## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## App Store Market Gap Finder: new apps winning in one country, missing in others

Find app ideas that are **already proven** somewhere. This Actor scans the App Store top charts in 50+ countries, keeps the **new apps that top the charts in only 1-3 countries**, then checks the big markets (US, UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, Saudi Arabia...) where those apps are **not available** or **not charting**.

Every row is a market gap: an app people already pay for in one country, with no presence in others.

Built for app founders, indie developers, studios, investors and AI agents doing market research.

### What you get

| App | Charting in | Not available in | Released |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly budget meal planner (Food & Drink) | Israel #1 | US, UK, FR, DE, ES, IT, BR, JP, SA, AE | 2026 |
| Trading card price sniper (Shopping) | Netherlands #1, Belgium #14 | US, UK, FR, ES, IT, BR, JP, SA, AE | 2026 |
| Budget meal planner (Food & Drink) | Hungary #1 | 9 of 10 markets (all but US) | 2026 |
| Medical exam study app (Medical) | Germany #7, Austria #8 | US, UK, FR, ES, IT, BR, JP, SA, AE | 2026 |

*Real examples from a November 2026 run (top-grossing charts, 56 countries, 12 categories).*

Each row includes:

- `appName`, `developer`, `categories`, `releaseDate`, `appStoreUrl`
- `chartingIn`: countries and ranks where the app charts
- `bestRank`: its best position
- `notAvailableIn`: target markets where the app cannot be downloaded (the clearest gap)
- `availableButNotChartingIn`: target markets where it exists but nobody is paying for it yet
- `gapScore`: higher means a bigger opportunity (2 points per market where it is missing, 1 per market where it does not chart)
- `ratingCount`, `averageRating`, `price`, `languages`, `summary`

A ranked list of the 20 biggest gaps is saved as `OUTPUT` in the key-value store.

### How it works

1. Reads the top 100 of the chosen chart (top grossing by default) for every country and category.
2. Keeps apps first released within the chosen window (default: last 365 days) that chart in at most N countries (default: 3) and reach the chosen rank (default: top 50).
3. Checks each app's availability in your target markets with Apple's lookup API.

### Input

```json
{
  "chart": "top-grossing",
  "categories": ["Finance", "Health & Fitness", "Education"],
  "releasedWithinDays": 365,
  "maxCountries": 3,
  "targetCountries": ["us", "gb", "fr", "de"]
}
```

Leave countries and categories empty for a broad scan (56 countries, 12 non-game categories). One run takes about 1-2 minutes.

**Raw charts mode:** set `"mode": "charts"` to export the plain chart entries (rank, app, developer, category, country).

### Pricing

Pay per result: each market gap (local hit) returned, or each chart entry in raw charts mode. No subscription.

### Good to know

- Data comes from Apple's public App Store feeds. Games are not included.
- "Not available" means the app cannot be downloaded in that country's store today. Some apps are local by nature (banks, government services); check the summary before acting on a gap.

# Actor input Schema

## `mode` (type: `string`):

gaps: find new apps winning in only a few countries and where they are missing (main feature). charts: export the raw chart entries.

## `chart` (type: `string`):

Which App Store chart to scan. Top grossing shows where users actually pay.

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Two-letter country codes. Leave empty to scan 54 countries across all continents.

## `categories` (type: `array`):

App Store categories, e.g. Finance, Health & Fitness, Education. Leave empty for 12 common non-game categories.

## `releasedWithinDays` (type: `integer`):

Only apps first released in this window count as new.

## `maxCountries` (type: `integer`):

An app is a local hit if it charts in this many countries or fewer.

## `maxRank` (type: `integer`):

Keep apps that reach this rank or better in at least one country (1 = number one).

## `targetCountries` (type: `array`):

For each local hit, check whether the app is available and charting in these markets. Default: US, GB, FR, DE, ES, IT, BR, JP, SA, AE.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of local hits (or chart entries in charts mode) to return.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "mode": "gaps",
  "chart": "top-grossing",
  "releasedWithinDays": 365,
  "maxCountries": 3,
  "maxRank": 50,
  "maxResults": 100
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

Dataset rows: appName, categories, bestRank, chartingIn, notAvailableIn, availableButNotChartingIn, gapScore, releaseDate, ratingCount, summary, appStoreUrl.

## `summary` (type: `string`):

JSON record with run parameters and the 20 biggest gaps.
