# Image Metadata Extractor: EXIF, IPTC, XMP and color profile (`examsens.ai/image-metadata-extractor`) Actor

Reads the EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata, dimensions, format and ICC color profile of every image URL you list. GPS coordinates are left out unless you turn them on.

## Pricing

from $4.50 / 1,000 image processeds

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Image Metadata Extractor: EXIF, IPTC, XMP and color profile

Give it a list of image URLs and it returns, for each image, the format, dimensions, color mode, the embedded ICC color profile, and every readable EXIF, IPTC and XMP field. Process many images in one run and export the results as JSON, CSV or Excel.

Only the file header and metadata blocks are read. Pixels are never decoded.

### What you get for each image

- Format and MIME type, width, height, megapixels, color mode (such as RGB or RGBA), alpha channel, frame count for animated images, and DPI
- The ICC color profile: its name (such as `Display P3`), color space, device class and version
- A `camera` summary: make, model, lens, software, date taken, exposure time, f number, ISO, focal length, flash and orientation
- `exif`: every readable EXIF field by its standard name, from the main image block, the Exif block and the interoperability block
- `iptc`: IPTC fields by name, such as `ObjectName`, `Headline`, `Keywords`, `Byline`, `Credit`, `CopyrightNotice`, `CaptionAbstract`, `City` and `Country`. Repeatable fields come back as lists.
- `xmp`: the XMP packet as `prefix:name` fields, with lists for sequences and bags, nested objects for structures, and one entry per language for alternate text
- `gpsPresent`: whether the file carries GPS data
- The download details: HTTP status, final URL after redirects, content type and file size

### GPS coordinates are off by default

GPS coordinates in a photo can show where a person lives or where they were. By default this actor removes them: the GPS block of EXIF is left out, and so is every XMP field with GPS in its name. The item still tells you whether the file carried GPS data, in `gpsPresent`.

To get the coordinates, turn on "Include GPS coordinates". Each item then carries a `gps` object with the raw GPS fields and decimal `latitude` and `longitude` (negative for south and west) and `altitude` when the file has one. Turn it on only when you have a lawful reason to process location data.

### Input

- Image URLs (required): direct links to the image files
- Include GPS coordinates (default off)
- Maximum file size in MB (default 50): larger files get an error item and are not downloaded in full
- Parallel downloads (default 5)

### Formats

Tested with JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF and GIF files, including animated GIF.

### Output

Dataset: one item per URL, in the order you listed them. A URL that cannot be read gets `ok: false` and an `error`, such as `HTTP 404`, an unknown host, or "the file is not an image format this actor can read" for a web page. One bad URL never stops the run. Export as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read it over the API.

### Pricing

Pay per event: one event per image read. URLs that fail are not charged. The run stops when it reaches the maximum charge you set.

### Scope and conduct

Only the URLs you supply are downloaded. The actor does not log in anywhere, uses no proxies, and stores no copy of the images. Metadata can hold names and contact details that a photographer or editor put there; process it in line with the privacy law that applies to you.

# Actor input Schema

## `imageUrls` (type: `array`):

Direct links to image files (JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF and other formats Pillow reads).

## `includeGps` (type: `boolean`):

Off by default. GPS coordinates can reveal where a person lives or was, so they are removed from the output unless you turn this on. When off, the item still says whether the file carried GPS data.

## `maxFileSizeMb` (type: `integer`):

Skip images larger than this, with an error item.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many images to download at the same time.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "imageUrls": [
    {
      "url": "https://www.iptc.org/std/photometadata/examples/IPTC-PhotometadataRef-Std2021.1.jpg"
    }
  ],
  "includeGps": false,
  "maxFileSizeMb": 50,
  "maxConcurrency": 5
}
```

## `results` (type: `string`):

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
        }
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("examsens.ai/image-metadata-extractor").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
