## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## US Census Geocoder API: Address to Lat/Long, County & FIPS

Bulk-geocode US addresses to latitude/longitude plus county, census tract, block, FIPS/GEOID and congressional district with the official U.S. Census Geocoder. Free data. $1.80 per 1,000.

### What does it do?

**US Census Geocoder** bulk-geocodes US addresses with the official **U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder**: latitude/longitude, matched address, plus county, census tract, block group and block, FIPS/GEOID codes and congressional district.

- ✅ Official public data source: no login, no cookies, no proxies
- ✅ Fast: plain API calls, typical runs finish in seconds
- ✅ Clean, flat JSON / CSV / Excel output, ready for Sheets, BI tools or AI agents
- ✅ Pay only for results: no monthly rental

### Use cases

- **Real estate & insurance:** attach tract/FIPS for risk and demographics.
- **Public health & research:** join addresses to census data.
- **CRM cleanup:** standardize addresses.

### How to use it

1. Click **Try for free**. The input is prefilled with a working example.
2. Edit the input (see examples below) and click **Start**.
3. Download results as JSON, CSV, Excel or HTML, or pull them via API.

### Input examples

**Two addresses**

```json
{
  "addresses": [
    "1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500",
    "200 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203"
  ]
}
```

### Output

Sample rows:

| input | matched | matchCount |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 95014 | False | 0 |
| 1 Main St, Nowhere, XX | False | 0 |
| 400 Broad St, Seattle, WA 98109 | True | 1 |

Sample JSON record (long fields shortened):

```json
{
  "input": "1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 95014",
  "inputType": "address",
  "source": "U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder",
  "benchmark": "Public_AR_Current",
  "vintage": "Current_Current",
  "matched": false,
  "matchCount": 0
}
```

### Pricing

Pay per event: **$0.0018 per address geocoded** ($1.80 per 1,000). No start fee, no monthly rental. Rows for not-found inputs and errors are free.

| Results | Cost |
|---|---|
| 100 address geocodeds | $0.18 |
| 1,000 address geocodeds | $1.80 |
| 10,000 address geocodeds | $18.00 |

Apify's free plan includes monthly platform credit, so you can try it at no cost.

### Integrations

- **Google Sheets:** use Apify's Google Sheets integration, or import the dataset CSV link with `=IMPORTDATA()`.
- **Zapier & Make:** trigger runs and receive the dataset via the official Apify apps.
- **Webhooks & schedules:** run daily or hourly and post results anywhere.
- **AI agents (MCP):** available to Claude, ChatGPT and other agents through the Apify MCP server.
- **API & SDKs:** call from Python, JavaScript or any HTTP client:

```bash
curl -X POST 'https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/clearpathdata~census-geocoder-fips/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"addresses": ["1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500", "200 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203"]}'
```

### FAQ

**Non-US addresses?**

No. US addresses only.

**Data source?**

U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder (public).

**Something not working?**

Open an issue on the Actor's Issues tab, and it will be fixed quickly.

### More details

Bulk-geocode US addresses to latitude/longitude plus county, census tract, block, FIPS/GEOID and congressional district with the official U.S. Census Geocoder.

Geocode US addresses in bulk with the **official U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder** and get, for each address, **latitude/longitude**, the standardized matched address, and the full Census geography: **state and county FIPS, census tract, block group, block GEOID, place, county subdivision, congressional district, state legislative districts, urban/rural flag, CSA and urban area**. You can also reverse-geocode `lat,long` pairs to FIPS codes.

**Uses:** attach county/tract FIPS to customer or property lists, CRA/HMDA and fair-lending tract lookups, insurance and risk rating, joining to Census ACS/CBP demographics, sales territory mapping, political district lookups, cleaning CRM addresses.

**Why this one:** no Google/Mapbox key and no OpenStreetMap usage-policy limits. The data is public U.S. government data, and Census geography comes in the same call instead of a second lookup.

##### Output fields

input, matched, matchedAddress, latitude, longitude, zip, city, state, tigerLineId, side, stateFips, stateName, countyFips (5-digit GEOID), countyName, tractGeoid, tractName, blockGroupGeoid, blockGeoid, urbanRural, placeGeoid, placeName, countySubdivision, congressionalDistrictGeoid, congressionalDistrict, stateUpperDistrict, stateLowerDistrict, csaName, urbanAreaName, benchmark, vintage.

##### Notes

Coverage is US addresses only (the 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico); the matcher interpolates along Census TIGER address ranges, so it does not return rooftop points. Unmatched addresses come back as `matched: false` and are free. Source: geocoding.geo.census.gov (public U.S. Census Bureau service). Not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

##### Pricing

Pay per event: **address-geocoded** at $0.0018 ($1.8 per 1,000). Charged per address or coordinate successfully matched to Census geography. You pay only for results; not-found and error rows are free. Apify platform usage is included.

##### Example input

```json
{
  "addresses": [
    "1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500",
    "200 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203",
    "123 Nowhere Lane, Faketown, ZZ 00000"
  ],
  "coordinates": [
    "39.7392,-104.9903",
    "0,0"
  ]
}
```

# Actor input Schema

## `addresses` (type: `array`):

One-line US addresses, e.g. "1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500". Street + city/state or ZIP gives the best match rate.

## `coordinates` (type: `array`):

"latitude,longitude" pairs to turn into state/county/tract/block FIPS, e.g. "39.7392,-104.9903".

## `benchmark` (type: `string`):

Census address-range benchmark. Public_AR_Current is the latest.

## `vintage` (type: `string`):

Geography vintage, e.g. Current_Current, Census2020_Current, ACS2025_Current. Must match the benchmark (see Census docs).

## `concurrency` (type: `integer`):

Simultaneous requests to the Census API. Keep it modest to be polite.
