# Web Page to Markdown for AI & RAG (`dodge_bot/web-to-markdown`) Actor

Turn any web page into clean Markdown for LLMs, RAG and AI agents: main content only (no menus, ads or footers), absolute links and images, tables kept, title/author/date metadata, word and token counts, optional chunks. Respects robots.txt. Pay per page, errors free.

## Pricing

Pay per event

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Web Page to Markdown for AI & RAG

Turn any web page into clean Markdown that an LLM can use. You give it URLs; it returns the page's main content only (no menus, cookie banners, ads or footers), with a title, author, date, word count and token estimate. Optionally it splits each page into chunks ready for a vector database.

**$1 per 1,000 pages. Pages that fail, are blocked or are empty are not charged.**

### Good for

- Feeding documentation, articles or product pages into RAG pipelines and vector stores
- Giving an AI agent the readable text of a link mid-task
- Building training or evaluation sets from public pages
- Archiving articles as portable Markdown

### What you get for each page

| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| `markdown` | The page as Markdown. Headings, lists, tables (GitHub format), links and images kept; links and image URLs made absolute |
| `title`, `byline`, `siteName`, `lang`, `publishedTime`, `excerpt` | Page metadata when the page provides it |
| `wordCount`, `characters`, `approxTokens` | Size of the result (tokens estimated at 4 characters each) |
| `extraction` | `main_content` (article detected), `full_page_fallback` (short or unusual page, whole body used) or `full_page` |
| `chunks` | Only if you set a chunk size: pieces of about N tokens split on paragraph boundaries, each with its section heading |
| `links` | Only if you ask: every absolute link on the page |
| `status` | `ok`, or why a page was skipped: `http_error`, `unreachable`, `blocked_by_robots_txt`, `no_text`, `unsupported_content` |

#### Example (shortened)

```json
{
  "url": "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown",
  "status": "ok",
  "title": "Markdown",
  "lang": "en",
  "extraction": "main_content",
  "markdown": "# Markdown\n\nFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia\n\n..."
}
```

### Input

- **Page URLs**: up to 10,000 per run.
- **What to keep**: main content (recommended) or the whole page body.
- **Chunk size for RAG**: 0 for none, or a token size such as 500.
- **Maximum characters per page**: cut very long pages.
- **Include list of links** and **Respect robots.txt** (on by default).

### Limits, honestly

- Pages are fetched as HTML, without running JavaScript. Sites that only render content with JavaScript return little text; those come back as `no_text` and are not charged.
- It does not log in, solve CAPTCHAs or get around blocks. If a site refuses automated access, the page is skipped and free.
- PDFs and other files are not converted (they return `unsupported_content`, free).
- Respecting robots.txt is on by default. Only turn it off for sites you own or have permission to fetch.

### Use with AI agents

Every run is pay per page with no subscription, so agents can call it through the Apify API or MCP server and pay only for what they convert.

# Actor input Schema

## `urls` (type: `array`):

Pages to convert, one per line (up to 10,000 per run).

## `extractMode` (type: `string`):

Main content removes menus, footers, cookie banners and sidebars.

## `chunkTokens` (type: `integer`):

0 = no chunks. Otherwise also split the Markdown into chunks of about this many tokens on paragraph boundaries, each with its section heading.

## `maxCharacters` (type: `integer`):

0 = no limit.

## `includeLinks` (type: `boolean`):

Also return every absolute link found on the page.

## `respectRobotsTxt` (type: `boolean`):

Skip pages the site asks bots not to fetch. Recommended.

## Actor input object example

```json
  "urls": [
    "https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors",
    "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown"
  ],
  "extractMode": "article",
  "chunkTokens": 0,
  "maxCharacters": 0,
  "includeLinks": false,
  "respectRobotsTxt": true
}
```

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "urls": [
        "https://docs.apify.com/platform/actors",
        "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown"
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("dodge_bot/web-to-markdown").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
