## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## PubMed Scraper API – Search Papers & PMIDs

**PubMed scraper** via **NCBI E-utilities**: search papers by keyword and get **PMID, title, journal, publication date and DOI**. No abstracts or author names. No login. JSON suited to RAG pipelines, LLM tools and MCP.

### What does it do?

- Search PubMed with a free-text query (NCBI ESearch + ESummary).
- Return PMID, title, journal, pub date, DOI and PubMed URL.
- Sort by publication date or relevance.
- Cap results with `maxItems`.
- Does **not** return abstracts or author lists (by design).

### Use cases

- **Literature triage**: build PMID lists for a topic without scraping HTML.
- **RAG / LLM**: seed retrieval pipelines with paper titles and DOIs.
- **Alerts**: monitor new papers matching a query.
- **AI agents**: call via Apify MCP for PubMed search in chat workflows.

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `query` | PubMed search query. Example: CRISPR gene editing |
| `maxItems` | Max papers to return. Example: 50 |
| `sort` | Sort order: `pub_date` or `relevance`. Default pub_date. |

Example input:

```json
{
  "query": "CRISPR gene editing",
  "maxItems": 10,
  "sort": "pub_date"
}
```

### Output

Real output (sample from a prior run on 27 Oct 2026, Europe/Madrid):

```json
[
  {
    "pmid": "42572581",
    "title": "An orthogonal transcription system enables high-efficiency rescue of measles virus-based vaccine vectors against multiple pathogens.",
    "journal": "Synthetic and systems biotechnology",
    "pubDate": "2027 Mar",
    "doi": "10.1016/j.synbio.2026.06.012",
    "url": "https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42572581/",
    "source": "NCBI PubMed"
  },
  {
    "pmid": "42771313",
    "title": "Lipid Nanoparticle-Mediated Delivery of CRISPR-Cas9 Components for Genome Editing.",
    "journal": "Methods in molecular biology (Clifton, N.J.)",
    "pubDate": "2027",
    "doi": "10.1007/978-1-0716-5547-4_10",
    "url": "https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42771313/",
    "source": "NCBI PubMed"
  }
]
```

Export as JSON, CSV or Excel, read through the API, or send to Google Sheets, Make, Zapier, n8n or webhooks. You can also run this Actor from AI agents through the Apify MCP server.

### Pricing

Pay per event: **$2.20 per 1,000 papers plus $0.00005 per run start.** There is no extra platform usage charge beyond Apify’s normal platform fees if any apply to your plan.

### FAQ

**Are abstracts included?** No. This Actor returns metadata only (PMID, title, journal, date, DOI) to keep payloads small and license-safe.

**Do I need an NCBI API key?** Not required for modest volumes. NCBI rate-limits anonymous traffic; keep `maxItems` reasonable.

**Can AI agents use it?** Yes. Output is LLM/RAG-ready JSON via Apify API or MCP.
