## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

### What does GitHub Repo Activity: Last Commit, Commits & Release Notes do?

GitHub Repo Activity tells you **whether a GitHub repository is still maintained and what changed in its latest release**.

Give it repositories, like `facebook/react` or `https://github.com/vercel/next.js`. For each one you get the date of the last commit and how many days ago that was, a plain verdict (`active`, `slowing`, `quiet` or `inactive`), the most recent commits, and the latest releases with their full release notes.

It never signs in anywhere and never changes anything. It only reads public repositories.

### Why use it?

- **Choosing a dependency.** Before you rely on a library, see in one row whether anyone still commits to it and when it last shipped a release.
- **Tracking what changed.** Put the tools you depend on in one run and read each one's newest release notes side by side, or schedule it to keep a changelog feed.
- **Auditing a list of repositories.** Check a whole stack, a portfolio or an awesome-list for abandoned projects at once.
- **AI agents.** Connect it as an MCP server and let an agent answer "is this repo maintained, and what is new in the last release?" while it works.

### How it works

For each repository:

1. It reads the repository's commit history on GitHub, newest first.
2. It reads the repository's published releases, newest first, with their notes.
3. It returns one row: the activity verdict and latest release at the top, the full lists below.

The verdict comes from the last commit: `active` within 30 days, `slowing` within 180, `quiet` within a year, `inactive` after that.

### Input

| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `repos` | Yes | One repository per entry: `"owner/name"` or a github.com link. Links to a branch, a file or a `.git` address work too. |
| `maxCommits` | No | Newest commits to return per repository, 1 to 100. Default `10`. |
| `maxReleases` | No | Newest releases to return per repository, 1 to 100. Default `5`. |
| `includeReleaseNotes` | No | Return the notes of every release, not only the latest. Default `true`. |
| `maxConcurrency` | No | Repositories processed at once, 1 to 8. Default `4`. |

Example input:

```json
{ "repos": ["facebook/react", "https://github.com/psf/requests", "request/request"], "maxCommits": 3 }
```

### Output

One dataset row per repository. Download it as JSON, CSV, Excel or HTML, or read it through the Apify API.

```json
{
  "input": "github.com/psf/requests",
  "repo": "psf/requests",
  "repoUrl": "https://github.com/psf/requests",
  "status": "found",
  "activity": "active",
  "lastCommitAt": "2026-10-26T17:14:41Z",
  "daysSinceLastCommit": 1,
  "lastCommitMessage": "Bump the actions group with 4 updates (#7636)",
  "lastCommitAuthor": "dependabot[bot]",
  "latestRelease": "v2.34.2",
  "latestReleaseAt": "2026-05-14T19:27:15Z",
  "daysSinceLatestRelease": 166,
  "latestReleaseNotes": "2.34.2 (2026-05-14)\r\n-------------------\r\n- Moved `headers` input type back to `Mapping` ...",
  "commits": [
    { "sha": "3c7baaa", "date": "2026-10-26T17:14:41Z", "author": "dependabot[bot]", "message": "Bump the actions group with 4 updates (#7636)", "url": "https://github.com/psf/requests/commit/3c7baaa05ab4aa49cc819ce3a819d260de19c157" }
  ],
  "releases": [
    { "tag": "v2.34.2", "name": "v2.34.2", "prerelease": false, "publishedAt": "2026-05-14T19:27:15Z", "notes": "...", "url": "https://github.com/psf/requests/releases/tag/v2.34.2" }
  ],
  "warnings": [],
  "error": null
}
```

`status` is `found` or `error`. A repository with no releases is normal (many projects never publish one), so the release fields are simply empty and the row is still `found`.

### Pricing

**$0.001 per repository**, with no monthly fee.

- A repository that does not exist, is private, or an entry that is not a repository address is an error row and is not charged.
- Set a spending limit on the run and the Actor stops cleanly when it reaches it.
- On Apify's free plan, each run processes the first 10 repositories (10 tool calls per MCP session). Any paid Apify plan removes the limit.

### Use it as an MCP server

This Actor also runs as an MCP server with one tool, `check_repo_activity`. Point any MCP client (Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, your own agent) at:

```
https://bowmark-ai--github-repo-activity-finder.apify.actor/mcp
```

with your Apify API token as a bearer token. Each tool call is billed like one repository in a normal run.

### Limits and good practice

- It reads only **public** repositories on GitHub. It never signs in anywhere and never changes anything.
- Give `owner/name` or a full github.com link. A project name alone ("react") is not enough, because many repositories share a name.
- The verdict looks at the default branch only. A project that works on another branch can read as `quiet`; check `releases` too.

### Related Actors

- **[GitHub Commit History](https://apify.com/Bowmark-AI/github-commit-history)**: a repository's commit log alone, newest first, with authors, dates and messages.
- **[GitHub Release Notes](https://apify.com/Bowmark-AI/github-release-notes)**: a repository's release notes alone, with a "since my version" filter for upgrades.

# Actor input Schema

## `repos` (type: `array`):

One repository per entry: "owner/name" ("facebook/react") or a github.com link ("https://github.com/vercel/next.js"). Public repositories only. Up to 500 per run (10 on Apify's free plan).

## `maxCommits` (type: `integer`):

How many of the newest commits to return for each repository.

## `maxReleases` (type: `integer`):

How many of the newest releases to return for each repository.

## `includeReleaseNotes` (type: `boolean`):

Return the full notes text for every release, not only the latest. Turn off for smaller rows.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many repositories are processed in parallel.

## Actor input object example
