## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Grants.gov Federal Grants: Search & New-Grant Alerts

Find U.S. federal grant opportunities on [Grants.gov](https://www.grants.gov) and get them as structured data. Each opportunity includes the award ceiling and floor, estimated total funding, number of awards, eligible applicants, full description and agency contact.

Turn on **alert mode** and schedule the Actor daily, and each run returns only grants you haven't seen yet. That's a free alternative to paid grant-alert services.

- **Filter what matters.** Keyword, agency (NSF, NIH, DOD, DOE, USDA...), eligible applicant type (small business, nonprofit, university, tribal, local government...), category and funding instrument.
- **Award size up front.** Ceiling, floor, estimated total funding and expected number of awards, as numbers.
- **Forecasts included.** See grants before they open, with estimated posting, due and award dates.
- **Alert mode.** Get only new opportunities on every scheduled run, tracked separately for each filter set.
- **No API key.** Works out of the box.

### Who uses it

- **Nonprofits and grant writers** tracking new funding in their focus area.
- **Small businesses** looking for SBIR/STTR and other federal funding open to for-profits.
- **Universities and research offices** monitoring NSF, NIH, DOE and DOD announcements.
- **Cities, counties and tribes** watching for infrastructure, housing and community grants.
- **Grant-consulting firms and AI agents** that match opportunities to clients.

### FAQ

**Where does the data come from?** From Grants.gov's public search service, the official source for federal grant opportunities.

**Do I need an API key?** No.

**What about attachments?** Attachment file names are listed; download them from the opportunity page linked in `url`.

**Pairs well with** [SAM.gov Contract Opportunities](https://apify.com/frank0309/sam-gov-opportunities) for federal contracts instead of grants.
