## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Tech Stack Detector: Website Technology & CMS Lookup

Find out **what any website is built with**, in bulk: **CMS, ecommerce platform, analytics, tag managers, ad pixels, JS frameworks, CDN/hosting, payments, live chat and email provider**. You get about 170 technologies, each with evidence and a confidence score. A cheap **BuiltWith / Wappalyzer alternative** for lead lists and AI agents.

💲 **$2 per 1,000 websites.** Sites that fail to load are free. Pay only for results. No subscription, and the Apify free plan's monthly credit covers small jobs.

**Also known as:** BuiltWith alternative, Wappalyzer alternative, website technology lookup, what CMS is this site using, Shopify store detector, WordPress detector, tech stack lookup, technographics, website profiler.

### Try it now (free-plan friendly)

1. Click **Start**. The prefilled input works as is. Detects the tech stacks of apify.com, shopify.com and wordpress.org in about 5 seconds.
2. Or paste this input into the JSON tab:

```json
{
  "urls": [
    "apify.com",
    "www.shopify.com",
    "wordpress.org"
  ]
}
```

**Example output** (one dataset item, shortened):

```json
{
  "url": "https://apify.com",
  "domain": "apify.com",
  "status": 200,
  "technologyCount": 13,
  "technologies": [
    {
      "name": "Next.js",
      "category": "JavaScript framework",
      "version": null,
      "confidence": 100,
      "evidence": [
        "html __NEXT_DATA__"
      ]
    },
    {
      "name": "Amazon CloudFront",
      "category": "CDN",
      "version": null,
      "confidence": 75,
      "evidence": [
        "header via: ... (CloudFront)"
      ]
    }
  ],
  "cms": null,
  "ecommerce": null,
  "emailHosting": "Google Workspace",
  "cdn": [
    "Amazon CloudFront"
  ],
  "analytics": [
    "Google Tag Manager"
  ]
}
```

Small runs cost cents, and you can set a **Max cost per run** so you're never charged more.

### Use with AI agents / Apify MCP

Give your agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, n8n AI Agent, LangChain, OpenAI Agents SDK) this tool through **Apify's MCP server**:

```text
https://mcp.apify.com?tools=gmyri/tech-stack-detector
```

- **Example prompt:** "What CMS and analytics does shopify.com use?"
- **Why agents like it:** the input has one required field and documented defaults and enums. The output has stable, flat field names, errors are returned as items with an `error` field and are never charged, and each run writes a summary to the `OUTPUT` record.
- Agents that use `search-actors` find it by searching for: BuiltWith alternative, Wappalyzer alternative.

### API, Python, n8n, Make, Zapier

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/gmyri~tech-stack-detector/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=$APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"urls":["apify.com","wordpress.org"]}'
```

- **Python:** `ApifyClient(token).actor("gmyri/tech-stack-detector").call(run_input={...})`
- **n8n / Make / Zapier:** use the Apify "Run Actor" action with `gmyri/tech-stack-detector`, then read the dataset items.

### Quick FAQ

- **How is this different from BuiltWith?** It checks the live site right now, gives evidence for every detection and costs $0.002 per site with no subscription. It does not have BuiltWith's historical database.
- **Can I find all Shopify stores in my list?** Yes. Filter the dataset on `ecommerce = Shopify` (or `cms = WordPress`, and so on).
- **Does it collect personal data?** No. It reads only technical signals: headers, scripts, cookies' names and DNS records.
- **What if I set a spending limit?** The Actor stops cleanly at your *Max cost per run* and you're never charged above it.

### Details

### What it detects

About 170 technologies in these categories, with **evidence** (the header, cookie, script or DNS record that matched) and a confidence score:

- **CMS & site builders:** WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, Ghost, HubSpot CMS, Framer, Contentful-powered sites…
- **Ecommerce & payments:** Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, PrestaShop, Stripe, PayPal, Klarna…
- **JavaScript frameworks:** React, Next.js, Vue, Nuxt, Angular, Svelte, Gatsby, Remix, Astro, jQuery, Alpine.js…
- **Servers, CDN, hosting & security:** Cloudflare, CloudFront, Fastly, Akamai, Vercel, Netlify, Nginx, Apache, LiteSpeed…
- **Analytics, tag managers & ad pixels:** Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight, TikTok Pixel, Hotjar, Plausible, Segment, Mixpanel…
- **Marketing, chat & consent:** HubSpot, Intercom, Drift, Zendesk, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, OneTrust, Cookiebot…
- **Email & DNS providers (from DNS):** Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho, SendGrid, Mailgun, Route 53, Cloudflare DNS…

### Typical uses

- **Lead generation:** find every Shopify or WooCommerce store in a list, or every company that uses HubSpot or Intercom.
- **Sales enrichment:** add CMS, ecommerce platform and email provider to your CRM accounts.
- **Competitor research and agency prospecting:** see which analytics, ad pixels and frameworks a site runs.
- **AI agents:** a cheap "what is this site built with?" tool for research agents.

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `urls` | Websites or domains (`example.com` or full URLs). |
| `checkDns` | Also look up MX/TXT/NS records for email and DNS providers (default on). |
| `timeoutSecs` | Per-site timeout (default 20). |
| `maxConcurrency` | Parallel sites (default 5). |

### Output

One item per website: `technologies` (name, category, version, confidence, evidence), `categories` (grouped), plus shortcut fields `cms`, `ecommerce`, `emailHosting`, `cdn`, `analytics`. Sites that can't be loaded return an `error` item and **are not charged**.

### Pricing

Pay per event: **$0.002 per website analyzed ($2 per 1,000)** plus Apify's standard $0.00005 Actor start. Failed sites are free.

### Notes and limits

- Detection uses the page's HTML, response headers, cookies and public DNS only. It does not log in or bypass bot protection, so sites behind a challenge page return less data.
- It detects technologies, not people. No personal data is collected.
- Only the homepage (or the URL you give) is analyzed. Add more URLs to cover more pages.
