## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Court Reporters Board of California — License Directory

Search the [Court Reporters Board of California (CRB)](https://connect.courtreportersboard.ca.gov/) public license directory by name, license number, license type, license status, and county — the same filters available on the Board's own search tool.

### What it does

1. Builds the same search request the CRB's directory site sends when you use its search filters.
2. Pages through all matching results (50 records per page).
3. Saves one row per licensee to the dataset.

This is a JSON-API-based scraper (no browser), so it's fast and lightweight.

### Input

All fields are optional — leave everything blank to fetch all licensees (not recommended without also setting a reasonable **Max results**).

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| **Name** | Free-text name search. |
| **License Number** | Search by an exact or partial license number. |
| **License Type** | Court Reporter Firm (CRF), Temp - Certified Shorthand Reporter, or Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR). |
| **License Status** | e.g. Active, Expired, Revoked, Delinquent, Suspended, Surrendered, Deceased, Cancelled, Pending Renewal. |
| **County** | California county of record. The list also includes a handful of non-California entries (e.g. "Out Of State", "Out Of Country") and some values that appear to be inherited from a shared facet list used across Board sites — if a county looks out of place for California, it's likely one of these. |
| **Max results** | Caps how many licensee records are fetched. Default 5|

Dropdown values (license type, status, county) are taken directly from the values accepted by the Board's own search form.

## Here is an example of what the actor input could be:

### Output

One dataset row per licensee:

`name`, `first_name`, `last_name`, `entity_name`, `license_number`, `original_license_date`, `license_effective_date`, `license_expiration_date`, `license_type`, `license_status_type`, `address`, `street_line1`, `street_line2`, `city`, `zip`, `public_email`, `county_name`, `secondary_statuses`, `certification_method`

## Here is an example of the structured data overview captured by the actor:

<img src="https://i.redd.it/5u8pmywhcsyh1.png" alt="Actor Output Example">

### Example use cases

- Verifying whether a specific court reporter or firm holds an active license before engaging them.
- Building a directory of licensed court reporters in a specific California county.
- Monitoring license status changes (e.g. tracking suspensions or revocations) via periodic re-runs.

### Known limitations

- This Actor depends on the structure of the CRB's public search API, which is not an officially documented/versioned API. If the Board changes its site, this Actor may need updating.

### Cost

This is a lightweight HTTP-only Actor (no browser), so compute cost per run is low. Cost scales primarily with **Max results**.
