## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

## US Federal Register Rules & Notices Tracker

Search and monitor **US Federal Register documents** — final rules, proposed
rules, notices, and presidential documents — direct from the official
[federalregister.gov](https://www.federalregister.gov) API. No API key required.

![US Government](https://img.logo.dev/federalregister.gov?token=pk_f3e1270e3c2e4cb5a0c3a8d86e96b90a\&size=200\&retina=true\&format=png)

### What it does

The Federal Register is the official daily journal of the US government,
publishing new and amended federal regulations. This actor queries its public
API and returns structured metadata for matching documents — the daily feed that
compliance teams, lobbyists, lawyers, and policy analysts track.

### Example Inputs

#### Track recent rules on data privacy

```json
{
  "searchTerm": "data privacy",
  "documentType": "all",
  "agency": "",
  "startDate": "",
  "endDate": "",
  "maxDocuments": 20
}
```

#### Monitor a specific agency's proposed rules

```json
{
  "searchTerm": "",
  "documentType": "PRORULE",
  "agency": "epa",
  "startDate": "2024-01-01",
  "endDate": "2024-06-30",
  "maxDocuments": 50
}
```

#### Watch for new SEC final rules

```json
{
  "searchTerm": "",
  "documentType": "RULE",
  "agency": "sec",
  "startDate": "",
  "endDate": "",
  "maxDocuments": 100
}
```

### Output

Each document record includes:

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `document_number` | Unique FR document number (e.g. 2024-12345) |
| `title` | Document title |
| `type` | Rule / Proposed Rule / Notice / Presidential Document |
| `publication_date` | Date published in the Federal Register |
| `agencies` | Issuing agency/agencies |
| `abstract` | Document summary |
| `html_url` | Link to full text on federalregister.gov |
| `pdf_url` | Link to printable PDF |
| `regulation_id_number` | RIN (for rules in the unified agenda) |
| `effective_date` | When a rule takes effect |
| `comment_due_date` | Public comment deadline (proposed rules) |

### Data Source

[Federal Register API](https://www.federalregister.gov/developers/documentation/api/v1)
— official US government public API. Data is public domain (17 USC §105) and
published daily at federalregister.gov.

### Use Cases

- **Regulatory compliance**: track rules that affect your industry
- **Legal / policy teams**: monitor agency rulemaking
- **Public comments**: find proposed rules with open comment periods
- **Lobbying / advocacy**: watch the daily federal register for relevant actions
- **News & journalism**: identify newsworthy federal actions

### Limitations

- The API caps full-text search `count` at 10,000 documents per query
- `agency` accepts agency slugs (e.g. `nrc`, `epa`, `sec`, `fda`)
- Some rules have no RIN (`regulation_id_number` empty) or effective date

# Actor input Schema
