkType": "internal"
}
```

### Good crawling manners

- The crawler follows `robots.txt`.
- It stays on your site when crawling.
- It sends one lightweight request per external link.
- It limits concurrency.
- It never logs in or bypasses access controls.

Only check sites you own or have permission to analyze.

### Use cases

- Monthly website maintenance
- Pre-launch QA and post-migration checks
- SEO clean-up, since broken links waste crawl budget
- Agencies auditing client sites

# Actor input Schema

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

Homepage or any page of each site to check. The crawler stays on the same site and respects robots.txt.

## `maxPages` (type: `integer`):

How many pages of the site to scan for links.

## `checkExternalLinks` (type: `boolean`):

Also verify links that point to other websites.

## `checkImages` (type: `boolean`):

Also verify <img> sources.

## `reportRedirects` (type: `boolean`):

Also list links that redirect (useful for cleaning up after a migration).
