# Email Security Grader - SPF, DMARC, DKIM, MTA-STS (Bulk) (`dennydevelops/email-security-grader`) Actor

Grade any domain A-F on email security: SPF, DMARC, DKIM, MTA-STS, TLS-RPT and BIMI, with a spoofable flag and the exact fixes. Bulk and cheap: leads for MSPs and security teams.

## Pricing

Pay per event + usage

This Actor is paid per event and usage. You are charged both the fixed price for specific events and for Apify platform usage.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Email Security Grader – SPF, DMARC, DKIM, MTA-STS (Bulk)

Grade any domain **A–F** on email security from its public DNS, in bulk. Each result says whether the domain is **spoofable** (anyone can send email as it), lists every issue, and gives the exact fix. MSPs, security consultants and email deliverability agencies use it to find prospects and to report on clients.

### Checks

| Check | What's graded |
|---|---|
| SPF | Present, only one record, ends in `-all`/`~all` (not `+all`/`?all`), within the 10-DNS-lookup limit (includes followed) |
| DMARC | Present, policy `none` / `quarantine` / `reject`, `pct`, reports (`rua`) |
| DKIM | Keys on 27 common selectors (Google, Microsoft, SendGrid, Mailchimp, Zendesk, HubSpot…). Wildcard DNS is detected so results aren't faked |
| MTA-STS | Record plus the live policy file (`mode: enforce`) |
| TLS-RPT, BIMI | Present |

Domains that send no email (null MX, `v=spf1 -all`) are graded on lock-down, not on DKIM.

### Input

| Field | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| `domains` | – | Domains, URLs or email addresses |
| `onlyGradesAtOrBelow` | – | Lead mode: e.g. `C` outputs only C, D and F |
| `onlySpoofable` | false | Only domains anyone can spoof |
| `maxDomains` | 10000 | Cap per run |

### Output

```json
{
  "domain": "weak.com", "grade": "F", "score": 30, "spoofable": true,
  "issues": ["Multiple SPF records (invalid)", "SPF allows everyone (+all)", "No DMARC record", "…"],
  "fixes": ["Merge the SPF records into one…", "End the SPF record with -all…", "Publish \"v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@weak.com\" at _dmarc.weak.com…"],
  "spf": {"record": "v=spf1 +all", "count": 2, "all": "+all", "lookups": 0},
  "dmarc": {"record": null, "policy": null, "pct": null, "reports": false},
  "dkim": {"selectorsFound": [], "selectorsChecked": 27, "wildcardDns": false},
  "mtaSts": {"record": false, "mode": null}, "tlsRpt": false, "bimi": false, "hasMx": true, "mx": ["mx.weak.com"]
}
```

### Pricing (pay per event)

$0.001 per run and **$0.0015 per domain**: 1,000 domains for $1.50.

DNS-over-HTTPS lookups (Cloudflare, Google fallback). No email is sent, and the mail servers are never contacted.

# Actor input Schema

## `domains` (type: `array`):

Domains, website URLs or email addresses (the domain is used).

## `onlyGradesAtOrBelow` (type: `string`):

For lead lists: e.g. C outputs only C, D and F domains. Every domain checked is still billed.

## `onlySpoofable` (type: `boolean`):

Only output domains where anyone can send email as them (no enforced DMARC).

## `maxDomains` (type: `integer`):

Caps work and cost per run.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "domains": [
    "apify.com",
    "example.com",
    "github.com"
  ],
  "onlySpoofable": false,
  "maxDomains": 10000
}
```

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("dennydevelops/email-security-grader").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
