## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## SEC EDGAR Scraper — 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K filings & XBRL financials

Get US public company filings and key financial metrics straight from the **official SEC EDGAR APIs**. Enter **tickers** (AAPL, MSFT, BRK.B) or **CIK numbers** and get clean, structured data: every filing with form type, dates, accession number and direct document links, plus tidy annual and quarterly financials (revenue, net income, EPS, assets and more) ready for spreadsheets, BI tools or models.

No API key, no proxy, no HTML scraping. The Actor calls SEC's JSON endpoints and respects SEC's fair-access rules (identified User-Agent, max ~8 requests/second).

### What you get

| Item `type` | Source | Content |
|---|---|---|
| `filing` | `data.sec.gov/submissions` | Company name, ticker, CIK, form, filing date, report date, accession number, primary document URL, filing index URL, 8-K items |
| `financial` | `data.sec.gov/api/xbrl/companyfacts` | One row per metric and period: value, unit, fiscal year, fiscal period, form, filed date, period start/end, XBRL tag |

Financial metrics: `Revenues`, `NetIncomeLoss`, `OperatingIncomeLoss`, `Assets`, `Liabilities`, `StockholdersEquity`, `CashAndCashEquivalents`, `EarningsPerShareBasic`, `EarningsPerShareDiluted`.
Revenue falls back across common tags (`Revenues` → `RevenueFromContractWithCustomerExcludingAssessedTax` → `SalesRevenueNet`), so you get one consistent revenue series even when a company changed tags over the years. The `tag` field tells you which one was used.

### Use cases

- **Equity research & screening** — pull revenue, earnings and EPS history for a list of tickers into Excel or Google Sheets
- **Filing alerts** — run daily with Apify Schedules and get every new 8-K, 10-Q or Form 4 for your watchlist
- **Insider trading monitoring** — collect Form 4 filings with direct links to the documents
- **Quant & ML datasets** — tidy, deduplicated fundamentals with period dates, ready for pandas
- **Compliance & due diligence** — full filing history of a company with links to every document
- **IPO tracking** — find S-1 and 424B filings by date range

### Input

| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `tickers` | array | Tickers (`AAPL`, `BRK.B`) or CIKs (`320193`, `0000320193`). Default `["AAPL"]` |
| `formTypes` | array | Form types to keep, e.g. `10-K`, `10-Q`, `8-K`, `4`, `S-1`. Empty = all. Amendments are separate (`10-K/A`) |
| `dateFrom` | string | `YYYY-MM-DD`. Filings filed on/after; financial periods ending on/after |
| `dateTo` | string | `YYYY-MM-DD`. Filings filed on/before; financial periods ending on/before |
| `maxFilingsPerCompany` | integer | Newest-first limit per company (default 20). `0` = financials only |
| `includeFinancials` | boolean | Add XBRL financial rows (default `true`) |
| `contactEmail` | string | Your email for the SEC User-Agent header (optional; SEC asks automated clients to identify themselves) |

Export as JSON, CSV, Excel or via API. The dataset has two views: **Filings** and **Financials**.

### How financials are cleaned

XBRL company facts repeat each value in every later filing as a comparative figure. This Actor keeps **one row per metric and period**, taken from the original report (earliest filing), and only keeps full-year (`FY`) and single-quarter (`Q1`-`Q4`) periods. Six- and nine-month year-to-date values are dropped. Balance-sheet metrics (assets, liabilities, equity, cash) are point-in-time, so `periodStart` is `null`.

### Tips & limitations

- Fiscal Q4 rows only appear when the company reports a separate fourth-quarter value; most report only the full year in the 10-K (Q4 = FY − Q1 − Q2 − Q3).
- Some companies use other XBRL tags for a metric (e.g. banks, insurers, or EPS per Class A share), so a metric can be missing for them.
- Only us-gaap facts are included; foreign filers reporting under IFRS (20-F) may have few or no financial rows.
- `fiscalYear`/`fiscalPeriod` are as reported in the SEC data for that filing.
- Combine with **Schedules** and **Webhooks** for automatic filing alerts.

### Data source & legal

All data is **public information published by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission** through its official EDGAR APIs (`sec.gov`, `data.sec.gov`). This Actor is not affiliated with or endorsed by the SEC. It follows SEC's [fair access guidelines](https://www.sec.gov/os/accessing-edgar-data). Financial data is provided as filed by the companies and is not investment advice.
