## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Mutual Fund Holdings Tracker (N-PORT)

**Mutual Fund Holdings Tracker** extracts **quarterly fund holdings from SEC EDGAR N-PORT-P filings** — giving you a complete view of what any SEC-registered mutual fund owns. This covers Vanguard, Fidelity, BlackRock, T. Rowe Price, and 15,000+ other registered investment funds, updated with each quarterly filing.

Unlike 13F filings (which only cover hedge funds with >$100M AUM), **N-PORT covers every SEC-registered mutual fund** — including index funds, actively managed funds, and fixed income funds. This is the authoritative source for what institutional money is actually holding.

***

### Why use Mutual Fund Holdings Tracker?

1. **Institutional ownership analysis** — See which mutual funds own a stock and at what weight. A stock widely held by index funds has built-in buying pressure (and selling risk on rebalancing).
2. **Fund drift detection** — Track whether an "active" fund has drifted toward closet indexing. Compare quarterly holdings changes to identify drift from the fund's stated mandate.
3. **Smart money position tracking** — Follow star portfolio managers (Contrafund's Will Danoff, Dodge & Cox) by watching their quarterly N-PORT filings for new positions and trims.
4. **ETF holdings vs benchmark** — For ETFs that file N-PORT, compare actual holdings to stated benchmark to detect tracking error or deviation.
5. **Fixed income fund monitoring** — N-PORT covers bond funds, unlike 13F. Track which mutual funds are buying/selling specific corporate bonds, MBS, or government securities.

### How to use

1. Open the actor on Apify Store and click **Try for free**.
2. Set `fundNames` to search for specific funds by name, or use `searchQuery` for a broader search.
3. Set `maxHoldings` to limit how many holdings per fund to return (use `0` for all holdings).
4. Click **Start**. Each result is a fund filing with a nested `holdings[]` array.

| Feature | N-PORT (this actor) | 13F |
|---------|---------------------|-----|
| Covers mutual funds | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Covers hedge funds | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Covers ETFs | ✅ Yes (many) | Partial |
| Bond holdings | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Filing frequency | Monthly (large) / Quarterly | Quarterly |
| Publicly accessible | ✅ Yes (all N-PORT-P) | ✅ Yes |
| Filing delay | 60 days after period end | 45 days after quarter end |

### Cost estimation

**Pay-Per-Event: $0.005 per actor start + $0.05 per fund filing returned.**

The $0.05/filing reflects XML parsing of large N-PORT documents (some funds have 5,000+ holdings).

| Use case | Filings | Estimated cost |
|----------|---------|----------------|
| 3 Vanguard index funds | 3 | ~$0.15/run |
| 10 active growth funds | 10 | ~$0.50/run |
| Sector sweep (20 funds) | 20 | ~$1.00/run |
| Quarterly update (100 funds) | 100 | ~$5.00/run |

### FAQ

**How current is the data?**
N-PORT-P filings are required within 60 days after the period end. So Q2 (June 30) data appears by late August. Large advisors file monthly for the most recent month.

**Does it cover international funds or just US?**
N-PORT covers SEC-registered investment companies only. Foreign funds domiciled outside the US don't file N-PORT.

**Can I track changes in holdings quarter-over-quarter?**
Run the actor for two consecutive quarters with the same fund and diff the holdings arrays. The actor does not automatically compute position changes, but the raw data supports this.

**Why don't all holdings have tickers?**
N-PORT includes bonds, derivatives, and international securities that don't have tickers. ISIN/CUSIP are more reliable identifiers for fixed income holdings.
