## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Reddit Scraper - Posts, Comments, Subreddits & Search

Extract public Reddit data without logging in and without a Reddit API key. Give it subreddits, post URLs, user profiles or search terms and get clean, structured posts, full comment threads, subreddit stats and user profiles. Export to JSON, CSV or Excel, or plug it into AI agents, n8n, Make and Zapier.

### What it does

- **Posts**: title, author, subreddit, score, upvote ratio, comment count, created/edited date, self-text, external link, domain, flair, images (including galleries), video URL, NSFW/spoiler/stickied/locked flags.
- **Comments**: the full thread per post, one record per comment, with `depth`, `parentId`, `isTopLevel`, score, author, body, and whether the author is the original poster.
- **Subreddits**: subscribers, active users, description, creation date, icon and banner.
- **Users**: link karma, comment karma, total karma, account age, verified/mod/employee/premium flags, plus their submitted posts.
- **Search**: keyword search across all of Reddit or within one subreddit, sorted by relevance, hot, top, new or most comments, over any time range.
- **Filters**: post date limit, comment date limit, keyword filter, NSFW toggle, per-source caps and a total-items cap.

### Inputs

| Field | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| `startUrls` | array | Subreddit, post, user or search URLs. `/r/x/top` keeps its sort. `redd.it` short links work. |
| `subreddits` | array | Plain names such as `python` or `r/startups`. |
| `searches` | array | Search terms. |
| `searchSubreddit` | string | Restrict searches to one subreddit. |
| `sort` / `searchSort` / `time` | select | Listing sort, search sort, and time window. |
| `maxPostsPerSource` | int | Posts per subreddit, search or user. Default 25. |
| `includeComments` | bool | Scrape each post's comments. Default true. |
| `maxCommentsPerPost` / `commentDepth` / `commentSort` | int / int / select | Size and shape of the comment thread. |
| `includeCommunityInfo` / `includeUserInfo` | bool | Save one info record per subreddit or user. |
| `postDateLimit` / `commentDateLimit` | date | Skip older items. |
| `filterKeywords` | array | Keep only posts that mention at least one keyword. |
| `includeNSFW` | bool | Default false. |
| `maxItems` | int | Hard cap on total records, useful for controlling cost. 0 means no cap. |
| `proxyConfiguration` | proxy | **Residential proxy is strongly recommended.** Reddit blocks datacenter IPs. |

### Output

Every record has a `dataType` of `post`, `comment`, `community` or `user`. The **Posts** and **Comments** views in the dataset split them into separate tables.

```json
{
  "dataType": "post",
  "id": "1abc23d",
  "title": "What CRM are you using in 2026?",
  "author": "someone",
  "subreddit": "startups",
  "score": 412,
  "upvoteRatio": 0.96,
  "numComments": 187,
  "createdAt": "2026-10-01T14:22:05+00:00",
  "url": "https://www.reddit.com/r/startups/comments/1abc23d/...",
  "link": "https://www.reddit.com/r/startups/comments/1abc23d/...",
  "text": "…",
  "flair": "Question",
  "images": [],
  "isNSFW": false,
  "dataSource": "json"
}
```

```json
{
  "dataType": "comment",
  "id": "lx9k2a1",
  "postId": "1abc23d",
  "parentId": "1abc23d",
  "isTopLevel": true,
  "depth": 0,
  "author": "another_user",
  "body": "We switched to …",
  "score": 96,
  "createdAt": "2026-10-01T15:03:44+00:00",
  "isSubmitter": false
}
```

### Use cases

- Brand and competitor monitoring: what people say about your product
- Market research and pain-point discovery for startups and product teams
- Sentiment analysis and trend tracking
- Lead generation from "looking for a tool that…" threads
- Training data, RAG and AI-agent context from real discussions

### Notes

- Only public data is collected. No login or Reddit account is used.
- Records with `dataSource: "rss"` came from Reddit's RSS feed fallback, used when the JSON endpoint is temporarily blocked. These records have no score, upvote ratio or comment count, and their comments are flat (no depth).
- Reddit returns up to about 1,000 posts per listing and about 500 comments per post request. Very large threads may be partial.

# Actor input Schema

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

Reddit URLs to scrape: subreddits (reddit.com/r/python, /r/python/top), posts (reddit.com/r/x/comments/abc123/...), users (reddit.com/user/name) or search pages (reddit.com/search/?q=...).

## `subreddits` (type: `array`):

Subreddit names to scrape, e.g. 'python' or 'r/startups'. Uses the 'Subreddit sort' below.

## `searches` (type: `array`):

Keywords to search Reddit posts for, e.g. 'best CRM for startups'. Great for brand monitoring and market research.

## `searchSubreddit` (type: `string`):

Limit search terms to one subreddit, e.g. 'SaaS'. Leave empty to search all of Reddit.

## `sort` (type: `string`):

How to sort subreddit listings (ignored if the URL already contains a sort, e.g. /r/x/top).

## `searchSort` (type: `string`):

How to sort search results.

## `time` (type: `string`):

Time window for 'Top'/'Controversial' listings and for search.

## `maxPostsPerSource` (type: `integer`):

Cap on posts taken from each subreddit, search term or user.

## `includeComments` (type: `boolean`):

Also scrape the comment thread of every post (one record per comment, with depth and parent).

## `maxCommentsPerPost` (type: `integer`):

Cap on comments saved per post. 0 = as many as Reddit returns (up to ~500).

## `commentDepth` (type: `integer`):

How many levels of nested replies to include (1 = top-level comments only).

## `commentSort` (type: `string`):

Order of comments within each post.

## `includeCommunityInfo` (type: `boolean`):

For each subreddit, also save one record with subscribers, active users, description and icon.

## `includeUserInfo` (type: `boolean`):

For each user URL, also save one profile record with karma, account age and verification.

## `postDateLimit` (type: `string`):

Skip posts older than this date (YYYY-MM-DD). Works best with 'New' sort.

## `commentDateLimit` (type: `string`):

Skip comments older than this date (YYYY-MM-DD).

## `filterKeywords` (type: `array`):

Keep only posts whose title or text contains at least one of these words (case-insensitive).

## `includeNSFW` (type: `boolean`):

Include posts marked 18+.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Hard cap on total records saved across all sources (posts + comments + info). 0 = no cap. Use it to control cost.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

Number of posts fetched in parallel.

## `requestDelaySecs` (type: `integer`):

Minimum pause between requests to Reddit. Use 1-3 when running without a proxy (e.g. locally on a home connection) to stay under rate limits. 0 = no pause.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Reddit blocks datacenter IPs and rate-limits each IP. Residential proxy is strongly recommended.
