## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## New Business Leads: Texas, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle

Get **businesses that just opened** as a clean lead list: name, legal name, industry, address and
start date. Every result comes from an **official public record**: the Texas Comptroller's sales
tax permits and the business license and registration feeds of Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco
and Seattle. No logins, no scraping of private sites, one schema for every city.

About **3,000 new businesses a week**, most of them in Texas.

### Who uses this

- **Insurance agents**: general liability, workers' comp and commercial auto, before the first policy is bound
- **Payments and POS**: new restaurants, bars and shops choosing a card processor
- **Bookkeepers, CPAs and payroll**: new LLCs that need books, payroll and a first tax return

### How to use

1. Pick a city: Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth, all of Texas, Chicago, Los Angeles,
   San Francisco or Seattle.
2. Choose how far back to look (default: last 7 days) or set exact dates.
3. Optional filters: industries, ZIP codes, towns or neighborhoods, keywords, LLCs and corporations only.
4. Run, then download CSV, Excel or JSON. Or schedule it daily with `daysBack: 1` and send results to
   Google Sheets, Slack, email or your CRM with Apify integrations.

### What counts as "new"

- **Texas**: a new sales tax permit. Permits for businesses that were already selling more than
  6 months before the permit (a new owner, or catching up on paperwork) are skipped unless you turn
  on *Include established businesses*.
- **Chicago**: a first business license at that location. Existing businesses that are only adding
  a license (a patio, liquor, tobacco), special events, raffles and licenses held by individuals are
  dropped.
- **Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle**: a new business tax registration, by the business's start
  date. Los Angeles businesses often register a few weeks after opening, so recent days fill in over time.

### Data sources

| City | Source | Updated |
|---|---|---|
| Texas (statewide) | data.texas.gov: Active Sales Tax Permit Holders (Texas Comptroller) | Daily |
| Chicago, IL | data.cityofchicago.org: Business Licenses | Daily, a few days behind |
| Los Angeles, CA | data.lacity.org: Listing of Active Businesses | Weekly |
| San Francisco, CA | data.sf.gov: Registered Business Locations | Daily |
| Seattle, WA | data.seattle.gov: Active Business License Tax Certificate | A few times a week |

Phone numbers, emails and mailing addresses are left out on purpose. Industries come from the NAICS
code each business reported (or its license type in Chicago) and are occasionally off. This Actor is
independent and not affiliated with any of these agencies.

# Actor input Schema

## `city` (type: `string`):

Which city's new businesses to return. Each run reads one city; schedule one run per city to cover several. Texas cities come from the state's sales tax permit list, so they include every business that sells taxable goods or services.

## `daysBack` (type: `integer`):

How many days of new businesses to return, ending today. Los Angeles businesses often register weeks after they open, so its recent days fill in over time. Ignored if you set a start date.

## `startDate` (type: `string`):

Optional. First date to include (YYYY-MM-DD): the license issue date in Chicago, the permit issue date in Texas, and the business start date elsewhere.

## `endDate` (type: `string`):

Optional. Last date to include (YYYY-MM-DD). Defaults to today.

## `industries` (type: `array`):

Leave empty for all. Industries come from each business's NAICS code, or its license type in Chicago.

## `towns` (type: `array`):

Leave empty for the whole city. Texas statewide: city names such as Round Rock, Plano, Katy. Chicago: neighborhoods such as West Loop, Logan Square, Lincoln Park. San Francisco: Mission, Financial District/South Beach, Sunset/Parkside.

## `zipCodes` (type: `array`):

Leave empty for all ZIP codes.

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

Keep businesses whose name or activity contains any of these words, e.g. taqueria, dental, roofing, salon.

## `entitiesOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Skip sole proprietors. Uses the ownership type where the city publishes it (Texas, Seattle) and the legal name elsewhere.

## `includeEstablished` (type: `boolean`):

Texas also issues permits to businesses that have been selling for a while (new outlet, new owner, catching up on paperwork). By default those are skipped when the first sale was more than 6 months before the permit.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Stop after this many businesses. 0 means no limit.

## Actor input object example

{
  "city": "austin",

  "maxItems": 0
}
```
# Actor output Schema
## `businesses` (type: `string`):
One item per new business location: name, legal name, industry, address, start date and a map link.
