## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

Get iOS App Store reviews for any app, in one or many countries. Each review is one row with the star rating, title, text, app version, author and date. You can keep only certain star ratings, only reviews that mention certain words, or only recent reviews.

Turn on **monitor mode** and schedule the Actor daily: each run returns only the reviews that earlier runs did not return, so you see (and pay for) new reviews only.

### For AI agents

Use this Actor when you need recent iOS App Store reviews for one or more apps, for complaint analysis, release checks or competitor research. Not for Google Play reviews or reviews older than Apple's latest 500 per country.

- **Actor id:** `brightknot/app-store-reviews-monitor`
- **Required input:** `apps`
- **Call:** MCP `call-actor` with the input below, then `get-dataset-items`. Over HTTP: `POST https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/brightknot~app-store-reviews-monitor/run-sync-get-dataset-items` with the input as the JSON body.
- **Cap the spend** with `maxTotalChargeUsd` in the call options, not in the input.

#### Example input

```json
{
  "apps": ["https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252"],
  "countries": ["us", "gb"],
  "maxReviewsPerApp": 50,
  "ratings": ["1", "2"],
  "monitorMode": false
}
```

#### Example output row

Trimmed to the main fields. See the Output schema tab for every field.

```json
{
  "app_id": "389801252",
  "app_name": "Instagram",
  "country": "us",
  "review_id": "14648681449",
  "rating": 1,
  "title": "The new update for iPad so bad!",
  "text": "Why you would something perfect to this stupid update for iPad!",
  "version": "450.1.0",
  "author": "Sample User",
  "date": "2026-10-10T06:47:42Z",
  "app_url": "https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252"
}
```

A `SUMMARY` record has a star histogram per app and country.

#### Cost per call

| Event | Price | When |
|---|---|---|
| Review | USD 0.0005 | per review row returned (USD 0.50 per 1,000) |
| Actor start | USD 0.005 | once per run |

The example input returns at most 100 reviews, so it costs at most USD 0.055.

#### Limits

- Apple publishes only the 500 most recent reviews per app per country.
- Usually finishes in under a minute per app and country.
- `monitorMode` defaults to true. Set it to false for one-off pulls, or a repeat call can return 0 rows.
- No credentials needed. Runs with limited permissions.

### What it does

- Reads reviews for apps given as an App Store URL, a numeric app id, or an app name.
- Reads one or more App Store countries (storefronts). Each country has its own set of reviews. Use `all` for 40 large storefronts.
- Filters by star rating, keywords in the title or text, and review age.
- Adds app details to each row: app name, developer, average rating and number of ratings in that country.
- Saves a run summary with review counts, the average rating and a star rating histogram for each app and country.

### Use cases

- **App developers after a release:** run it daily with ratings 1 and 2 and get the new complaints about the latest version, with the version number on every review.
- **Agencies monitoring client apps:** one scheduled task per client, each with its own monitor name, feeding new reviews into a sheet, Slack or a ticket queue through Apify integrations.
- **Competitor research:** pull the most recent reviews of competing apps in several countries and look for repeated complaints and feature requests.
- **Product managers:** track keywords such as `crash`, `login`, `subscription` or `refund` across countries and see when they start to appear.

### Input

| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Apps | One per line. An App Store URL (`https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252`), a numeric id (`389801252`), or an app name (`Instagram`). For a name, the first App Store search result is used. |
| Countries | 2-letter country codes such as `us`, `gb`, `de`, `ae`, `jp`. `all` reads 40 large storefronts. If you leave it empty, the country in each app URL is used, or `us`. Default `us`. |
| Max reviews per app per country | At most this many reviews per app in each country, newest first, counted after filters. Default 500, which is also the most Apple publishes. |
| Star ratings | Only these star ratings, for example 1 and 2. Empty means all. |
| Keywords | Only reviews whose title or text contains one of these words or phrases. Not case sensitive. |
| Only reviews from the last N days | Only reviews posted in the last N days. Empty means no date limit. |
| Monitor mode | Only return reviews that earlier runs with the same monitor name did not return. On by default. |
| Monitor name | A separate memory of seen reviews for each name. Use one name per schedule or client. |
| Add app details to each row | Adds app name, developer, average rating, rating count and App Store link to each row. On by default. |

Example input:

```json
{
  "apps": [
    "https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252",
    "Spotify",
    "544007664"
  ],
  "countries": ["us", "gb", "ae"],
  "ratings": ["1", "2"],
  "keywords": ["crash", "login"],
  "sinceDays": 30,
  "monitorMode": true,
  "monitorName": "client-a-daily"
}
```

### Output (one row per review)

```json
{
  "change_type": "new",
  "app_id": "389801252",
  "app_name": "Instagram",
  "developer": "Instagram, Inc.",
  "country": "us",
  "review_id": "14648675769",
  "rating": 1,
  "title": "Scheduling bug! Please fix",
  "text": "I cannot schedule my reel because it automatically tags a product. Even after I delete the tag it still disables scheduling, please fix",
  "version": "450.1.0",
  "author": "Sample User 2",
  "date": "2026-10-10T06:45:11Z",
  "vote_sum": 2,
  "vote_count": 3,
  "app_average_rating": 4.69,
  "app_rating_count": 29578481,
  "app_url": "https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252",
  "review_language_guess": "en",
  "scraped_at": "2026-10-11T07:00:00Z"
}
```

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `change_type` | `new` in monitor mode. Empty when monitor mode is off. |
| `country` | The storefront the review was posted in. |
| `rating` | Stars, 1 to 5. |
| `version` | The app version the reviewer was using. |
| `date` | When the review was posted or last edited, in UTC. |
| `vote_sum`, `vote_count` | Helpful votes and total votes on the review, as published by Apple. |
| `app_average_rating`, `app_rating_count` | The app's average rating and number of ratings in that country at run time. |
| `review_language_guess` | A rough guess (ISO code such as `en`, `de`, `ja`, `ar`) from the writing script and common words. Empty when unsure. |

A run summary is saved as `SUMMARY` in the run's key-value store. For each app and country it has the status, pages read, reviews read, reviews returned, the average rating of the returned reviews and a 1 to 5 star histogram. Apps that were not found are listed under `not_found`.

### Pricing

$0.50 per 1,000 reviews, plus $0.005 per run.

You pay for each review row in the results. Filters are applied before output, so reviews that do not match are not charged. In monitor mode a daily run only pays for the reviews that are new since the last run. For example, an app that gets 40 new reviews a day costs about $0.025 a day ($0.02 for reviews plus $0.005 for the run). The first run of a monitor returns the current reviews (up to your maximum), so set a lower maximum on the first run if you only want to start tracking from now.

### How it works

1. App names are looked up with Apple's public iTunes Search API. URLs and ids are used as given.
2. For each app and country, the Actor reads Apple's public customer reviews feed, newest first, 50 reviews per page. It stops at the last page, at an empty page, at your maximum, or when the reviews get older than your date limit.
3. App details come from Apple's public iTunes Lookup API.
4. In monitor mode, the ids of returned reviews are saved in a named key-value store (`appstore-reviews-monitor-state`) under your monitor name, and skipped on later runs.

These are official public Apple feeds. No login, no cookies and no proxies are used. Requests are limited to a few at a time with a short pause, and rate limit or server errors are retried with backoff.

### Limits

- Apple exposes only the **500 most recent reviews per app per country** (10 pages of 50). Older reviews cannot be read this way. To build a longer history, run the Actor in monitor mode on a schedule.
- Apple's feed contains reviews with text. Star-only ratings are not included, but they are counted in `app_rating_count`.
- Apple's feed can lag the App Store page by a few hours.
- Each country is separate. A review posted in the UK store appears only under `gb`.
- `review_language_guess` is a simple heuristic. Arabic script is reported as `ar` and Cyrillic as `ru` (or `uk` when Ukrainian letters appear), and short Latin-script reviews are often left empty.

### FAQ

**Where do I find an app's id?** It is the number after `id` in the App Store URL, for example `389801252` in `https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252`.

**I gave an app name and got the wrong app.** Name lookup takes the first App Store search result. Paste the App Store URL or the id instead.

**Why did a country return no reviews?** The app may not be sold there, or nobody has written a review there yet. The summary shows the status for each country.

**Does the first monitor run return everything?** Yes. On the first run every review is new to the monitor, up to your maximum per country. Later runs return only reviews that were not returned before.

**What happens if I change filters in monitor mode?** Reviews that were filtered out before were never returned, so they can be returned later if they match the new filters.

**Can I run several monitors?** Yes. Each monitor name keeps its own memory, so use one name per client, app list or schedule.

**Does it collect personal data?** Each review includes the public nickname the reviewer chose on the App Store. Nothing else about the reviewer is collected.

# Actor input Schema

## `apps` (type: `array`):

Apps to read, one per item: an App Store URL (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instagram/id389801252), a numeric app id (389801252) or an app name (the first App Store search result is used).

## `countries` (type: `array`):

App Store storefronts to read, as 2-letter country codes (us, gb, de, ae, jp). Each country has its own reviews. Write 'all' for 40 large storefronts. Leave empty to use the country in each app URL, or us.

## `maxReviewsPerApp` (type: `integer`):

Return at most this many reviews for each app in each country, newest first. Apple publishes the 500 most recent reviews per country, so 500 is the maximum.

## `ratings` (type: `array`):

Only return reviews with these star ratings, e.g. 1 and 2 for complaints. Leave empty for all ratings.

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

Only return reviews whose title or text contains at least one of these words or phrases (not case sensitive), e.g. crash, login, refund. Leave empty for all reviews.

## `sinceDays` (type: `integer`):

Only return reviews posted in the last N days. Leave empty or 0 for no date limit.

## `monitorMode` (type: `boolean`):

Remember which reviews were returned and, on later runs, return only reviews not returned before. The first run returns the current reviews. Schedule it daily and you only pay for new reviews. For a one-off pull set it to false, otherwise a repeat call can return 0 rows.

## `monitorName` (type: `string`):

Keeps a separate memory of seen reviews for each name. Use a different name for each schedule or client so they do not share state.

## `includeAppInfo` (type: `boolean`):

Add the app name, developer, average rating, rating count and App Store link to every review row. Turn off for smaller rows.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many requests to Apple run at the same time. Keep it low to avoid rate limits.
