## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Google & YouTube Autocomplete Keyword Tool

Get real keyword ideas from **Google, YouTube, Google Shopping, Google News and Google Images autocomplete**. Bulk seeds, any country and language, A–Z / 0–9 / question / preposition / comparison / custom expansions, recursive depth, deduplication and filters. Pay only for unique keywords: **$0.06 per 1,000 keywords**.

### What it does

Autocomplete shows what people actually type. This Actor sends each seed (and each expansion of it) to Google's public suggestion service and returns every suggestion as a row. It records where the suggestion came from, its position and relevance, and how it was found.

- **5 sources:** Google web, YouTube, Google Shopping, Google News, Google Images.
- **Expansions:**
  - A–Z, as a suffix, a prefix or both.
  - 0–9.
  - Questions (who, what, how, can, is…).
  - Prepositions (for, with, near, vs…).
  - Comparisons (vs, alternative…).
  - Your own modifiers. Use `{seed}` as a placeholder, e.g. `best {seed} 2026`.
- **Recursive depth (0–3):** feed the suggestions back in as new seeds to go long-tail.
- **Multi-locale:** every language × country combination, e.g. en-US, en-AU, de-DE.
- **Clean output:**
  - Deduplication per locale and source, per source, globally, or none.
  - Exclude words; keep only keywords that contain the seed; cap the results.
  - Stray YouTube video IDs are filtered out.
- **Rich fields:** Google relevance score and suggestion type (query / entity / navigation), word and character counts, question flag, depth and parent keyword.
- **Reliable:**
  - Automatic retries with backoff and proxy-session rotation.
  - Optional switch to residential proxy after repeated blocks.
  - Bad input fails fast with a clear message, so you are never charged for garbage.

### Use cases

- SEO keyword research and content briefs. Question expansion gives you FAQ and People-Also-Ask style topics.
- YouTube title, tag and video-idea research.
- Amazon/Shopping-style product keyword discovery (Google Shopping source).
- Local SEO, e.g. `plumber wollongong` + A–Z for the AU market.
- PPC negative-keyword and long-tail discovery.
- Trend monitoring: schedule it daily and diff the results.

### Input example

```json
{
  "keywords": ["plumber wollongong", "solar panels"],
  "sources": ["google", "youtube"],
  "languages": ["en"],
  "countries": ["au"],
  "alphabetExpansion": true,
  "questionExpansion": true,
  "numberExpansion": true,
  "maxDepth": 0,
  "dedupeScope": "perLocaleAndSource"
}
```

### Output example

```json
{
  "keyword": "plumber wollombi",
  "seed": "plumber wollongong",
  "query": "plumber wollongong b",
  "source": "google",
  "language": "en",
  "country": "au",
  "position": 7,
  "relevance": 550,
  "suggestionType": "query",
  "expansionType": "alphabet-suffix",
  "depth": 0,
  "parentKeyword": null,
  "wordCount": 2,
  "characterCount": 16,
  "isQuestion": false,
  "scrapedAt": "2026-10-17T12:42:29+00:00"
}
```

`relevance` and `suggestionType` are available for the Google web source only; other sources return them as null. Download as JSON, CSV, Excel or HTML, or use the API.

### Pricing (pay per event)

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Keyword (one unique keyword in your dataset) | $0.00006 ($0.06 per 1,000) |
| Actor start | $0.00005 per GB of memory (set by Apify) |

There are no per-query or per-run fees. A typical autocomplete request returns 7–10 keywords, so 1,000 requests cost about $0.45–0.60. The run stops cleanly at your **maximum cost per run**.

### FAQ

**How many keywords will I get?** About 8 per request in our tests. One seed with A–Z expansion is 27 requests, so roughly 150–250 unique keywords. Depth 1 multiplies that again.

**Do I need a proxy?** Usually not. In our tests, 5,600+ requests in one run from a single datacenter IP all succeeded. A proxy and residential fallback are available for very large or repeated runs.

**Why does a suggestion not contain my seed?** Google sometimes corrects or broadens the query. Turn on *Only keywords containing the seed* to drop these.

**Is search volume included?** No. Autocomplete does not expose volumes. Use the output as input for a volume tool.

**Which language/country codes?** ISO 639-1 language codes (en, de, fr) and 2-letter ISO country codes (us, au, gb). Invalid codes stop the run before anything is charged.

### Daily health check

The default/prefill input (`coffee machine`, Google + YouTube) finishes in about 5 seconds with 20+ keywords. The same input is in `test_inputs/00_selftest.json`.

### Legal and fair-use notes

- The Actor reads Google's public autocomplete suggestions. These contain no personal data.
- `suggestqueries.google.com` publishes no robots.txt. However, Google's Terms of Service restrict automated access to its services.
- You are responsible for using the data lawfully and in line with the terms that apply to you. Keep request rates reasonable.
- This Actor is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google or YouTube.

# Actor input Schema

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

One or more seed keywords. Each seed is expanded with the options below.

## `sources` (type: `array`):

Which autocomplete to query. Google = web search box, YouTube = YouTube search box, plus Google Shopping, News and Images.

## `languages` (type: `array`):

Interface language codes, e.g. en, de, es, pt-br. Each language x country is a separate locale.

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Two-letter country codes, e.g. us, gb, au, de.

## `alphabetExpansion` (type: `boolean`):

Also query 'seed a' … 'seed z' (26 extra queries per seed and locale). The classic long-tail trick.

## `alphabetPosition` (type: `string`):

Put letters after the seed (suffix), before it (prefix) or both.

## `numberExpansion` (type: `boolean`):

Also query 'seed 0' … 'seed 9' (good for years, models, sizes).

## `questionExpansion` (type: `boolean`):

Also query who/what/when/where/why/how/which/can/is/are/does/should/will + seed. Great for FAQ and blog ideas.

## `prepositionExpansion` (type: `boolean`):

Also query seed + for/with/without/near/vs/to/like/versus/and/or.

## `comparisonExpansion` (type: `boolean`):

Also query seed + vs/versus/or/and/like/alternative/alternatives (competitor research).

## `customModifiers` (type: `array`):

Extra words appended to each seed, or full templates using {seed}, e.g. 'best {seed} for', 'cheap'.

## `maxDepth` (type: `integer`):

0 = only the queries above. 1 = also expand every new suggestion once. Each level multiplies queries (~10x).

## `maxSuggestionsPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

Keep at most this many suggestions from each autocomplete answer (Google returns up to ~15).

## `dedupeScope` (type: `string`):

How duplicates are removed. Default keeps one row per keyword per source and locale.

## `onlyContainingSeed` (type: `boolean`):

Drop suggestions that don't contain every word of the seed.

## `excludeWords` (type: `array`):

Drop suggestions containing any of these words or phrases (e.g. brand names, 'free').

## `includeSeedAsResult` (type: `boolean`):

Keep a suggestion that is identical to the seed.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Stop after this many unique keywords. Also caps cost.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Google's suggest endpoint usually works without a proxy. For very large runs use Apify Proxy; RESIDENTIAL is the most robust.

## `residentialFallback` (type: `boolean`):

After 3 consecutive blocks, switch the rest of the run to the RESIDENTIAL proxy group (Apify platform only).

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

Parallel requests. Lower it if you see rate limiting.

## `maxRetries` (type: `integer`):

Retries with exponential backoff and a fresh proxy session.
