## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## GitHub Trending Scraper – Repos by Language & Period

**GitHub Trending scraper** that reads the public **github.com/trending** page and returns **repository name, URL, description, language, total stars, forks and stars gained** today, this week or this month, for any programming language.

### What does it do?

- Trending repositories for all languages or a list of languages.
- Daily, weekly or monthly periods, optional spoken-language filter.
- Rank, owner/name, URL, description, language, stars, forks and stars gained in the period.
- Repository data only: no "built by" contributors, avatars or user profiles.

### Use cases

- **Developer newsletters**: weekly trending repos by stack.
- **AI/open-source scouting**: spot fast-rising projects early.
- **VC and DevRel research**: track momentum of tools in your category.
- **AI agents**: give an LLM a fresh list of popular repos to summarize.

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `since` | Trending period. Example: weekly |
| `languages` | One trending list per language (GitHub slug). Empty = all languages. Example: python, typescript, rust |
| `spokenLanguage` | Optional ISO 639-1 code for README language. Example: zh |
| `maxItems` | GitHub shows up to 25 per list. Example: 25 |

Example input:

```json
### Pricing
Pay per event: **$1.80 per 1,000 repositorys** plus $0.00005 per run start. There is no extra platform usage charge.
### FAQ
**Do I need a GitHub token?** No. The trending page is public and allowed by GitHub's robots.txt.
**Why only 25 per language?** GitHub Trending itself lists up to 25 repositories per page; some days it shows fewer.
**Does it collect developer data?** No. Contributor avatars and usernames in "Built by" are dropped; only the repository identifier (owner/name) is kept.
**How often does trending change?** GitHub recomputes it several times a day; schedule the Actor daily or hourly.
**Language slugs?** Use the slug from the URL, e.g. c++ → c%2B%2B, "jupyter notebook" → jupyter-notebook.
**Do I need a login or API key?** No. It reads GitHub's public trending page; you only need an Apify account.
**Can AI agents use it?** Yes. Call it through the Apify API, or from Claude, Cursor or any MCP client via the Apify MCP server.
