## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Shopify App Store Intelligence

**See every app in a Shopify App Store category ranked, and see what merchants hate about each one.** Leave the default input as it is and in about 50 seconds you get the top 24 product-review apps, each with its rating, review count, cheapest paid plan, 1-5 star breakdown, the share of 1-2 star reviews, and its newest complaints tagged by theme.

### Why this one

| | This Actor | Typical Shopify App Store scrapers |
|---|---|---|
| Whole category, in Shopify's own ranking order | ✅ | Often single apps or search only |
| 1-5 star breakdown and % negative | ✅ | Rare |
| Complaint mining: newest 1-2 star reviews only | ✅ | ❌ (all reviews, newest or most relevant) |
| Complaint themes (billing, support, bugs, performance, ease of use, features, uninstall, theme conflict) | ✅ | ❌ |
| Developer reply rate, "time using the app" | ✅ | Partial |
| Cheapest and top paid plan in $/month, free plan or trial, Built for Shopify, launch date | ✅ | Partial |
| One flat table (CSV-ready) with two views: Apps and Complaints | ✅ | Nested JSON |

### Use cases

- **App developers**: find categories where leaders are weak (high % negative, slow replies), then read exactly what merchants complain about. That's your roadmap and your landing-page copy.
- **Agencies and consultants**: build shortlists for clients with real ratings, prices and red flags.
- **Investors and M\&A**: screen apps by age, review volume, rating trend and complaint load.
- **Competitive monitoring**: schedule it weekly on your competitors' handles and get their newest bad reviews.

### Input

| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| `categories` | product reviews | Category slugs or URLs from apps.shopify.com/categories (use the leaf category, e.g. `marketing-and-conversion-upsell-and-bundles`) |
| `appHandles` | – | Specific apps (`judgeme` or a full app URL) |
| `maxAppsPerCategory` | 24 | Up to 1,000, in ranking order |
| `includeDetails` | true | Off gives a fast, cheap leaderboard |
| `reviewsPerApp` | 5 | 0 to 100 |
| `reviewFilter` | complaints | `complaints` (1-2 star) or `newest` |
| `includeAds` | false | Include sponsored slots |

### Pricing (pay per result)

- App with full details: **$4.00 per 1,000** ($0.004 each)
- App listing only (details off): **$1.00 per 1,000**
- Review: **$0.50 per 1,000**

The default run (24 apps with up to 5 complaints each) costs about **$0.14**. A full 200-app category with no reviews costs about **$0.80**. Error rows are never charged.

### API / MCP

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/forgelabs~shopify-app-store-intelligence/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"appHandles":["klaviyo-email-marketing","omnisend"],"reviewsPerApp":20}'
```

### FAQ

**Is this allowed?** It reads only public app listing, category and review pages on apps.shopify.com, with no login. It respects robots.txt: it never uses search-query URLs, `/internal/` or `/services/`. Reviewers appear as their store (business) name and country, which is exactly how Shopify shows them publicly.
**How are complaint themes detected?** With multilingual-friendly keyword rules on the English text, so non-English reviews may get no themes. Use them for triage and read the review text before you draw conclusions.
**Why "48K"-style counts?** Shopify shows rounded counts for large star buckets. We back-compute the exact 5-star count from the exact total where we can.
