## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

## DomainScope Business Directory — Apify Actor

Pull every business DomainScope has on file for a country/city, via
`POST /api/v1/domains/search` (public, no auth required) — deliberately
**without** an industry filter, unlike
[Domain Finder](https://apify.com/domainscope/domainscope-domain-finder).
Built for "what's the whole business landscape of this place" research
(market-expansion, franchise/real-estate scoping, local-market analysts)
rather than "find companies in industry X".

### Input

See [`.actor/input_schema.json`](.actor/input_schema.json): at least one
of `countries` / `cities` is required. `maxResults` (default 500, capped
at DomainScope's 1,000-record search-preview ceiling). `includeFacets`
(default true) adds one bonus dataset item with facet-count breakdowns —
**coverage varies by query**, most facet fields come back null for any
given request (verified live: only a handful, e.g. `countries`,
`registrant_countries`, a few `reg_*` vendor fields, are ever populated),
so treat it as a nice-to-have, not a guaranteed industry breakdown.

### Output

One dataset row per business, plus (when available) one
`{"_type": "facets", "facets": {...}}` item.

### The 1,000-record preview cap

Same limit as Domain Finder: DomainScope's search preview refuses any
page beyond record 1000. For bulk retrieval beyond that, use
DomainScope's own Export feature (`GET /export/snapshot`) directly.

### Billing

Charges one `business-returned` event per business delivered (the
optional facets item is not charged).

### Local development

```bash
npm install
echo '{"cities": ["Austin"], "maxResults": 50}' \
  > storage/key_value_stores/default/INPUT.json
npm run start:dev
```

### Deploying

```bash
apify login
apify push
```

# Actor input Schema

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Countries to pull, e.g. "United States". At least one of countries/cities is required.

## `cities` (type: `array`):

Cities to pull, e.g. "Austin". Combined with countries via AND when both are set.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of businesses to fetch. DomainScope's search preview caps out at 1000 records total regardless of this value — use DomainScope's own Export feature for bulk retrieval beyond that.

## `includeFacets` (type: `boolean`):

When true, adds one extra dataset item ({"\_type": "facets", ...}) with category/vendor breakdown counts for the query, if DomainScope returns any populated facets for it (coverage varies by field and query).

## `apiKey` (type: `string`):

Not required — POST /domains/search is public. Provide a key only if you have one and want calls attributed to your DomainScope account.

## `apiBaseUrl` (type: `string`):

Base URL of the DomainScope API, including the /api/v1 path. Change only for staging/testing.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "cities": [
    "Austin"
  ],
  "maxResults": 500,
  "includeFacets": true,
  "apiBaseUrl": "https://domainscope.scrapetheworld.org/api/v1"
}
# API
You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.
## JavaScript example
```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';

// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});

// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "cities": [
        "Austin"
    ]
};

// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("domainscope/domainscope-business-directory").call(input);

// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
