## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Coles Australia Scraper — Products, Prices & Specials

Collect product data from **coles.com.au**. Coles protects its site with a JavaScript bot check that blocks ordinary HTTP scrapers; this actor drives a real browser, passes the check, and reads the same product data the website uses.

**From US$2 per 1,000 products.** You pay only for products saved to the dataset.

### What you get

Product ID, name, brand, pack size, current price, was price, savings, unit price (and its text, e.g. "$1.50 per 1L"), special flag, promotion text, availability, department / category / subcategory path, image URL and product URL.

### Input

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `searchTerms` | One search per keyword. |
| `categories` | Coles browse paths or URLs, e.g. `dairy-eggs-fridge/milk` or `https://www.coles.com.au/browse/pantry`. |
| `onlySpecials` | Only products on special. With nothing else filled in, goes through every department. |
| `maxItems` / `maxItemsPerQuery` | Exact limits. |
| `proxyConfiguration` | An Australian residential proxy is strongly recommended; the actor upgrades to one automatically after repeated blocks. |

Example:

```json
{ "searchTerms": ["milk", "bread"], "categories": ["pantry"], "maxItems": 300 }
```

### Output example

```json
{
  "productId": "6075011",
  "name": "Coles Full Cream Milk",
  "brand": "Coles",
  "size": "2L",
  "price": 3,
  "wasPrice": null,
  "unitPrice": 1.5,
  "unitPriceText": "$1.50 per 1L",
  "isOnSpecial": false,
  "categoryPath": "Dairy, Eggs & Fridge > Milk > Full Cream Milk",
  "imageUrl": "https://cdn.productimages.coles.com.au/productimages/6/6075011.jpg",
  "url": "https://www.coles.com.au/product/coles-full-cream-milk-2l-6075011"
}
```

### Pricing

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Product scraped (`product-result`) | US$0.002 (US$2 per 1,000) |

Plus the standard Apify actor-start charge. Browser runs cost more to operate than plain HTTP scrapers, which is why the price is higher than for sites that need no browser.

### FAQ

**Why a browser?** Every plain HTTP request to Coles receives a JavaScript challenge instead of data. A real (headed) browser passes it.

**What if Coles blocks a session?** The actor opens a fresh session / new IP, then switches to an Australian residential proxy. It never tries to solve CAPTCHAs and fails with a clear message if nothing gets through, rather than returning zero items silently.

**Which prices?** National online prices shown without choosing a store.

**Personal data?** None. Only public product and price data.

# Actor input Schema

## `searchTerms` (type: `array`):

One search per entry (for example: milk, nappies, vitamin c).

## `categories` (type: `array`):

Coles browse paths or URLs, e.g. dairy-eggs-fridge, dairy-eggs-fridge/milk, https://www.coles.com.au/browse/pantry.

## `onlySpecials` (type: `boolean`):

Keep only products currently on special. With nothing else filled in, collects specials across all departments.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Total products to save across all queries.

## `maxItemsPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

Optional cap for each keyword or category.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Coles blocks datacenter IPs often. The actor starts with the proxy you select and switches to an Australian residential proxy automatically after repeated blocks. Residential (AU) recommended.
