## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

### What does URL Metadata Extractor do?

**URL Metadata & Link Preview Extractor** reads any list of URLs and returns everything you need to build a **link preview** or audit a page's **SEO metadata**: title, description, preview image, site name, favicon, canonical URL, language, RSS/Atom feeds, all **Open Graph** and **Twitter Card** tags, and **JSON-LD / schema.org** structured data.

Use it as a bulk **Open Graph checker**, **meta tag extractor**, **link preview API** or **schema.org / JSON-LD scraper** for thousands of URLs.

### Why use it?

- ⚡ **Fast bulk lookups** – plain HTTP, 10–20 URLs in parallel, no browser.
- 🖼️ **Ready-made link previews** – `title`, `description`, `image` and `favicons` with smart fallbacks (Open Graph → Twitter Card → HTML tags), and image URLs made absolute.
- 🔎 **SEO audit data** – canonical URL, robots meta, keywords, theme color, language and schema.org types in one row.
- 📰 **Feed discovery** – finds RSS and Atom feed links.
- 💸 **Pay per URL** – only successfully fetched URLs are charged. Errors are free.
- 🤖 **Great for AI agents** – lets an agent "peek" at a link cheaply before deciding to read the whole page.

### How to use it

1. Paste URLs into **URLs** (one per line, or upload a file).
2. Click **Start**.
3. Download results as JSON, CSV or Excel, or fetch them through the API.

#### Input example

```json
{
  "startUrls": [{ "url": "https://github.com/apify/crawlee" }],
  "includeJsonLd": true
}
```

#### Output example

```json
{
  "url": "https://github.com/apify/crawlee",
  "statusCode": 200,
  "title": "GitHub - apify/crawlee: Crawlee—A web scraping and browser automation library",
  "description": "Crawlee—A web scraping and browser automation library for Node.js ...",
  "image": "https://opengraph.githubassets.com/.../apify/crawlee",
  "siteName": "GitHub",
  "type": "object",
  "language": "en",
  "canonicalUrl": "https://github.com/apify/crawlee",
  "favicons": [{ "rel": "icon", "href": "https://github.githubassets.com/favicons/favicon.svg", "sizes": null }],
  "feeds": [],
  "openGraph": { "title": "...", "image": "...", "site_name": "GitHub" },
  "twitterCard": { "card": "summary_large_image", "site": "@github" },
  "jsonLdTypes": [],
  "error": null
}
```

### How much does it cost?

This Actor uses **pay-per-event (PPE)** pricing: you pay only for results, and the Apify platform compute it uses is already included.

| Event | Price | Per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| URL processed | **$0.001** per URL | **$1.00** per 1,000 URLs |
| Actor start | $0.0005 per run | – |

URLs that fail to load are **not charged**. For example, 1,000 URLs cost about **$1.00**. The Actor start fee is charged once per run (one event per GB of memory; the default memory setting counts as one). You can set a **maximum cost per run** in the run options and the Actor stops cleanly when it is reached. Apify's free plan includes $5 of monthly credit, enough to try it at no cost.

### Use cases

- Link unfurling / previews in chat apps, CMSs and newsletters
- SEO and social-sharing audits (missing `og:image`, wrong canonical, missing description)
- Enriching URL lists for lead research, bookmarking and content curation
- Giving AI agents a cheap summary of a link

### FAQ

**How many URLs can I check?** Thousands per run; URLs are fetched in parallel and you pay only for successful ones.

**Can I use it from an AI agent or no-code tool?** Yes – via the Apify API, the Apify MCP server, Make, Zapier or n8n.

### Limitations

Only public pages are supported. Metadata injected by JavaScript after page load is not visible to plain HTTP requests (most sites render it server-side for social crawlers, so this is rarely an issue).
