## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Google Trends Growth Checker: is this keyword growing?

Give it a list of keywords and countries. Get back one clean row per keyword with **year-over-year search growth**, **3-month momentum**, a **0-100 growth score**, a plain-English trend label and the **fastest-rising related searches**, all from Google Trends.

Built for market research, SEO and content planning, product and niche validation, and **AI agents** that need a fast "is demand going up or down?" answer.

### What you get

| keyword | country | trend | growthScore | yoyChangePct | momentum3mPct |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| trump account | US | breakout | 83 | 464.3 | -20.8 |
| home battery backup | US | breakout | 62 | 122.2 | -45.7 |
| ai detector | US | stable | 55 | 7.4 | 52.0 |
| real id | US | declining | 33 | -49.1 | -25.2 |

*Example output from real Google Trends data, November 2026.*

Each row also includes:

- `risingQueries`: up to 10 related searches growing fastest (e.g. "+900%", "Breakout"), which is the best way to discover new keywords early
- `topQueries`: up to 10 most popular related searches
- `avgInterestLast12m` / `avgInterestPrev12m`, `peakWeek`, `currentVsPeakPct`
- `lowVolumeWarning`: true when Google has too little data for the keyword to be reliable
- `trendsUrl`: a link to check the chart yourself

A ranked summary (highest growth first) is saved as `OUTPUT` in the key-value store.

### New: explain the spike with news

Turn on `explainWithNews` and each row also gets a `newsExplanation`: the news headlines from the weeks around the keyword's biggest spike in the last 12 months, and the phrases that explain it.

| keyword | drivers found in the news |
|---|---|
| trump account | accounts, kids, $1,000 |
| crowdstrike | outage, global, tech |
| spirit airlines | bankruptcy, files, chapter 11 |
| notre-dame (France, in French) | paris, réouverture, cathédrale |

*Tested on 50 well-known spikes in English, French and Arabic: the right cause was found in 43 of 50 (86%).* Charged as a separate event, and only when an explanation is found.

### Trend labels

| label | meaning |
|---|---|
| `emerging` | no measurable searches a year ago, searches now |
| `breakout` | +100% or more vs the previous 12 months |
| `rising` | +20% to +100% |
| `stable` | -20% to +20% |
| `declining` | below -20% |

**Growth score:** 50 means flat. Above 50 means growing, below 50 means shrinking. It is mostly year-over-year, adjusted for the last quarter.

### Input

```json
{
  "keywords": ["home battery backup", "portable power station"],
  "countries": ["US", "GB"],
  "includeRelatedQueries": true
}
```

- `keywords`: up to 1,000 per run
- `countries`: two-letter codes (US, GB, FR, DE, AU, ...) or `WORLDWIDE`
- Each keyword is checked in every country listed

### Pricing

Pay per keyword checked. Failed checks are never charged. No subscription.

### Good to know

- Google Trends measures **relative interest** (0-100, scaled to each keyword's own peak), not absolute search counts. Use this Actor to see whether demand is growing; use a search-volume tool to see how big it is.
- Growth compares the last 52 complete weeks with the 52 weeks before them, so seasonality is cancelled out.
- Residential proxy is set by default because Google limits automated access. The Actor retries automatically on a fresh IP.

### For AI agents (MCP)

One call answers "which of these keywords are growing, and where?" Read `rankedByGrowth` from `OUTPUT`, or use the `trend` and `growthScore` fields of each dataset row.

# Actor input Schema

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

Keywords or phrases to check, one per line (up to 1,000). Each keyword is checked in every country below. Example: home battery backup.

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Two-letter country codes (US, GB, FR, DE, AU...). Use WORLDWIDE for global. Default: US.

## `includeRelatedQueries` (type: `boolean`):

Adds the 10 fastest-rising and 10 most popular related searches for each keyword. Useful to discover new keywords.

## `explainWithNews` (type: `boolean`):

For each keyword, finds the news headlines from the week of its biggest spike in the last 12 months and extracts the phrases that explain it (e.g. 'launched July 4', 'outage'). Charged only when an explanation is found. Best in English, French and Arabic.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many keywords to check at the same time. Higher is faster but more likely to be rate-limited by Google.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Residential proxies are recommended: Google Trends blocks datacenter IPs quickly.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "keywords": [
    "home battery backup",
    "portable power station",
    "heat pump rebate"
  ],
  "countries": [
    "US"
  ],
  "includeRelatedQueries": true,
  "explainWithNews": false,
  "maxConcurrency": 3,
  "proxyConfiguration": {
    "useApifyProxy": true,
    "apifyProxyGroups": [
      "RESIDENTIAL"
    ]
  }
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

Dataset rows: keyword, country, trend (emerging/breakout/rising/stable/declining), growthScore, yoyChangePct, momentum3mPct, risingQueries, topQueries, status.

## `summary` (type: `string`):

JSON record with keywords ranked by growth score and the list of breakout keywords.
