## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

## Scholarly Papers Search (OpenAlex + Crossref + arXiv)

Search and **monitor academic papers** via three **official open APIs**:

- [OpenAlex](https://openalex.org) (CC0 scholarly graph)
- [Crossref REST](https://www.crossref.org/documentation/retrieve-metadata/rest-api/) (polite pool)
- [arXiv API](https://info.arxiv.org/help/api/) (descriptive metadata CC0)

Built for AI agents, literature reviews and research alerts that need clean bibliographic JSON — without scraping publisher HTML.

### What you get

One dataset item per paper (deduped by DOI / arXiv id):

- `title`, `authors` (names; optional `orcid` id), `year`, `doi`
- `abstract` (when the API provides it), `venue`
- `openAccessUrl` (OA landing or arXiv abs link), `source`, `ids`

Emails and phones are stripped if present. Author names are standard public bibliographic metadata.

### Input

| Field | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| `query` | - | Free-text search (required unless `doi`) |
| `doi` | - | Look up one DOI |
| `sources` | all three | `openalex`, `crossref`, `arxiv` |
| `maxResults` | 25 | Cap on charged papers |
| `onlyNew` + `monitorName` | false / default | Skip already-seen keys |
| `includeAbstract` | true | Include abstracts when available |

### Example input

```json
{
  "query": "transformer neural network",
  "sources": [
    "openalex"
  ],
  "maxResults": 3,
  "onlyNew": false
}
```

### Example output (one record, some fields shortened)

Real record from a test run on the input above (dates and values change over time).

```json
{
  "title": "Transformer neural networks for interpretable flood forecasting",
  "authors": [
    {
      "name": "Marco Castangia",
      "orcid": "0000-0002-2541-0378"
    },
    {
      "name": "Lina Maria Medina Grajales"
    }
  ],
  "year": 2022,
  "doi": "10.1016/j.envsoft.2022.105581",
  "abstract": null,
  "venue": "Environmental Modelling & Software",
  "openAccessUrl": "https://iris.polito.it/bitstream/11583/2973206/1/flood_forecasting_final.pdf",
  "source": "openalex",
  "ids": {
    "openalex": "W4309154825",
    "arxiv": "2022.10558"
  },
  "fetchedAt": "2026-10-18T05:38:56.881825+00:00",
  "matchedQuery": "transformer neural network"
}
```

### Limits

- Abstracts are only returned when the source API has them; Crossref often has none.
- Results from the three sources are de-duplicated by DOI or arXiv id. Records without either can appear twice with slightly different titles.
- arXiv is paced at one request every 3 seconds, so large arXiv searches are slow.
- No full-text PDFs, no citation counts and no Google Scholar data.

### Pricing

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Paper returned | **$0.0009** |

No start fee. Failures and already-seen papers are free. Set a maximum cost per run and the actor stops before it is reached.

### Compliance

- Official APIs only (no HTML scrape)
- Honest User-Agent with `[digivibetech.com/support](https://digivibetech.com/support/)`; OpenAlex/Crossref mailto query param; arXiv paced at ≤1 request / 3 seconds (ToU)
- Crossref polite pool; OpenAlex CC0; arXiv descriptive metadata CC0
- **Thank you to arXiv for use of its open access interoperability.**
- We never store or serve e-print PDF bytes — only metadata and links to arxiv.org
- No personal contact data: emails/phones redacted; ORCID kept as a public scholarly id

### Use it in n8n, Make or Zapier

Schedule a daily run with `onlyNew: true`, then webhook on new dataset items.

# Actor input Schema

## `query` (type: `string`):

Free-text search across titles/abstracts (OpenAlex search, Crossref query, arXiv all:). Required unless you set doi.

## `doi` (type: `string`):

Look up one work by DOI (10.xxxx/...). Combined with query when both are set (DOI lookup first per source).

## `sources` (type: `array`):

Subset of openalex, crossref, arxiv. Default = all three. Results are deduped by DOI/arXiv id.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Maximum papers to return after dedupe (each costs $0.0009). Keep small for canaries.

## `onlyNew` (type: `boolean`):

Return only papers not seen in earlier runs with the same monitor name. Ideal for a daily schedule + webhook.

## `monitorName` (type: `string`):

Separate only-new monitors by using different names (letters, digits, '-' ; max 40).

## `includeAbstract` (type: `boolean`):

When true, include abstracts when the API provides them (OpenAlex inverted index, Crossref, arXiv summary).

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "query": "transformer neural network",
  "sources": [
    "openalex",
    "crossref",
    "arxiv"
  ],
  "maxResults": 10,
  "onlyNew": false,
  "monitorName": "default",
  "includeAbstract": true
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

All result items (overview view)

## `errors` (type: `string`):

Inputs that could not be processed, with the reason

## `summary` (type: `string`):

Counts of processed, billed and failed items
