## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Bulk WHOIS & DNS Lookup - Domain Expiry, RDAP, SPF, DMARC

Check thousands of domains in one run: **registrar, creation and expiry dates, days to expiry, status codes, nameservers, DNSSEC**, plus live **DNS (A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, CAA)** and **email security (SPF, DMARC policy)**, with an **availability hint** for unregistered names.

- **Official data source.** Registration data comes from **RDAP**, the protocol ICANN made the definitive source for gTLD registration data on 28 January 2025 (replacing WHOIS). Servers are found through the official IANA bootstrap registry. No scraping of WHOIS web pages, no port-43 text parsing.
- **No personal data.** We read only the registrar's name and IANA ID. Registrant, admin and tech contacts are never read or stored.
- **$0.001 per domain**, with no start fee. Invalid domains and lookups that return nothing are **free**. You can set a maximum cost per run and we never go above it.

### Quick start: example input, output and cost

Check domain expiry dates, registrar, nameservers, MX, SPF and DMARC for thousands of domains via official RDAP. No personal data, failed lookups free.

**Example input**

```json
{
  "domains": [
    "apify.com",
    "wikipedia.org",
    "sidn.nl"
  ]
}
```

**Cost example:** 1,000 domains x $0.001 = **$1.00**.

### Input

| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| `domains` | Domains, URLs or email addresses (the domain part is used). Up to 10,000 per run; duplicates are checked once. IDNs like `bücher.de` are supported. |
| `domainsText` | Paste a list separated by new lines, commas or spaces. |
| `checks` | `rdap`, `dns` or both (same price). |
| `expiringWithinDays` | Flags domains expiring within this many days (default 30). |

### Output (one item per domain)

`domain, registered, availabilityHint (taken / likely-available / unknown), registrar, registrarIanaId, createdAt, updatedAt, expiresAt, daysToExpiry, expiringSoon, status[], nameservers[], dnssec, dns.records{A,AAAA,MX,NS,TXT,CAA}, dns.emailSecurity{hasMx, spf, spfValid, dmarc, dmarcPolicy}, warnings[]`

The **ERRORS** record lists every domain that failed and why (never charged). The **SUMMARY** record has totals.

### Good to know (limits)

- Some country-code registries (for example `.de`) offer no public RDAP service. For those you get DNS data only, and the item says so in `rdapNote`.
- `availabilityHint` is a hint, not a guarantee: premium or reserved names can be unregistered and still not purchasable.
- We query each registry at most about once per second, so very large lists on a single TLD take a while. Registries are shared infrastructure, and this keeps the actor reliable.
- Expiry dates are as published by the registry. Some registries (for example `.nl`) do not publish an expiry date.

### Pricing

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Domain checked (RDAP and/or DNS data returned) | $0.001 |

Example: 10,000 domains cost $10. Typical alternatives charge $0.0025–0.004 per domain.

### Use cases

Domain portfolio expiry monitoring (schedule it weekly), lead-list hygiene (does the company domain resolve, does it have MX?), email deliverability audits (SPF/DMARC), brand-protection checks and availability brainstorming.
