## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## BIS Central Bank Rates & Effective Exchange Rates

Fetch official Bank for International Settlements (BIS) data on global central bank policy rates and Broad Real Effective Exchange Rate (EER) indices. One API call returns daily rates across 24+ central banks (Fed, ECB, BOJ, BoE, RBA, SNB, PBOC, and more) or monthly EER indices for 60+ economies — the official trade-weighted currency measures used by central banks and economists. Free, no API key required.

### What It Does

- **Policy Rates**: Daily official benchmark rates from 24+ central banks back to the 1990s
- **Effective Exchange Rates**: Monthly BIS Broad Real EER indices (2020=100) for 60+ economies — trade-weighted, inflation-adjusted currency strength measures
- Both datasets fetch concurrently via the official BIS SDMX REST API

  "area_name": "Federal Reserve (Fed Funds Target)",
  "country": "United States",
  "date": "2024-06-12",

}
```
### Sample Output — Effective Exchange Rate
  "base": "2020=100"
}
```

### Use Cases

**Global rate cycle monitoring** — Track divergence between Fed (hiking), ECB (holding), and BOJ (still easing) in one dataset. Rate differentials are the primary driver of carry trades.

**Carry trade analysis** — Pair central bank rate differentials with BIS EER trends to identify overvalued/undervalued currencies on a purchasing power basis.

**BOJ yield curve control monitoring** — Get daily BOJ policy rate history alongside USD/JPY EER to track the impact of BOJ policy shifts on the yen's real value.

**EM rate spread tracking** — Monitor EM central banks (BR, TR, IN, ID, TH, MY) vs DM rates for spread compression / widening signals.

**USD strength dashboard** — The BIS Broad Real EER for USD is the most authoritative measure of dollar strength, accounting for inflation differentials across 60+ trading partners.

**Currency research / backtesting** — Pull EER history back to the 1990s for long-term currency regime analysis.

### Pricing

- **$0.002 per series fetched** (PPE — Pay Per Event)
- Default run (policy rates + EER = 2 series) ≈ $0.004

### FAQ

**How is BIS EER different from DXY?**
The US Dollar Index (DXY) covers only 6 currencies with a fixed 1973 basket. The BIS Broad Real EER covers 60+ trading partners, is updated to reflect current trade weights, and is inflation-adjusted — making it far more accurate for measuring true purchasing power.

**How current is the data?**
Policy rates are updated on business days as central banks announce decisions. EER indices are published monthly, typically with a 2–3 week lag.

**Can I get nominal EER (not inflation-adjusted)?**
The actor currently fetches Real (inflation-adjusted) EER. Contact us or modify the `eerAreas` key parameter to use `M.N.B.{AREA}` for nominal EER.

**What if a central bank isn't in the list?**
The BIS covers most major central banks. Submit a feature request via Apify issues to add additional area codes.
