## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## Instagram Profile Scraper

Scrape **public** Instagram profile data — bio, follower/following counts,
post count, profile picture URL, and verification status — by supplying a
list of usernames or profile URLs. No login is required, and only data
visible on the public, unauthenticated profile page is collected.

### Features

- Accepts usernames (`natgeo`) or full profile URLs (`https://www.instagram.com/natgeo/`)
- Extracts: full name, bio, follower count, following count, post count,
  profile picture URL, verification status
- Optional Apify Proxy support to reduce rate limiting
- Configurable delay between requests
- Results saved to the Actor's default dataset (exportable as JSON, CSV, Excel, etc.)

### Input

| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `usernames` | array of strings | Usernames or profile URLs to scrape |
| `proxyConfiguration` | object | Apify Proxy configuration (recommended) |
| `requestDelaySecs` | integer | Delay in seconds between each profile request (default: 2) |

Example input:

```json
{
  "usernames": ["natgeo", "https://www.instagram.com/nasa/"],
  "proxyConfiguration": { "useApifyProxy": true },
  "requestDelaySecs": 2
}
```

### Output

Each scraped profile is pushed to the dataset as a record, e.g.:

```json
{
  "username": "natgeo",
  "fullName": "National Geographic",
  "bio": "Experience the world through the eyes of National Geographic...",
  "followers": "279M",
  "following": "150",
  "posts": "28.4K",
  "profilePicUrl": "https://...",
  "isVerified": true,
  "profileUrl": "https://www.instagram.com/natgeo/"
}
```

If a profile can't be parsed (private, restricted, or page structure
changed), the record will include an `error` or `warning` field explaining why.

### Important notes on scope and compliance

- This Actor only reads data that Instagram serves on the **public** profile
  page without authentication (meta tags such as `og:title`, `og:description`,
  `og:image`). It does **not** log in, use session cookies, or attempt to
  access private profiles or data hidden behind authentication.
- Instagram's page structure and public data availability can change at any
  time, which may require updates to the parsing logic in `src/main.py`.
- Automated scraping of Instagram is subject to
  [Instagram's Terms of Use](https://help.instagram.com/581066165581870).
  Review current terms and applicable laws in your jurisdiction (e.g. data
  protection regulations) before using this Actor at scale or on data
  involving identifiable individuals.
- Using Apify Proxy and a reasonable `requestDelaySecs` is strongly
  recommended to avoid triggering rate limits.

### Local development

This Actor uses the [Apify SDK for Python](https://docs.apify.com/sdk/python/)
and the standard Apify Python Actor project layout:

```
.actor/
  actor.json          # Actor metadata
  input_schema.json    # Input UI schema
src/
  main.py               # Scraping logic (entry point)
Dockerfile
requirements.txt
```

To build and run, use the **Build** and **Start** buttons in the Apify
Console — no terminal required.

# Actor input Schema

## `usernames` (type: `array`):

List of Instagram usernames (e.g. "natgeo") or full profile URLs (e.g. "https://www.instagram.com/natgeo/") to scrape.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Proxy settings used to fetch profile pages. Using Apify Proxy is recommended to avoid rate limiting.

## `requestDelaySecs` (type: `integer`):

Delay added between each profile fetch to reduce the chance of rate limiting.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "usernames": [
    "instagram"
  ],
  "proxyConfiguration": {
    "useApifyProxy": true
  },
  "requestDelaySecs": 2
}
```

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "usernames": [
        "instagram"
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("bornoo/instagram-profile-scraper").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
