## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

## ClinicalTrials.gov Scraper 🧬

Scrape clinical trials from **ClinicalTrials.gov** — the world's largest registry of clinical studies. Search by keyword, condition, intervention/drug, or sponsor, and get structured trial data ready for analysis.

Perfect for **pharma & biotech market research, competitive intelligence, CRO / site feasibility, investors, medical literature reviews, and RAG / AI datasets.**

### What it extracts (one row per study)

- `nct_id`, `title`, `official_title`, `organization`
- `status`, `study_type`, `phases`, `enrollment`
- `conditions`, `keywords`, `interventions` (type + name)
- `lead_sponsor`, `lead_sponsor_class`, `collaborators`
- `start_date`, `primary_completion_date`, `completion_date`, `last_update_posted`
- `eligibility_sex`, `minimum_age`, `maximum_age`, `healthy_volunteers`, `eligibility_criteria`
- `brief_summary`, `location_count`, `locations` (facility/city/state/country)
- `url`

### Input

```json
{
  "terms": ["semaglutide obesity"],
  "conditions": ["Type 2 Diabetes"],
  "interventions": ["pembrolizumab"],
  "sponsor": "Pfizer",
  "statusFilter": ["RECRUITING", "COMPLETED"],
  "maxItemsPerQuery": 500
}
```

- **terms** — full-text queries (search the whole study).
- **conditions** — disease/condition searches (one search each).
- **interventions** — drug/intervention searches (one search each).
- **sponsor** — optional lead-sponsor filter applied to every search.
- **statusFilter** — optional overall-status filter (RECRUITING, COMPLETED, …).

### Output example

```json
{
  "type": "study",
  "nct_id": "NCT03548935",
  "title": "Semaglutide Effects in Obesity",
  "status": "COMPLETED",
  "phases": ["PHASE3"],
  "enrollment": 1961,
  "conditions": ["Obesity", "Overweight"],
  "interventions": [{ "type": "DRUG", "name": "Semaglutide" }],
  "lead_sponsor": "Novo Nordisk A/S",
  "start_date": "2018-06-04",
  "completion_date": "2020-03-31",
  "location_count": 129,
  "url": "https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT03548935"
}
```

### Notes

- Uses the **official ClinicalTrials.gov API v2** — free, stable, no key.
- Pagination handled automatically via page tokens.
- No proxy required.

# Actor input Schema

## `terms` (type: `array`):

Free-text queries (full-text search across the whole study). Example: 'GLP-1 obesity' or 'CAR-T lymphoma'.

## `conditions` (type: `array`):

Disease / condition searches, one search each. Example: 'Type 2 Diabetes', 'Breast Cancer'.

## `interventions` (type: `array`):

Intervention / drug searches, one search each. Example: 'pembrolizumab', 'metformin'.

## `sponsor` (type: `string`):

Optional lead sponsor / organization name applied to every search. Example: 'Pfizer'.

## `statusFilter` (type: `array`):

Optional overall-status filter applied to every search. Leave empty for all statuses.

## `maxItemsPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

Stop after this many studies per search.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Optional. ClinicalTrials.gov is an open API; proxy usually not needed.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "terms": [
    "semaglutide obesity"
  ],
  "conditions": [],
  "interventions": [],
  "sponsor": "",
  "statusFilter": [],
  "maxItemsPerQuery": 200,
  "proxyConfiguration": {
    "useApifyProxy": false
  }
}
```

// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});

// Prepare Actor input
const input = {

    "conditions": [],
    "interventions": [],
    "proxyConfiguration": {
        "useApifyProxy": false
    }
};

// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("bgfc97/clinicaltrials-scraper").call(input);

// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
