## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## European Patents Scraper API – EPO Official Data

**European patents scraper** and API built on the **official European Patent Office "Linked open EP data" service**: get **EP publication number, title, applicants, CPC classes, filing / grant / publication dates and PDF links** by keyword, applicant, CPC code or publication number.

### What does it do?

- New EP patent applications and grants published in the last N days (weekly Wednesday releases).
- Filters: keywords in the English title, applicant name, CPC prefix (e.g. H01M, G06N), kind (A1/A2/B1...).
- Direct lookup of EP publication numbers (any year since 1978).
- Links to the official PDF, the European Patent Register and Espacenet.
- Official source (EPO), not a Google Patents scrape. Inventor names are not returned.

### Use cases

- **Competitive intelligence**: weekly new patents from your competitors.
- **Technology watch**: new filings in a CPC class (e.g. batteries, AI, hydrogen).
- **IP and R\&D teams**: enrich patent numbers with dates, applicants and links.
- **Investors and analysts**: track patenting activity by company.
- **AI agents / RAG**: feed fresh patent metadata to an LLM.

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `keywords` | Words that must appear in the English title (comma = AND). Example: solid state, battery |
| `applicant` | Company / applicant name filter (case-insensitive). Example: siemens |
| `cpcPrefix` | Cooperative Patent Classification prefix. Example: H01M (batteries) or G06N (AI) |
| `lastDays` | EP publications come out every Wednesday. Ignored when you pass publication numbers. Example: 30 |
| `kinds` | Empty = all. Example: \["B1"] for granted patents only |
| `publicationNumbers` | Look up specific EP publications (any date). Example: EP1471585 |
| `maxItems` | Example: 25 |

Example input:

```json
{
  "keywords": "battery",
  "lastDays": 14,
  "maxItems": 25
}
```

### Pricing

Pay per event: **$2.70 per 1,000 patents** plus $0.00005 per run start. There is no extra platform usage charge.

### FAQ

**Which patents are covered?** European patent publications (EP A and B documents) in the EPO Linked open EP data set, updated weekly. US/WO/CN patents are not included.

**Why not USPTO PatentsView?** The PatentsView PatentSearch API is offline since its 2026 migration to the USPTO Open Data Portal, which requires a personal API key. This Actor uses only keyless official data.

**Does it return inventors?** No, only applicants (mostly companies and universities), to minimise personal data.

**Why fewer results than maxItems?** Keyword and applicant filters run over the last N days only; increase lastDays.

**How fast is it?** One query, usually 1-10 seconds.

**Can I schedule it?** Yes, e.g. every Thursday to catch Wednesday's publications.

**Do I need a login or API key?** No. It uses the source's public API; you only need an Apify account.

**Can AI agents use it?** Yes. Call it through the Apify API, or from Claude, Cursor or any MCP client via the Apify MCP server.
