## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## IRS Exempt Organization Status Check

Check a US nonprofit's IRS status by **EIN**, with three IRS sources joined into **one result per organization**:

- **Exempt Organizations Business Master File (EO BMF)**: name, address, subsection (e.g. 501(c)(3)), ruling date, deductibility, foundation code, NTEE code, filing requirement, asset/income/revenue amounts.
- **Automatic Revocation of Exemption List**: revocation date, posting date and **exemption reinstatement date** for organizations that lost exemption for not filing for three consecutive years.
- **Publication 78**: whether the organization is listed as eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions, with its deductibility code.

Data comes live from the IRS bulk downloads on every run (irs.gov and apps.irs.gov), not from a cached copy. Every result lists the exact source files, their fetch time and SHA-256, so you can show where each value came from.

### Use cases

- **Donor and grant due diligence:** confirm a grantee is still exempt and listed in Pub 78 before paying.
- **Revocation and reinstatement checks:** see whether an organization was ever automatically revoked, and whether and when it was reinstated.
- **Bulk screening:** check up to 10,000 EINs per run, or pull every organization in a state.

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `mode` | `ein` (look up EINs) or `state` (every organization in one state) |
| `eins` | list of EINs; dashes are fine (`53-0196605`) |
| `state` | two-letter code for `state` mode, e.g. `TX` |
| `includeRevocations` | join the revocation list (default on) |
| `includePub78` | join Publication 78 (default on) |
| `maxResults` | stop after this many organizations |

### Output (one item per organization)

```json
{
  "ein": "530196605",
  "found": {"bmf": true, "revocations": false, "pub78": true},
  "bmf": {"EIN": "530196605", "NAME": "AMERICAN NATIONAL RED CROSS", "STATE": "DC", "SUBSECTION": "03", "...": "..."},
  "revocations": [],
  "pub78": {"TIN": "530196605", "DEDUCTIBILITY_CODE": "PC", "...": "..."},
  "sources": [{"file": "eo1.csv", "url": "https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-soi/eo1.csv", "fetched_at": "...", "sha256": "..."}]
}
```

Values are exactly as the IRS publishes them (text, original codes and date formats). Look up codes in the IRS documentation: [EO BMF layout](https://www.irs.gov/pub/foia/ig/tege/eo-info.pdf), [revocation list dictionary](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/auto-revocation-data-dictionary.pdf), [Pub 78 dictionary](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/pub-78-data-dictionary.pdf). An EIN not found in any file is still returned, with all `found` flags false.

### Notes

- The IRS updates these files about monthly. A result reflects the files the IRS was serving at run time.
- Business data only: personal fields are left out (the BMF "in care of" name, and the 990-N e-Postcard file with officers' names and addresses).
- This is not legal or tax advice, and it is not an official IRS determination. For an authoritative answer, use the IRS [Tax Exempt Organization Search](https://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/).

### Pricing

Pay per result: you are charged once per organization returned. Set `maxResults` or a spending limit to cap a run.
