## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

## LEI Lookup API – GLEIF Legal Entity Identifier Search with Parent Companies

Find any company's Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) by name or LEI code and get its legal name, addresses, registration status, renewal date, BIC codes and direct/ultimate parent from the official GLEIF index – no API key.

Data comes straight from the public **GLEIF Global LEI Index** (CC0 / public domain) through GLEIF's free API. No API key, no proxy, no scraping of web pages.

### LEI lookup use cases: KYB, KYC and CRM enrichment

- Resolve a **list of company names to LEIs** in one run (search by legal name or full-text).
- Validate and enrich a **list of LEI codes** (up to 50 codes are batched per API call).
- Filter by **country** and **ACTIVE** entities only.
- Resolve **direct parent and ultimate parent** (consolidation ownership reported to GLEIF).

### Input: company names or LEI codes

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `queries` (required) | Company names and/or 20-character LEI codes. LEI codes are detected automatically. |
| `searchMode` | `legalName` (default) or `fulltext`. |
| `country` | Optional ISO-3166 alpha-2 filter, e.g. `US`. |
| `maxResultsPerQuery` | Records per name query (default 5). |
| `includeParents` | Also resolve direct / ultimate parent records (default `false`). |
| `activeOnly` | Only return ACTIVE entities. |

```json
{
  "queries": ["JPMorgan Chase Bank, National Association", "549300C8WN23B1QHFO97"],
  "maxResultsPerQuery": 1,
  "country": "US",
  "includeParents": true
}
```

### Output: LEI record with addresses and parent company

```json
{
  "lei": "7H6GLXDRUGQFU57RNE97",
  "legalName": "JPMorgan Chase Bank, National Association",
  "otherNames": ["JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A.", "CHASE MANHATTAN BANK"],
  "jurisdiction": "US",
  "entityStatus": "ACTIVE",
  "legalAddress": { "lines": ["1111 Polaris Pkwy"], "city": "Columbus", "region": "US-OH", "country": "US", "postalCode": "43240" },
  "registrationStatus": "ISSUED",
  "nextRenewalDate": "2026-12-28T23:20:00Z",
  "directParent": null,
  "ultimateParent": null,
  "gleifUrl": "https://search.gleif.org/#/record/7H6GLXDRUGQFU57RNE97",
  "source": "GLEIF Global LEI Index (CC0)"
}
```

A full real sample run is in `samples/output.json`.

### LEI lookup pricing (pay per result)

- **LEI record returned:** $0.002
- **Parent resolved** (only when `includeParents` is on and a parent exists): $0.004

You are never charged for queries that return nothing. Set a maximum cost per run in Apify and the Actor stops when it is reached.

### Limits and data notes

- Runs are paced at about 1 request/second, under GLEIF's published limit of 60 requests/minute per IP.
- A small share of LEIs report "no known parent" or "non-consolidating"; in that case the parent fields are `null`.
- Data accuracy depends on what entities self-report to GLEIF. This Actor is not affiliated with or endorsed by GLEIF.

Related searches: LEI lookup, LEI code search, GLEIF API, legal entity identifier, company ownership, ultimate parent, KYB data, counterparty data.

### Run via API (cURL)

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/exprmntl~gleif-lei-lookup/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"queries": ["Microsoft Corporation", "HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394"], "includeParents": true}'
```

### Run from Python

```python
from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN")
run = client.actor("exprmntl/gleif-lei-lookup").call(run_input={"queries": ["Microsoft Corporation", "HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394"], "includeParents": true})
for item in client.dataset(run["default_dataset_id"]).iterate_items():
    print(item)
```

Running with no input performs a small demo run with example data.

### FAQ

**How do I find a company's LEI number?**
Put the company name in `queries`. The Actor fuzzy-searches GLEIF legal names and returns matching LEIs with status and address.

**Can I look up the parent or ultimate owner of a company?**
Yes. Set `includeParents: true` to add the direct and ultimate parent LEI records reported to GLEIF.

**Can I check many companies at once?**
Yes. Pass hundreds of names or LEIs in one run; results come back as one dataset (JSON, CSV, Excel).

**Do I need a GLEIF API key?**
No. GLEIF data is free (CC0); you only pay the per-result Actor fee.

**Is this good for KYB onboarding?**
It verifies legal name, jurisdiction, registration status and LEI renewal – a common first KYB check. It is not a full compliance solution.

# Actor input Schema

## `queries` (type: `array`):

One entry per line. Each entry is either a 20-character LEI (e.g. HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394) or a company legal name (e.g. Microsoft Corporation). LEIs are looked up in batches of 50; names are searched one at a time.

## `searchMode` (type: `string`):

How company names are matched. 'legalName' searches the legal-name field; 'fulltext' searches all text fields (names, other names, addresses) and is broader but noisier.

## `country` (type: `string`):

Optional. Restrict name searches to entities whose legal address is in this country, e.g. US, DE, GB.

## `maxResultsPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of LEI records returned for each company-name query (1-200). Ignored for LEI queries.

## `includeParents` (type: `boolean`):

Adds the direct and ultimate parent (LEI + legal name) of every returned entity, or the official reason no parent is reported (e.g. NATURAL_PERSONS, NON_CONSOLIDATING). Uses 1-2 extra API calls per record, so runs are slower.

## `activeOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Drop entities whose status is not ACTIVE.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "queries": [
    "Microsoft Corporation",
    "HWUPKR0MPOU8FGXBT394"
  ],
  "searchMode": "legalName",
  "maxResultsPerQuery": 5,
  "includeParents": false,
  "activeOnly": false
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

One dataset item per GLEIF LEI record, with optional direct and ultimate parent.

## `overview` (type: `string`):

Key fields as a table view.
