## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Barcode / EAN Product Info Scraper

Look up **UPC, EAN, GTIN or ISBN-13** barcodes and get structured catalog data: title, multilingual description, brand, category, product images, and PDF manuals when available.

This actor is for **product enrichment**, not store prices. Failed barcodes are free (listed in the key-value store as `FAILED_BARCODES`).

### What you get per result

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `barcode`, `barcodeType` | Normalized digits + EAN-13 / UPC-A / etc. |
| `title`, `titles` | Best title + map by language (`en`, `de`, `fr`, …) |
| `description`, `descriptions` | Product / generic name text by language |
| `brand`, `manufacturer`, `category`, `categories` | Identity |
| `images` | Product photo URLs |
| `ingredients`, `ingredientsByLanguage` | When the product is in Open Food/Beauty Facts |
| `manuals` | `{ title, url }` PDF / guide links (optional) |
| `sources` | Which databases contributed (`openfoodfacts`, `go-upc`, …) |
| `scrapedAt` | ISO timestamp |

### How to use

1. Paste one or more barcodes (8–14 digits).
2. Optionally set **Preferred language** (`en`, `de`, `fr`, …) and whether to search for manuals.
3. Run and download the dataset as JSON, CSV or Excel.

### Input

| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `barcodes` | yes\* | List of UPC / EAN / GTIN / ISBN-13 codes |
| `queries` | alias | Same as `barcodes` |
| `preferredLanguage` | no | Prefer this language for title/description |
| `includeManuals` | no | Search for PDF manuals (default true) |
| `maxManuals` | no | Cap manual links per product (default 5) |
| `maxItems` | no | Stop after N successful rows |

\* Provide `barcodes` and/or `queries`.

### Example output

```json
{
  "barcode": "3017620422003",
  "barcodeType": "EAN-13",
  "title": "Nutella",
  "titles": { "en": "Nutella", "fr": "Nutella", "ar": "نوتيلا" },
  "description": "Hazelnut And Cocoa Spread",
  "brand": "Nutella",
  "category": "en:Confectionary based spreads",
  "images": ["https://images.openfoodfacts.org/images/products/.../front_en.879.400.jpg"],
  "manuals": [],
  "sources": ["openfoodfacts", "go-upc", "buycott"],
  "scrapedAt": "2026-09-29T12:00:00.000Z"
}
```

### Pricing

Pay per successful product row. Failures are not charged. Use Apify’s max-spend cap to limit cost.

### Notes

- Sources include Open Food Facts / Beauty Facts / Products Facts, go-upc, buycott, upcitemdb, and DuckDuckGo for PDF manuals.
- Coverage varies by barcode; food/cosmetics are richest. Manuals are best-effort web search hits.
- Use results in line with each source’s terms of use.
