## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Outdooractive Trail & Route Scraper

Collect publicly available **Outdooractive (outdooractive.com)** hiking trails
and routes as clean, structured records. Feed the actor region listing pages
and/or direct route pages; it returns one rich record per route — distance,
ascent, descent, duration, difficulty, start coordinates, elevation, author and
more.

### Input

| field | description |
|---|---|
| `startUrls` | Outdooractive URLs to scrape. **Region listing** pages (e.g. `https://www.outdooractive.com/en/hikes/virginia/hiking-trails-in-virginia/23760423`) — the actor follows every route-card link on them. **Direct route** pages (e.g. `https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/hiking-trail/.../256357994`) — scraped straight away. You can mix both. |
| `maxItems` | Cap on total routes returned (`0` = no cap). |
| `proxyConfiguration` | Uses Apify Residential by default — **no external proxy key needed**. |

### What you get (one record per route)

| field | description |
|---|---|
| `guide_id` | stable numeric route id |
| `title` | route name |
| `guide_url` | route page URL |
| `region` | geographic region |
| `activity_type` | e.g. Hiking Trail, Long-Distance Hiking |
| `difficulty` | easy / moderate / difficult |
| `distance_km` | route length in km |
| `ascent_m` / `descent_m` | total elevation gain / loss in metres |
| `altitude_from_m` / `altitude_to_m` | lowest / highest point in metres |
| `duration_min` / `duration` | moving time in minutes and `h:mm` |
| `round_trip` | whether the route returns to its start |
| `description` | route summary |
| `author` | the publishing source / organisation |
| `lat` / `lng` | start coordinates |
| `elevation_start_m` | start elevation in metres |
| `features` | trip tags (Scenic, Family-friendly, Dog-friendly, …) |
| `image_url` | lead image |
| `rating` / `rating_count` | average rating and number of reviews (when present) |

### How it works

Each route page is server-rendered and carries a schema.org JSON-LD block, so
the scraper reads the route's structured data directly (resistant to cosmetic
markup changes). Region listing pages are parsed for their route-card links,
which are then followed to the detail pages. Distances and elevations are
returned in metric units. Requests use a residential proxy for reliable access;
you only supply the URLs.

### Pricing

Pay per result — you are charged once per route record written to the dataset.
Compute runs on your own Apify account.

### Notes

This tool collects publicly available outdoor route data for research and
aggregation.

# Actor input Schema

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

Outdooractive URLs to scrape. Two shapes are accepted: (1) a region listing page such as https://www.outdooractive.com/en/hikes/virginia/hiking-trails-in-virginia/23760423 — the actor follows every route-card link on it; (2) a direct route page such as https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/hiking-trail/.../256357994 — scraped straight away. You can mix both.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of route records to return across all start URLs. Default 0 = no cap.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Proxy used to reach outdooractive.com. Apify RESIDENTIAL is recommended and used by default — no external proxy key required.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "startUrls": [
    "https://www.outdooractive.com/en/hikes/virginia/hiking-trails-in-virginia/23760423"
  ],
  "proxyConfiguration": {
    "useApifyProxy": true,
    "apifyProxyGroups": [
      "RESIDENTIAL"
    ]
  }
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

Dataset of scraped route records.
