## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## OpenStreetMap Business Leads – Phones, Websites, No Google

Get **local business lead lists from OpenStreetMap** for any category and any area in the world: name, full address,
phone, mobile, e-mail, website, opening hours, brand, cuisine, wheelchair access, social links and coordinates.
No Google Maps scraping, no API key, no login - just open data under the **ODbL** licence, at **$0.40 per 1,000 places**.

Optionally, the Actor visits each business's own website and adds **e-mail addresses and social profiles** found there.

### What it does

1. Resolves your area names (e.g. `Kadıköy, Istanbul`, `Kreuzberg, Berlin`, `Austin, Texas`) to their official
   OpenStreetMap boundary, or takes a bounding box or a point + radius.
2. Queries OpenStreetMap through public **Overpass API** servers whose terms allow this use, with server-side timeouts,
   automatic retries, fallback servers and automatic splitting of heavy areas into smaller tiles.
3. Returns one clean row per business, the best-documented places (phone + website + e-mail) first.
4. (Optional) Fetches the business homepage (+ at most one contact page, robots.txt respected) for e-mails and social links.

### Use cases

- **Local-services agencies and SDRs** who cannot or will not use Google Maps scrapers: dentists, plumbers, restaurants,
  hotels, lawyers, car repair shops... with phone and website.
- **Market sizing**: "how many dentists are there in Kadıköy?", "pharmacies per district".
- **GIS and analytics teams**: POIs with coordinates, opening hours and OSM IDs for joins.
- **AI agents** that need a list of places for a category and city.

### Input example

```json
{
  "categories": ["dentist"],
  "areas": ["Kadıköy, Istanbul"],
  "requirePhoneOrWebsite": false,
  "enrichWebsite": false,
  "maxItems": 100
}
```

- `categories`: 53 friendly categories (dentist, doctor, pharmacy, restaurant, cafe, hotel, plumber, electrician,
  car_repair, lawyer, accountant, real_estate, hairdresser, gym, ...), each mapped to the right OSM tags.
- `osmTags`: any raw OSM tag filter - `shop=bicycle`, `craft` (any craft), `cuisine~pizza`, `office!=government`.
- `areas` / `boundingBoxes` (`south,west,north,east`) / `centerPoint` + `radiusMeters`.
- `requireName` (default on), `requirePhoneOrWebsite`, `enrichWebsite`, `includeAllTags`, `maxItems`.
- Advanced: `overpassTimeoutSecs` (default 60) and `customOverpassUrl` (your own or a paid Overpass server, tried first).

```json
{
  "osmId": 867281416,
  "websiteEmails": ["info@kottident.de"],
  "websiteSocialLinks": {"facebook": "https://www.facebook.com/kottident"},
  "websiteEnriched": true
}
```

The run summary (key-value store `OUTPUT`) shows places per area, phone/website/e-mail **fill rates**, which servers
answered and any failed areas.

### Pricing

| | This Actor | automation-lab/openstreetmap-poi-extractor | thequietstack/openstreetmap-extract | transparent_meteorite/local-business-leads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per place | **$0.0004** | $0.0008 | $0.002 | $0.0019 |
| Start fee | $0.00005 | $0.005 | - | - |
| Website e-mails | $0.001, only when something was found | - | - | $0.002 |

- `place` - $0.0004 per business saved.
- `website-enriched` - $0.001, only if the website returned at least one e-mail or social profile.
- Failed areas, error rows and filtered-out places are **free**. The run stops gracefully at your maximum charge.

Competitor prices as listed in the Apify Store on 2026-11-02.

### Honest limits: OpenStreetMap vs Google Maps

- **Coverage**: OSM is excellent for shops, restaurants, hotels and healthcare in Europe and big cities, thinner for
  home-based trades and in some countries.
- **Contact fill rates are lower than Google's.** Example run, dentists in Kadıköy: 82 places, 54% with a website,
  32% with a phone, 9% with an e-mail. Use `requirePhoneOrWebsite` to keep only contactable places and `enrichWebsite`
  to find more e-mails.
- No reviews, ratings or photos - OSM does not have them.
- The free public Overpass servers are run by volunteers and are sometimes slow or down. The Actor checks every server
  before querying, retries and falls back to other servers, and **does not charge for areas that fail**. Smaller areas
  (a district instead of a whole country) are faster and more reliable. For heavy or business-critical use, set
  `customOverpassUrl` to your own or a paid Overpass server.

### Licence: ODbL - please read

OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and available under the
[Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0](https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright). Commercial use is allowed, but:

- **Attribution is required.** Credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" wherever you use or show the data. Every row
  carries `licence` and `attribution` fields.
- **Share-alike.** If you publicly distribute a database derived from this data (for example, a lead list you resell),
  that database must also be offered under the ODbL. Using the data internally (calling the businesses, market
  analysis) does not trigger share-alike.
- Website-enriched fields (`websiteEmails`, `websiteSocialLinks`) come from the businesses' own public websites, not
  from OSM. You are responsible for using contact data lawfully (GDPR, CAN-SPAM, local marketing rules).

### Data sources and fair use

- Overpass servers used: overpass.private.coffee, maps.mail.ru (global), ovp.dresel.systems (Europe only), in that
  order. The main overpass-api.de server is **not** used - its robots.txt disallows `/api/`.
- Area names are geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim: one request per area name, at most 1 request per second,
  identifying User-Agent, per its usage policy.
- One Overpass query at a time, at least 1 s apart; heavy queries are split instead of retried blindly.

### FAQ

**Is this legal?** Yes. OpenStreetMap is open data and allows commercial use under the ODbL with attribution.
Unlike Google Maps scrapers, there are no terms of service against extraction.

**Why are some fields empty?** OSM volunteers did not tag them. Check `fillRates` in the run summary.

**How many results can I get?** Set `maxItems` to 0 for no limit. A city district usually returns in seconds; a whole
large city can take a few minutes on the free servers.

**My area failed - was I charged?** No. Failed areas appear as free error rows. Try again later, use a smaller area or a
custom Overpass server.

**Which categories are supported?** 53 friendly categories, plus any raw OSM tag via `osmTags`
(see [Map features](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_features)).

### Use with AI agents / Apify MCP

The Actor works as a tool for AI agents through the [Apify MCP server](https://mcp.apify.com): an agent can call
`gazidev/openstreetmap-business-leads` with `{"categories": ["plumber"], "areas": ["Leeds, UK"], "requirePhoneOrWebsite": true}`
and get structured JSON back. It also works with the Apify API, Make, Zapier, n8n and LangChain.

# Actor input Schema

## `categories` (type: `array`):

Friendly categories mapped to OpenStreetMap tags (e.g. *Dentist* = `amenity=dentist` or `healthcare=dentist`). Combine several, or use raw OSM tags below.

## `osmTags` (type: `array`):

Any OpenStreetMap tag filter: `key=value`, `key` (any value), `key!=value` or `key~regex`, e.g. `shop=bicycle`, `craft`, `cuisine~pizza`. Each entry is OR-ed with the categories. See wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_features.

## `areas` (type: `array`):

Place names resolved via OpenStreetMap Nominatim to their official boundary, e.g. `Kadıköy, Istanbul`, `Kreuzberg, Berlin`, `Austin, Texas`. Smaller areas are faster and more reliable on the free OSM servers.

## `boundingBoxes` (type: `array`):

`south,west,north,east` in decimal degrees, e.g. `52.50,13.38,52.53,13.42`.

## `centerPoint` (type: `string`):

`latitude,longitude`, e.g. `41.0082,28.9784`. Used with *Radius*.

## `radiusMeters` (type: `integer`):

Search radius around the center point.

## `requireName` (type: `boolean`):

Skip unnamed map objects (recommended for lead lists).

## `requirePhoneOrWebsite` (type: `boolean`):

Keep only places that have a phone, mobile or website tag in OSM. Filtered server-side - you pay only for what is saved.

## `enrichWebsite` (type: `boolean`):

Fetch each business's own homepage (and at most one contact page, robots.txt respected) and add e-mail addresses and social profile links found there. Charged as *website-enriched* only when something was found.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Maximum places to save (0 = no limit). Places with the most contact data (phone, website, e-mail) are saved first.

## `includeAllTags` (type: `boolean`):

Add a `tags` object with every OpenStreetMap tag of the place.

## `overpassTimeoutSecs` (type: `integer`):

Server-side timeout per query. Queries that time out are automatically split into smaller tiles.

## `customOverpassUrl` (type: `string`):

Your own or a paid Overpass instance (e.g. `https://overpass.nextgis.com/YOUR_KEY/api/interpreter`), tried first. Public overpass-api.de is not allowed (its robots.txt disallows /api/).
