## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## ClinicalTrials.gov Search: Trials, Sponsors & Sites

Search the official **ClinicalTrials.gov** registry (600,000+ studies worldwide) by **condition, drug, sponsor, phase, recruitment status, country, city or distance**, and get clean data: one row per **study**, or one row per **trial site** (hospital, clinic) with its location and contacts.

Official U.S. Government data, fetched live at every run.

### What can you do with it?

- 🏥 **Site selection & hospital prospecting** (CROs, site networks, medtech): *"every site of recruiting phase 3 breast cancer trials sponsored by industry in France"*, *"recruiting diabetes trial sites within 30 km of New York"*.
- 📈 **Competitive intelligence** (pharma, biotech, investors): *"all Novo Nordisk semaglutide trials"*, *"phase 2 and 3 lung cancer trials by sponsor"*.
- 🆕 **Weekly watch**: schedule *"industry trials first posted in the last 7 days"* and get only the new ones.
- 🔎 **Enrichment**: turn a list of NCT numbers into full study records.

### Why this Actor?

| | This Actor | Typical ClinicalTrials.gov tools |
|---|---|---|
| One row per trial site, filtered to your area | ✅ only the sites in your countries / cities / radius, and with your recruitment status | ❌ the whole site list of every matching trial |
| Distance search | ✅ latitude, longitude and radius | ⚠️ rare |
| Sponsor type, phase, study type, dates | ✅ industry vs academic, phases, new or updated since | ⚠️ |
| Countries by name or code | ✅ "FR" or "France", all ClinicalTrials.gov spellings | ❌ |
| Clean, flat fields | ✅ sponsor, phases, enrollment, dates, MeSH terms, ages, primary outcomes, site count, countries | ⚠️ deeply nested JSON |
| Terms of use respected | ✅ source and processing date in every row, no e-mail addresses (forbidden for marketing by ClinicalTrials.gov) | ⚠️ often copied as is |

### Output

**One row per study** (real example, shortened):

```json
{
    "nctId": "NCT06731907",
    "title": "A Study of Pembrolizumab With or Without Chemotherapy in Combination With Additional Treatments for Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) (MK-3475-01G/KEYMAKER U01)",
    "status": "RECRUITING",
    "phases": ["PHASE2"],
    "leadSponsor": "Merck Sharp & Dohme LLC",
    "leadSponsorType": "INDUSTRY",
    "siteCount": 41,
    "url": "https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT06731907",
    "dataProcessedOn": "2026-10-02"
}
```

Study fields: `officialTitle`, `acronym`, `whyStopped`, `studyType`, `conditions`, `conditionMeshTerms`, `keywords`, `interventions`, `interventionMeshTerms`, `collaborators`, `responsibleParty`, `enrollment`, `allocation`, `interventionModel`, `primaryPurpose`, `masking`, `startDate`, `primaryCompletionDate`, `completionDate`, `firstPosted`, `lastUpdated`, `hasResults`, `sex`, `minimumAge`, `maximumAge`, `healthyVolunteers`, `briefSummary`, `primaryOutcomes`, `centralContacts`, `overallOfficials`, `countries`, `sites` (first 100).

**One row per site** (real example, recruiting diabetes trials near New York):

```json
{
    "nctId": "NCT07142252",
    "facility": "Columbia University",
    "city": "New York",
    "country": "United States",
    "siteStatus": "RECRUITING",
    "contacts": [
        { "name": "Amy Doytchinov, BSN, RN", "role": "CONTACT", "phone": "212-851-5505" },
        { "name": "Jacqueline Lonier, MD", "role": "PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR" }
    ]
}
```

Site rows also carry `state`, `zip`, `latitude`, `longitude` and the main study fields (title, status, phases, conditions, interventions, sponsor, enrollment, dates, URL).

### Notes

- Contacts are given with name, role and phone. **E-mail addresses are removed everywhere**, including from free text: ClinicalTrials.gov's terms forbid using them for marketing.
- Data are reorganised into flat fields, not modified. Every row carries `dataProcessedOn`, the date ClinicalTrials.gov processed the data, as its terms require.
- With free-text criteria the results are sorted by relevance; with "first posted" dates, newest first.

### Pricing

Pay per study returned, or per trial site in one-row-per-site mode (sites are cheaper). NCT numbers that are not found are free. Set a maximum cost per run and the Actor stops exactly there.
