## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

## SEC Company Tickers — CIK and Name Lookup

Resolve SEC CIK numbers from tickers and company names across all
SEC-registered issuers (10 400+). Filter by exact ticker, partial name,
or exchange. Returns `cik`, `ticker`, `name`, `cik_padded`. Built for
**research analysts**, **compliance teams**, and **AI agents** that
need to anchor a query to a specific issuer.

### Free trial

A free Apify account gives you about **5 USD of monthly credits**, more
than enough to resolve hundreds of tickers or company names before
paying.

### Use cases

1. **Portfolio ticker → CIK join** — given a list of 200 tickers, look
   up each CIK and join to the SEC XBRL frames Actor for one
   financial-facts table.
2. **Issuer due diligence** — search by partial name (e.g.
   `"NVIDIA"`) and check all matches before doing an SEC EDGAR
   full-text search on the chosen `cik`.
3. **Bulk enrichment** — for every holding in a CSV, fetch the padded
   10-digit CIK to use in other Actors (e.g.
   `cfpb-consumer-complaints-api`).

### Input

```json
{
  "ticker": "NVDA",
  "name_contains": "",
  "exchange": "",
  "max_results": 5
}
```

| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| `ticker` | string | `""` | Exact ticker (e.g. `AAPL`). Case-insensitive. |
| `name_contains` | string | `""` | Partial name match (case-insensitive substring). |
| `exchange` | string | `""` | Exchange code (e.g. `Nasdaq`, `NYSE`). Empty = all. |
| `max_results` | integer | `20` | Cap on returned records (1–200). |

### Output (real run)

```json
[
  {
    "cik": 1045810,
    "cik_padded": "0001045810",
    "ticker": "NVDA",
    "name": "NVIDIA CORP",
    "name_upper": "NVIDIA CORP",
    "ticker_match_type": "exact",
    "name_match_type": "none",
    "fetched_at": "2026-10-07T14:52:15.046505Z"
  }
]
```

| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `cik` | integer | SEC CIK as a number (no leading zeros). |
| `cik_padded` | string | 10-digit zero-padded CIK (use for SEC URLs). |
| `ticker` | string | Primary ticker. |
| `name` | string | Issuer name (uppercase, as registered). |
| `name_upper` | string | Uppercase issuer name (helper). |
| `ticker_match_type` | string | `exact` | `prefix` | `none`. |
| `name_match_type` | string | `exact` | `prefix` | `substring` | `none`. |
| `fetched_at` | string | ISO timestamp of when this record was fetched. |

### Pricing (pay-per-event)

- **No subscription.** Free monthly credits apply first.
- **1 result = $0.001 USD** (about $1 per 1 000 results).
- Charged per item returned in the dataset; failed runs are not charged.

### Source, licence, limits

- Source: SEC EDGAR company tickers file (`company_tickers.json`).
- Licence: US Government work, public domain (17 U.S.C. § 105).
- Update frequency: SEC publishes a fresh tickers file weekly; this
  Actor caches the latest version.
- Limits: SEC issuers only. OTC and Pink-sheet tickers not covered by
  EDGAR will not be found here.

### FAQ

**What's a CIK?**
Central Index Key — the unique numeric identifier the SEC assigns each
filer. Use `cik_padded` (10 digits with leading zeros) when building
SEC URLs.

**Why does `name` look uppercase?**
The SEC tickers file uses uppercase issuer names. Convert with
`.title()` if you need display formatting.

**Can I look up multiple tickers in one run?**
Pass a comma-separated string in `ticker` (e.g. `"AAPL,MSFT,NVDA"`).
The Actor splits and deduplicates.

**How do I search by partial ticker like "AA"?**
Leave `ticker` empty and use `name_contains="AA"`, or use the prefix
match by leaving a trailing substring.

**Is the tickers list real-time?**
No — it's the SEC-published file, refreshed weekly by our cache. For
the latest, hit the SEC endpoint directly.

**What about ETFs and funds?**
Yes — ETFs, funds, and registered investment advisers are in the SEC
EDGAR tickers file and are returned by this Actor.
