## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Totaljobs UK Vacancy Finder by Keyword, Area & Pay

Totaljobs is one of the UK's largest job boards, listing vacancies across every industry and region. This actor pulls live job postings from Totaljobs by keyword, by browsing a specific city or region, or by a salary band, and returns structured listing data you can filter, sort, or load straight into a spreadsheet.

### What this actor does

- Searches Totaljobs by job title or keyword combined with a UK city or region.
- Browses every current listing in a chosen location without needing a keyword.
- Filters results to a minimum and/or maximum annual salary in GBP.
- Narrows results further by employment type (permanent, contract, temporary, and more).
- Paginates automatically through search results until it reaches your requested item count.
- Fields Totaljobs doesn't show for a given listing are left out of that record rather than returned blank.

### Output per job

- `jobId` — Totaljobs' internal identifier for the listing
- `title` — job title as posted
- `company` — employer name
- `location` — job location as shown on the listing
- `salary` — salary or salary range as published (e.g. `£45,000 - £55,000`)
- `jobType` — employment type shown on the listing
- `description` — job description text available from the listing
- `postedDate` — date the vacancy was posted
- `applicationUrl` — link to apply for the role
- `jobUrl` — direct link to the Totaljobs listing
- `recordType` — always `job`
- `scrapedAt` — ISO 8601 timestamp of when the record was collected

### Input

| Field | Type | Default | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `mode` | String (select) | `searchJobs` | `searchJobs` (keyword + location search), `searchByLocation` (browse every listing in a location, ignoring keyword/salary/job type), or `searchBySalary` (keyword + location search filtered by salary — behaves the same as `searchJobs` with a salary range set). |
| `keyword` | String | `software developer` | Job title or keyword. Used by `searchJobs` and `searchBySalary`; ignored by `searchByLocation`. |
| `location` | String | `London` | UK city or region, e.g. London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh. |
| `salaryMin` | Integer | – | Minimum annual salary in GBP. |
| `salaryMax` | Integer | – | Maximum annual salary in GBP. |
| `jobType` | String (select) | – | One of `permanent`, `contract`, `temporary`, `part-time`, `full-time`, `internship`, `apprenticeship`. |
| `maxItems` | Integer | 20 | Maximum number of job listings to return (1-500). |

#### Example: keyword search in a city

```json
{
  "mode": "searchJobs",
  "keyword": "software developer",
  "location": "London",
  "maxItems": 50
}
```

#### Example: browse everything open in a region

```json
{
  "mode": "searchByLocation",
  "location": "Manchester",
  "maxItems": 100
}
```

#### Example: salary-banded search with job type

```json
{
  "mode": "searchBySalary",
  "keyword": "project manager",
  "location": "Birmingham",
  "salaryMin": 40000,
  "salaryMax": 60000,
  "jobType": "permanent",
  "maxItems": 50
}
```

### Use cases

- **Job seekers** — pull every current vacancy matching a title and city into one list to review outside the Totaljobs site.
- **Salary benchmarking** — compare published salary ranges for a role across UK regions.
- **Recruitment agencies** — monitor which employers are actively hiring for specific roles and locations.
- **Local labour market research** — browse a whole city's open vacancies with `searchByLocation` to gauge hiring activity by sector.
- **Compensation analysts** — use `salaryMin`/`salaryMax` to pull only roles inside a target pay band.

### FAQ

**What's the difference between `searchJobs` and `searchBySalary`?**
They run the same keyword-and-location search; `searchBySalary` is just a clearer name to use when your main filter is `salaryMin`/`salaryMax`. Either mode applies salary filters the same way.

**Does `searchByLocation` use the `keyword` field?**
No — it browses every listing posted in the given location and ignores `keyword`, `salaryMin`/`salaryMax`, and `jobType`.

**Why is `salary` sometimes missing from a record?**
Not every employer publishes a salary on Totaljobs. When a listing doesn't show one, the `salary` field is left off that record.

**Why is `description` sometimes short?**
The description comes from what's shown on the listing itself; some employers post brief summaries while others include full role details.

**How many jobs can one run return?**
Up to 500 per run, set with `maxItems`. The actor pages through search results automatically until it reaches that number or runs out of listings.

**Is salary filtering exact?**
`salaryMin` and `salaryMax` are passed to Totaljobs' own search filters, so results reflect how Totaljobs itself matches salary ranges to listings.

**Is this affiliated with Totaljobs?**
No. This actor reads publicly available Totaljobs listing pages and has no affiliation with Totaljobs or the StepStone Group.
